News & UpdatesWe are in need of families to help host students who will be attending NDA for the 2018-2019 school year. NDA is now home to several international students. Some stay for one year to have a cultural exchange and some would like to graduate from NDA.

There are many benefits to hosting an international student. It brings a global perspective to your home. It encourages an international opportunity to learn more about another culture while sharing your culture with that student. It offers an opportunity to learn another language while teaching them about American language and meanings. More importantly, it is sharing your home with a young adult who is away from their parents and is looking for a supportive caring atmosphere to experience an academic, social and cultural experience.

General guidelines:• We only host students one year at a time. There is

no obligation past that one year for those students who are looking to stay until they graduate. However, if both parties should agree that they wish to continue a second year that can be a possibility but not an expectation.

• Can be single or married• Can share a room with another student• Just needs a bed, somewhere to put their clothes

and a study area• Needs to be loved and guided just like your own kids

We will have several students from other countries that will need homes for next year. Their profiles ready within the next few weeks.

We presently have a profile for a young lady from Taiwan, a girl scout who will be a sophomore, who is used to a younger sister who she helps with her homework. She has earned a scholarship to come and study in the US.

Please call now if you are interested or would just like to learn more with no obligations. Ms. Angie Joseph, 419-475-9359 ext 1253 or email [email protected]

NDA IS LOOKING FOR HOST FAMILIES

Mardi Gras is Tuesday, February 13th. This is an annual charity fundraiser which the entire school community attends, hosted and organized by the Sophomore Class. It is a fun event for the school while doing good for others!

Half of the profits from Mardi Gras go to the Sisters of Notre Dame Mission in Papua, New Guinea, while the other half is donated to a charity chosen by the Sophomore Class. This year, the Sophomores have chosen the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Northern Ohio Chapter.

How can you help?• Consider making a donation of a gift card or any gift

item that we can combine with others to make a basket for the raffle. (This can be dropped off in the main office.)

• Volunteer to help sell tickets or wrap raffle baskets this week. (Contact Mrs. Ana Kraus at [email protected])

• Volunteer to help set up, serve, or clean up on Feb 13th (Contact Mrs. Ana Kraus at [email protected] )

• Make sure your daughter buys plenty of tickets to buy lunch, enter the raffle, and participate in activities. Remember that we are supporting two charities with the profits.

Please contact Mrs. Joan Funk at [email protected] or Mrs. Karri Adler [email protected] with any questions or suggestions. Thank you for your support of this very worthwhile event.

MARDI GRAS 2018

well as the week before.

February 23rd: 7th / 8th Grade Dance, 7-9 p.m.• Help is needed providing supervision for the event.

Coming up next month is a very special event for all Notre Dame Academy students and their mothers (or special women in their lives). Parents of SeniorsFebruary 27th is a day for seniors to go on a college visit, finish applications, work on scholarships, and work on the FAFSA. Seniors will not be reporting to school that day. Encourage your daughter to use her time wisely! Be sure to have your daughter bring us her acceptance letters and scholarship awards (we will make a copy and return it). This is the only way we are able to keep track of all of the good news as the colleges rarely alert us of their decisions. We thank you in advance! Be sure to complete your FAFSA (and CSS Profile if necessary). If you need assistance completing these forms, I am happy to help. www.fafsa.ed.gov. I am in the process of sending out mid-year transcripts. Encourage your daughter to turn in her blue Mid-Year Request form so I know where she wants her transcripts sent. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Adrian Meier at [email protected].

Parents of JuniorsYour daughter will be taking the ACT on February 27th (during the school day). I encourage her to download an app on ACT Prep, go to a test prep website, or borrow a prep book from the library. Let’s make sure she is prepared for this important test! Some colleges require their applicants to take the SAT Subject tests. This is separate from the SAT/ACT. Check with the schools your daughter is interested in to see if this is necessary I have begun meeting individually with your daughters to discuss the college search and application process. If you would like to schedule a parent meeting, please contact Mrs. Adrian Meier at [email protected].

All parentsIt’s never too early to start planning college visits. Do you have spring break plans? Check and see if there are any campuses nearby for you to see! If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Adrian Meier at [email protected]

Any Freshmen or Sophomore interested in IB should take time to meet with Ms. Joseph to help determine how IB can fit in their schedules and be a fit for their goals. Parents are encouraged to meet as well with Ms. Joseph or call if they have questions or need assistance while helping their child find the right IB courses.

IB is self selecting and anyone is open to take the courses. However, all students must meet with Ms. Joseph before signing up for an IB class and get an IB registration form that must be signed and turned into Ms. Joseph directly.

Learn about the benefits of IB, the process and how our graduates have used it once they have gone to college and beyond. Contact Ms. Angie Joseph for more details [email protected].

Power of the Pen, now PenOhio: It is not too late to join if you have not yet! While we were saddened by the news that Power of the Pen would not be happening this year, Ms. Napoli is pleased to announce that Notre Dame Junior Academy has just joined a new competitive writing program! This program is called PenOhio, and closely resembles the values and goals of Power of the Pen.

Attached are two documents. The first is the initial welcome letter that was distributed last semester, but with the new PenOhio information in it. The second is the local tournament information sheet. This document needs to be filled out and signed by parents if your daughter is interested.

Additionally, there are directions for parents who are interested in chaperoning or judging during the tournament. I need this form completed and turned in to me either electronically or by your daughter by March 6, 2018. Even if you cannot chaperone or judge on the day of the tournament, I will need that form so that I know which students can attend.

In March and April, Ms. Napoli would like to meet with the team for an hour after school. Keep yours eyes peeled for an email with the dates of these meetings. If students have another commitment at the same time, do not worry, she is understanding!

Hello NDJA Parents!  My name is Marisa Napoli (your children know me as Ms. Napoli), and I am the PenOhio team coach this year. PenOhio is a program that challenges junior high and high school students to express themselves through writing. The instructional alignments for PenOhio, and therefore for the ladies on the PenOhio team, are as follows:

1. Anchored in Ohio’s Extended Writing and Reading Standards so as to build on writing skills that will prepare students for the next year of school

2. Brings “production and distribution of writing” to life through socially-engaging experiences

3. Student-centered inquiry is consistent with STEM curricula 4. Helps students build skills in narrative and creative writing so as to also

emphasize skills needed for expository and persuasive writing 5. Praise focus: Holistic Evaluation Model

If you are receiving this letter, that means your daughter has expressed interest in being on the PenOhio team for the 2017-2018 school year. Not only would she be witness to the objectives above, but she will also learn to be accountable.   Team members will be required to attend bi-weekly meetings at the start of the season, and weekly meetings as the tournament date(s) grow closer. These meetings will be held during lunch on Tuesdays. (Please note: Your daughter can only attend these meetings if she brings a bagged lunch with her.) During the month prior to the first tournament date, there will be 2-3 meetings held after school. If the young ladies do not tell me that they will be missing a meeting or a tournament, the “three strike rule” will apply. After the third strike, we will need to set up a conversation as to whether or not she can remain on the team.  I am excited to help your daughters grow in their writing in beautiful ways!  God bless,   Ms. Marisa Napoli
