Je l'engageais ensuite 4de<;qsegns crainte, devant moi, pour le charme de mes yeux et la fli- cit de tnon Ame. Elle rougissait sons le coup d'une motion candide qui fai- sait monter son sang son visage. D'elle jusqu'A moi s'levait un parfum d'amour qui imprgnait mon coeur d'un bonheur idyllique. En ces tte-A-tte que nous aimions prolonger, nous changions sans contrainte nos impres- sions les plus intimes. Elle-me racon- tait tout son pass d'entant, ses joies familiales avant la terrible catastrophe qui avait fait sa mre veuve et les avait amenes par la suite dans la contre. Je me couchai, ayant cet espoir au coeur, et j'essayai de dormir. Ce fut en vain. Chaque fois que, bris de fatigue, je m'assoupissais, un brusque sursaut mnie rveillait et mon cerveau tait res- saisi par le tourbillon de ses inquitu- des. A l'espoir de rconciliation dont je m'tais un instant berc, se substi- tuaient peu peu de mortelles angoisses. Rien ne paraissait moins certain que l'oubli. Assurment, si j'avais vcu seul avec ma femme, j'aurais pu plus aisment vaincre cette futile fcherie. A notre ge il n'tait point de rancune capable de rsister un baiser et une caresse d'amour. Malheureusement, la situation se prsentait autrement. Mme Duport m'avait tmoign jusqu'alors la plus vive des affections maternelles et s'tait applique consolider la trame' de notre bonheur matrimonial. Cette justice lui tant rendue, il me faut ajou- ter que c'est son attitude intransi- geante que je dus mes malheurs future. Il n'est point dans ma pense de lincri- 1 miner.
