All of today’s readings focus on the centrality of the
Resurrection. The prophet Ezekiel looks forward to a future
when God will send his spirit upon those who have died and
“open your graves and have you rise from them.”
In his Letter to the Romans, Paul teaches that the
present life of Christians is led through the indwelling of “the
Spirit of God.” This same Spirit who raised Jesus from the
dead will also raise their mortal bodies to life in the
resurrection of the dead.
The reading from the Gospel of John tells the account
of the raising of Jesus’ friend Lazarus. This event signifies
Jesus’ power over death and foreshadows his own
Resurrection. Martha’s dialogue with Jesus is remarkable.
She greets Jesus’ arrival with frustration, saying: “Lord, if you
had been here, my brother would not have died.”
When Jesus tells her that her brother will rise, Martha
shows her knowledge that the dead will rise on the last day.
Jesus deepens Martha’s faith by declaring:”I am the
resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he
dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will
never die.” When Jesus asks Martha if she believes this, she
responds, not with a statement of fact, but with the insight of
faith: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of
God.” No other person in the entire Gospels has made such a
deep confession of true faith in the person of Jesus. Martha
exemplifies what Jesus wants from each of us: a confession
that moves beyond intellectual knowledge to a personal
commitment to and relationship with him.

March 29, 2020
Fifth Sunday of Lent
Couples celebrating their 50
th Wedding Anniversary
anytime during 2020 are invited to attend the Golden
Wedding Jubilee Mass with Cardinal Dolan at Saint Patrick’s
Cathedral on Sunday, June 7 at 2:30 p.m. Pre-registration is
required. Please call the Rectory at 914-668-9815 to register.
With the cancellation of Masses we have experienced a
decline in the donation of food which we regularly deliver to
the St. Mary’s Food Pantry. During this difficult time, there
is a greater need for canned and packaged goods. If you are
able, please bring food items to the Church and place them in
the basket in the vestibule.
The 2020 Appeal has begun and our theme for this year is
Teach – Serve – Sanctify, a theme intended to focus our
hearts and minds on the fundamental mission of the Church.
Our Parish goal for the year is $56,000. To date, we have
received $19,785 in pledges from 63 donors. Please be as
generous as you have always been so we can not only meet
our goal but surpass it.
We have been informed by the Archdiocese that Holy
Week and Easter Sunday services will be celebrated in
private by the priests with no parishioners present. We will
keep you informed as to where and how to livestream
service.
The Archdiocese has directed that Funeral Masses or
services in the Church or funeral home will no longer be
conducted until further notice. Families are to be assured that
a Memorial Mass will be offered as soon as possible after
current assembly restrictions have been lifted.
Please check on your neighbors and our older parishioners
and see if they are in need of any assistance. We have
parishioners who are willing to help pick up groceries,
medication and lend a helping hand. Use the Contact Us
section on our website or call the Rectory to let us know.
Prayer to the Virgin Mary for Protection
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope.
We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.
At the foot of the Cross you participated in Jesus’ pain,
with steadfast faith.
You, Our Lady of New York, know what we need.
We are certain that you will provide, so that,
as you did at Cana of Galilee,
joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.
Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the Father’s will
and to do what Jesus tells us:
He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us,
through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.
We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God.
Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger,
O glorious and blessed Virgin.
Prayer for Spiritual Communion
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I long for You
in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As
though You have already come, I embrace You and unite myself entirely to You; never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.
