March / Marzo 4, 2018 Third Sunday of Lent | Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma

Dear Friends in Christ,

I pray that you are having a very blessed Lenten

Season! Indeed, it is going by faster than expected

and we are already seeing the first signs of spring

with the days being longer, almost 12 hours long

now, and some flowers starting to bloom. Oh and, of course, no

more snow!!! And as nature draws closer to spring so does the

church draws closer and closer to Easter, which will take place

one month from today. For the next three Sundays we will be

hearing during Mass from the Gospel of John three dramatic

stories of faith response: Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the

well (third Sunday), Jesus and the healing of the man born blind

(fourth Sunday), and Jesus raising Lazarus from the death (fifth

Sunday). As you hear these three powerful stories during the

next three Sundays place yourself in them as the main character

(the woman, the man born blind and Lazarus) and see yourself

being transformed and made anew by Jesus. Along with this,

continue your Lenten season by, very intentionally, praying each

day. As a community we have the opportunity to pray each day

the Holy Mass, pray the stations of the cross each Friday and

learn about your own baptism each Wednesday night. Along

with praying, continue to be people of mercy by the way you

give out of your poverty or your wealth to those who have less.

Here in your church we do that as a community each Wednesday

and Saturday through St. Vincent de Paul, and the third Saturday

of each month serving breakfast to the labor- workers in down-

town Portland. One more thing, don’t forget to pencil in your

busy schedule Holy Week to come and celebrated the passion,

death and resurrection of Jesus (March 29, 30, 31). A schedule

will be available soon with all the sacred liturgy celebrations for

Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. All of this as

we approach the holy time of our Salvation, Easter!

Queridos Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Oro por que ustedes estén teniendo un tiempo santo durante esta

Cuaresma. ¡El tiempo está pasando muy rápido y ya vemos los

primeros días de la primavera con los días cada vez más largos,

las flores embelleciendo nuestros jardines y por supuesto no más

nieve! Así como la primavera se acerca también el tiempo Santo

de Pascua se acerca cada día más; ¡en un mes será Pascua! Por

los próximos tres domingos la liturgia nos estará presentando

con tres dramáticas historias de fe a través del evangelio de San

Juan: Jesús y la samaritana en el pozo (este domingo), Jesús y el

ciego de nacimiento (el próximo domingo), y Jesús resucitando a

Lázaro (el ultimo domingo de Cuaresma). Al escuchar estas

historias póngase en los zapatos de estos tres personajes en

cada historia y, como ellos, déjese transformar y hacer una

nueva creatura en Jesús. Así mismo continúe su tiempo de

Cuaresma orando especialmente la Santa Misa que celebramos

en español todos los Domingos y martes y siendo gente de

misericordia sirviéndole a los demás. Aquí en su Iglesia lo

puede hacer a través de St. Vincent de Paul sirviéndole comida a

los necesitados o en el ministerio de la multiplicación de

alimentos. Finalmente, no se olvide de separar los días de la

Semana Santa que será el 29, 30 y 31 de marzo. El horario de

las celebraciones se les dará muy pronto y todo cristiano

católico está llamado a celebrar el jueves, viernes y Sábado

Santo. Todo esto nos prepara para la celebración del día santo

de Pascua.

Stations of the Cross

You are invited to participate in the Stations of the Cross

play which will be held on Good Friday. Anyone is welcome

to participate. We need all the help we can get. Practice

will be held each Sunday in March

in the church from 3 - 5 pm.

In today’s Gospel Jesus is asked “What sign

can you show us?” Every day we can see

signs of how God has visited us in the blessings of our

lives. Let us be a sign of God’s love by being a blessing

to others.

ministry and help decorate the church during Holy Week /

Retreat for Parents

On March 24 - 25, there will be a retreat for parents here in

the church. Raúl & Lourdes, the catechists for adults, will

be in the back of the church after the 12 mass with a sign-up

sheet.

Easter Lilies

To honor a loved one during Easter purchase a lily from

our church and the name of the person will be on the lily

during Easter. We are asking for a donation

of $12 per lily.
