    [Continued from theAugust 2018 issue]

    rdinary Perception – laukika (Outer

perception through sense contact withobjects): It is the direct knowledge whicharises from the contact of senses (indriyas)with the objects (padharthas). The knowledgethus, obtained, is generally indeterminateknowledge (nirvakalpa pratyaksha) which onegains at first instance by a casual look at anobject, as for example a table. Determinateknowledge (savikalpa ptatyaksha) on theother hand, is the one that is gained by havinga second look, to gain the full content ofknowledge, as for example other attributes oftable, such as its size, quality of wood used, itsstructure, colour etc. By this definitionnirvikalpa precedes savikalpa.2 ) E x t r a o r d i n a r y P e r c e p t i o n –alaukika/intuition (Inner perception gainedthrough mind Extra ordinary perception is theone, which one gets directly from mind, aboutnon objects. As for example people die, ice iscold intuition b) Inference(Anumana) Commonexperience in the dailylives of people may bed e s c r i b e d a sInference. Practicals u c c e s s i n l i f edepends upon theability of the individualto draw the correctinference. As for example, when we s e esmoke, we immediately draw the inferencethat it is coming from fire, somewhere. TheInference is that knowledge, which ispreceded by perception. All perceptibleknowledge is expressed in the form ofjudgment. It is described as reasoning for

Oanother.' It is intended to draw

    attention to the point under

    consideration. There are five

    constituents of inference: 1)

    proposition or statement

    (pratijna), 2) reason (hetu), 3)

    example (uddharna), 4)

    universal propositionor application (upanaya)

    and 5) conc lus ion (n igamana) . 1 .

    Proposition/statement is the declaration what

is to be established, as for example there is fire

in the forest. 2. The reason is the means for

establishing, what is to be established. 3.

Example is a familiar instance, which is known

to possess the property to be established, and

which implies that this property is invariably

contained in the reason given. Example forms

an important part of inference in nyaya logic. 4.

Application is the reaffirmation that the object

inferred is 'so' or 'not so' as proposed 5.

Conclusion is restating of the proposition after

reason has been established. A typical

example may be cites as follow: i. The far away

    mountain has f i re

    (proposition) ii. For it

    has smoke (reason)

    ii i . Whatever has

smoke it is due to fire.

    has e.g. a hearth in

    kitchen (example) iv.

    T h e f a r a w a y

    mountain has smoke,

    s u c h a s i s i n v a r i a b l y

accompanied with fire in the kitchen

(application) v. Therefore far away mountain

    has fire. (Conclusion) c) Comparison/Analogy

(Upāmana) It is the knowledge of an object,

gained through its similarity to another object,

previously well known. The similarity should

    Persecution of

    Kashmiri Hindus - II

One of the big tasks completed by Malik KajiChak and one of the major commands of AmirShams-ud-Din Muhammad Iraqi carried outby him was the massacre of infidels andpolytheists of this land. It happened like this:

During the government of Malik MusaRaina (1501-1510? AD) all the depravedheretics of this land had been converted toIslam. But with the help of some of the chiefsof this land, some of them had reverted to thecustoms of the infidels and polytheists. Theseapostates had resumed idolatory. Some of theinfidels related that during the hours ofoffering prayers and worshipping of idols, theywould place a copy of the holy Quran undertheir haunches to make a seat to sit upon. Thus idol worshipping proceeded even whilethey sat on the divine book. When the newsand details of these doing were brought toAmir Shans-ud-Din Muhammad Iraqi, hesummoned Malik Kaji Chak to him.Accompanied by Malik Ali and KhwajaAhmad , h i s two counse l l o r s andadministrators, Malik Kaji Chak presentedhimself before the venerable Amir Shams-ud-Din Iraqi, who declared to them, "Thiscommunity of idolators has, after embracingand submitting to the Islamic faith, now goneback to difiance and apostasy. If you findyourself unable to inflict punishment uponthem in accordance with the provisions ofSharia and take disciplinary action againstthem, it will become necessary and incumbentupon me to proceed on a self-imposed exileand in that case you shall not stand in my wayat the time of departure. Since Malik KajiChak, prior to his assumption of power andauthority had promised him that he wouldnever deviate from or disregard his wishes

    C.L.Gadoo

I am working on an e-bookin different

style and with different content. Iwant to express my gratitude tomy community members whoshared at a very crucial time thepain and anguish of ourdisplaced brethren who left the valley, touphold the Dharma and honour of ourwomenfolk. At that critical juncture, when hellwas let loose in the valley, we stood like a rocktogether. I was then President, KashmiriSamiti, Delhi, the focal point for our strugglefor survival. It was a unique experience to findextra ordinary spirit and zeal of our communitymembers to find them all out, in helping mood, when nobody even not the Government tookcognizance of our miseries. We condemnedthe genocide and ethnic cleansing of KashmiriHindus. To protest, we came out in thousandson roads and rest is the history!

Brilliant attempt and effort. It is very easy forpeople l ike me to makecomments here and there but ittakes a solid amount of grit, dedication, determination toil toproduce something like this. AndMr. Raina has shown all of thaton the ground, not in the air. Isincerely hope and pray the global KPcommunity will support this publication to keepit sustained. Unless supported, the publicationwill not sustain and we will have no one toblame except ourselves for that.

I do not qualify to comment on the qualityof the content and shall leave that to thereaders and the experts amongst us.On the layout and presentation, surely a greatjob done in absence of professional designhelp. Some minor points that come to mynovice mind are:

The Pages are text heavy. These days, theattention span of a PDF page is less thanseven seconds. Thus the content should beconverted to easy to understand graphics thanlengthy text.

The colour combination looks a bit too loudat places and could be more subtle.

But I think that in spite ofbeing a community of great thinkers, we havenot done anything constructive for thebetterment of our community. I am not anatheist but I think instead of limiting ourselvesto celebrating Hawans and other suchcelebrations, why nobody in our communitydid ever think of coming together to establisheducational institutions wherein our childrencan get quality education as well as jobs. If youwill see most of the communities likeCatholics, Parsis, Jains have their owncolleges. Raising funds would be difficult butnot impossible.......

Other than that, I feel since we are spreadin different cities of the country, (we) shouldfight for domicile exemption so that ourchildren can opt for courses other thanEngineering.

More importantly, I wouldlike a description of what happened to thehouses after we were forced into exodus. Weknow, by the end of 1990 alone around 2500houses were gutted, mostly belonging to ourcommunity. Others were illegally occupied, vandalized, looted, or bought for a song.
