Merci d’avance !
School year 2015-‐2016
Class: Grande Section Nathalie Lignon
My name is Nathalie Lignon, I have been in this school for 9 years, and before that I taught in kindergarten and elementary at a private school in Vauvert.
Organization of the day:
-‐ We greet the children in the classroom; we start with the rituals (the roll call, date, songs...). Then the children go to the bathroom and THEN they have a small snack (eg. Pompote, a liquid yogurt drink... just something light because we go to the canteen at 11.30). Those who have nothing or eat quickly can do a little drawing.
We then move on to the lesson and hands-‐on Maths workshops, the class is divided into three small groups, then it's play time. We go back to class and we do the exercises that correspond to the Maths lesson in the WORKBOOK. We play a little bit and it's already time to go to the canteen.
Early in the afternoon, we take the book “Taoki”, after a period of language work, we study the new sound, and then read the syllables at the top of the page, the rest of the page will be read the next year in CP.
We then work on the white slate board for revisions in writing and learning letters.
We go to the workshops in small groups, and follow on with Maths activities, writing and reading exercises (auditory and visual discrimination, that is to say, we will hear and recognize the letters studied, or do some label manipulations). Then we work on the project, or read a story and then the children go out to recess. The sports teacher will pick up the children on Mondays at 12.45-‐1.30 p.m.
On Thursday it's the same organization, but there will be no sports lesson. We will therefore start learning French at 12.45 p.m. that day.
Work Methods:
-‐During September I set a certain atmosphere in the classroom and encourage good work habits, so, at the beginning I'm very demanding on some points in the class. Safety rules, work and social interaction are established with the children, so that they are understood and accepted by all. Once good habits are installed, I become less demanding and become closer to them, my goal is for both personal as well as intellectual development. When I'm in a small group lesson, the other group is with the kindergarten assistant playing or revising, and one group is working independently on a worksheet.
Reading:
-‐The “Maisonny Bore”l method is a method that allows me to work in depth on the sounds made with the “Taoki” method. The signs used help the children to find reading more entertaining and engaging.
Mathematics:
We will follow the workbook.
In GS many steps are required to obtain a mathematical reasoning. We play many times with different games in order to attain the skills provided in the guidelines by the Ministry of Education. Only then do we start to use the worksheets using the concept studied.
What we will do in GS includes:
-‐ Simple and more complex algorithms, tables, double figures.
-‐The basic geometric shapes and simple volumes.
-‐ Counting up to 16 and up to 31 with a rhyme.
Little by little the work becomes increasingly abstract.
Writing and hand writing:
The different graphics are purely revisions, they are part of learning to write. I ask for them to be smaller and smaller and then combined in order to achieve handwriting that is increasingly precise and controlled.
Writing in cursive ("attached letters") takes up much time at this level since we are preparing for CP. We learn first of all on our white slate, then the children gain confidence and we work on paper.
We will end the year doing syllable dictations.
*If a child is absent, it is best to inquire for any homework to "catch up" the sound he or she has not had the opportunity to learn along with his or her comrades.
*There will be a small lotto revision before the holidays to help children memorize the sounds and words studied in our books.
The role of the kindergarten assistant:
After explaining a concept and having worked together on it, I send the students off in a group with her at their tables while I teach the other group. Her role is to remind the students of the lesson, to "wake up" if they are day-‐dreaming, and monitor their progress. During the reading she checks syllables already studied with the children. If she realizes that a child is struggling in any one area, she sends the child back to me.
She takes care of changing clothes in the case of an "accident", treats minor injuries, and files the work in the notebooks.
You will get the notebooks and workbooks regularly. Feel free to praise your children when they have a smile or a very good (tb) as this encourages them to apply themselves and make efforts.
Students must learn to whisper so that everyone can work in good conditions. You can help them practice this ... Thanks in advance!
P.S. They will have sport with the sports teacher on Mondays at 12.45pm. On Thursdays they will begin their afternoon activities with me at 12.45pm.

Classe : Grande Section Enseignante : Susan Little

Meet the Teacher Night 2015 -‐ 2016
This year, the Grande Section Maternelle will be studying the theme “Farm Animals” We are going to be focusing on the many types of animals that you would find on a farm. We will be studying exactly where on the farm these animals live, what they are called, what they eat, and how they benefit our lives. The new English program called “Backpack Level 1”, will allow the students to acquire a foundation of the English language. Through different common everyday life situations, the child will be stimulated to become at ease with the English language. At the end of each chapter, there will be a small book, which will cover all the new acquisitions. I highly recommend reading this book together with your child at home; this will allow you to follow their progressions as well as giving encouragement to your child. The new “Letterland” program is to allow the children to be acquainted to the different simple and complexed sounds of the English alphabet. Each week we will be studying new sounds by creating a list of vocabulary words. This whole program will permit the children to enlarge their vocabulary and to build a solid base of the English phonetics. During the third trimester, we will be following a pre- reading kindergarten program. This program will allow the children to use their English phonetics skills to start to read simple stories.
