Au cœur de Bordeaux, la caserne de la Benauge se situe à l’articulation entre la ville historique, le quartier populaire de la Bastide et les secteurs en devenir des anciennes friches industrielles portuaires (ZAC Niel, Braza et Garonne-Eiffel).La centralité de la caserne est renforcée par un maillage de transports publics dense et multimo-dal (tramway, nombreuses lignes de bus, navette fluviale, proximité de la gare Saint-Jean) ainsi que par le réseau de continuités douces. Le site s’ouvre ainsi à une fréquentation à l’échelle de l’agglomération.

Face à la scénographie monumentale des quais de la ville classique, la caserne s’affirme comme une des rares émergences dans la skyline hori-zontale du grand paysage fluvial bordelais. Balise moderniste en proue d’un territoire en mutation, la caserne constitue désormais une composante historicisée et identitaire du pay-sage des quais. Grâce à sa position privilégiée et à son gabarit, elle assure la liaison visuelle entre le centre-ville et l’horizon des coteaux.

Facing the monumental scenography of the classical town quay, the fire station asserts it-self as one of the scattered emergence in the horizontal skyline of the large fluvial overview of Bordeaux.As a modernist marker at the bow of a territory in mutation, the fire station forms henceforth a historicized and identity element of the quays scenery. Through its privileged position and its size, it ensure a visual connection between the city centre and the hills horizon.

PATRIMONIAL APPROACHAuthenticity issues:-Preservation of substance with minimalist res-toration-Respect of facades’ and volumes’ composition, of articulation between clear spaces, construc-tion and distribution principles;-Readability and reversibility of interventions;Aesthetic and symbolic issues:-Iconic characteristic of functionalist architec-ture highlighted-Reinforcement of urban coherence in the quarter by the arrangement of a market square connecting the banks and the neighbourhood through the public courtyard;Functional issues:-Program compatibility between buildings’ ad-vantages and weaknesses;-Interventions recalling the firemen universe and the genius loci (moving furniture, physical training, misting systems, etc.)

At the heart of Bordeaux, the Benauge fire station is situated at the articulation of the historical town, the Bastide working-class area and the budding old port brownfields areas (Niel, Braza and Garonne-Eiffel).The fire station centrality is strengthened by a dense and multimodal network of public transport (tramway, many bus lines, river bus, proximity of Saint-Jean railway station), as well as the soft continuity network. Thus, the site opens up to a frequentation at the urban area scale.

The Grandes Manœuvres association coordinates all stakeholders (public, private, inhabitants) and leads every step of the process, from funding to implementation. In the pioneer phase, public space appropriation through field-based produced urban furnitures reveals the site potential and its community vocation. As the firemen keep working, the mobile tower takes the rooftop by storm and opens a new view over the city.