Every morning, the children will be asked to leave their backpacks on the fence of the kindergarten playground. They can play in the primary court yard until 8:45 until the bell rings Then they must line up and we will take them into the class room. No children will be accepted in the classroom before 8:45 and the parents are asked to stay behind the kindergarten fence.
Sport will be Tuesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 and Tennis will be on Friday morning
from 10:30 to 11:30. Please dress your children properly with running shoes and jogging pants. In September, May and June we ask for each child to wear a hat and to have a bottle of water with their name marked on it.
I will be teaching some mathematical skills to complete the new math program that concerns the child situating in their environment. Usually the children will be introduced to the new notions by playing educational games and then they will fully develop their understanding through a worksheet. In the afternoon, the children will become little artists. They will create their own “oeuvre art” using different techniques and materials, all which will be connected to the theme of the week.
When the children are not being artists, they will discover different subjects that will open them up towards the world. They will be scientists, by using their five senses and their hands to realize our scientific projects. They will use the calendar and clocks to understand the different aspects of time. Lastly, they will explore maps. In all the various programs the children will be singing songs. The songs and poems will develop their ear to hear the different intonations of the English language, they will develop their mouths to acquire a correct pronunciation of the different sounds and they will also develop their memory. All the songs and poems will all be connected as well to the theme of the week.
A Few Reminders:
• I would like to remind the parents to be on time in the morning so the class will not be disrupted when doing the Rituals of the class each morning at 8:45.
• There should be two snacks kept in your child’s backpack for each day, in the
morning just a fruit juice, fruit or apple sauce and in the afternoon something more heavy.
• At each vacation the children will bring home their books to be looked at by the
parents. Please take a few minutes to consult your children’s work, this will encourage them to continue to progress.
• Please, don’t forget to bring back all their books, on the first day back after each
vacation.
• Please, do not forget to check the Internet on the computer or your child’s backpack each night for any messages. I will be asking you to bring in certain things from home to realize our art or science projects and there will be some forms to fill out for our outings.
• Please, dress your children appropriately for class. Don’t forget your children will
be doing tennis, painting and playing with each other in the courtyard at recess. So please, keep in mind all the different activities they may be doing, when dressing them.
• The children should not wear any jewelry at school.
• Birthdays may be celebrated at school. We do ask you to bring in a cake that
does not need to go in the refrigerator, drinks and plastic glasses. Please contact Nathalie or myself to choose a date so we can make arrangements for that day.
For any problems in English, you may fix a meeting with myself in the morning before 8:30.
Please notify me a couple days ahead of time, so I can arrange my personal schedule. This year we will be creating a Kindergarten Souvenir Book and a Mascot. Please read
the following instructions to understand how the Souvenir book and Mascot will work .
My Kindergarten Souvenir Book
This is your child’s kindergarten souvenir book. It will be brought home every vacation. Thank you not to forget to bring it back to school on the first Monday morning after vacation! In this book we will put songs, photos and reports of our activities, all of which concern their life at school. It will encourage your child to tell you more about what they do at school and for each child it will be a book full of memories of this school’s year. In order for this book to be a success, we need you to participate with us when the book is at home. You need to take time with your child to look at its contents and to add details of your child’s life at home and even while they are on vacation, so there can be a real exchange between school and home. This book belongs to your child, they can stick different objects (letters, postcards, photos….) and all sorts of treasures in the book. The only rule to be respected is to follow the book page by page and to be conscience of the fact that it is neither a doodle book nor a coloring book. Who can write in the book? Everyone can write in the book and leave a message about something your child wants to tell: daddy, mummy, brother(s), sister(s), and grandparents…. What can be put in the book? The children can put almost anything in this book : paper, leaves, flowers, feathers, fabrics….. anything that inspires them. What kind of writing may be used? It’s doesn’t matter, each person may write as they wish (print, capital letters, script, type by computer). The importance is to leave a trace of what your child has done during their school year. Thank you for your precious help and we wish all our students a wonderful year in Kindergarten! The kindergarten teachers.
Our Mascotte : Spot the Dog
This year, we will be having fun with Spot the Dog! He’s a little dog who loves to travel with children and to discover the life on the farm. He will be with us all year round and will join in on all our activities. Throughout the different seasons and times he will enable us to live wonderful adventures and encounter lots of farm animals!
Every weekend Spot will sleep over at a child’s home. It is always a very big event to be able to spend special moments with Mousy at their home! For each child these moments will leave wonderful memories. It will be a great opportunity to take photos, make comments, drawings…and add them to your child’s souvenir book. Furthermore, Spot’s adventures outside of school will always be followed with great attention and enthusiasm on our behalf. It is very important that we have the child’s experiences with Spot written down in their books as it is very useful for our language time in class. To enable this experience to go well and in order for each child to take Spot home, we shall set up a timetable. Some will have their turn at the beginning of the year, others at the end of the year. Children will enjoy having Spot at their home. We count on you to take good care of Spot during her stay at your home with you….but DO NOT FORGET TO BRING SPOT BACK TO SCHOOL!!!! We thank you in advance for your help and collaboration. The Kindergarten Teachers
Lastly, I wish all the children and parents a great year and if there are any questions,
please do not hesitate to ask. Susan LITTLE
