Chaque année, la Journée mondiale de la philosophie est une occasion unique de rassembler la communauté philosophique internationale et de stimuler la réflexion sur les problématiques contemporaines.

Conformément aux dispositions de son Acte constitutif, l’UNESCO s’emploie à promouvoir la réflexion libre et le dialogue par ses actions dans le domaine de l’éducation, de la culture, des sciences et de la communication. Les défenses de la paix devant être élevées dans l’esprit des hommes, notre devoir est de travailler à fortifier cet esprit, par la pensée critique et la compréhension mutuelle.

En 2010, la Journée mondiale de la philosophie s’inscrit aussi dans le cadre de l’Année internationale du rapprochement des cultures et revêt de ce fait une acuité particulière. La philosophie est, en effet, une école de la diversité, par la richesse de ses courants, de toutes les époques et sur tous les continents.

La complexité des enjeux actuels nous invite à tirer parti de cette richesse pour élever notre capacité d’analyse du réel. L’intensification des échanges de toutes natures est riche en promesses de partage, mais porte aussi des risques de malentendus ou de tensions. Il nous faut collectivement redoubler d’effort pour assurer à tous une éducation de qualité et un environnement qui permette effectivement à chacun, homme ou femme, de faire valoir ses idées et d’enrichir la discussion publique, pour la justice et la paix.

Les organisations internationales et en premier lieu l’UNESCO, ont un rôle majeur à jouer en ce sens, avec le soutien de tous les acteurs de la vie académique, scientifique et culturelle, avec la participation des universités, des médias, de la société civile et des gouvernements. La philosophie est une exigence de notre temps, et son affermissement un axe majeur de mon engagement pour un nouvel humanisme.

À l’occasion de cette Journée mondiale de la philosophie, l’UNESCO réunit philo-sophes, citoyens éclairés ou simples curieux autour de tables rondes, conférences et colloques pour mieux comprendre les enjeux contemporains : comment concilier l’universalité des valeurs et la diversité des cultures ? Quel rôle la philosophie peut-elle jouer dans le rapprochement des peuples ? 80 manifestations internationales sont organisées dans le monde, avec le soutien de nos partenaires, Chaires UNESCO, Commissions nationales et réseaux d’experts comme le Réseau international des femmes philosophes, afin de diffuser le plus largement possible l’exercice du questionnement, qui est le commencement de la sagesse.

COLLOQUES

Alors que la question du « genre » est 

devenue incontournable dans un certain 

nombre de sociétés ou, plus exactement, il 

est « politiquement correct » de ne plus la 

passer sous silence, faire une place aux 

femmes-philosophes est exigible en droit 

comme minimum à respecter, même s’il demeure 

toujours difficile à faire respecter dans les 

faits. Au fond, le Réseau international des 

femmes philosophes n’est-il pas aujourd’hui 

« politiquement correct » ? N’est-ce pas déjà là 

une manière de le rendre moins dérangeant ?

C’est pourquoi nous voudrions aujourd’hui 

interroger cette notion même de 

« politiquement correct ». De fait, 

l’application de la notion de « politiquement 

correct » dans un domaine liant travail 

intellectuel et question du genre ne va pas 

de soi. En particulier, elle nous oblige à 

soulever la question des normes : les normes 

actuelles du travail intellectuel si bien 

(trop bien ?) intégrées et intériorisées par 

certaines d’entre nous n’empêchent-elles pas 

de voir ou de penser ?

Quelle est l’actualité de la pensée de 

Mohammed Iqbal ? Si l’œuvre du plus fameux 

poète et philosophe musulman du sous-

continent indien au XXe siècle nous est 

aujourd’hui particulièrement précieuse, c’est 

d’abord pour son humanisme d’une singularité 

peu commune. À travers la discussion 

permanente qu’il conduit entre la pensée 

islamique et la pensée occidentale, Iqbal 

nous parle de la dignité de l’homme en  

la situant à un tel degré de sublime, ou de 

sacralité, que c’est tout le sens de cette 

dignité qui trouve là un fondement et un 

avenir nouveaux. 

Quoi de plus nécessaire en ce début  

de XXIe siècle que de telles pensées, où se 

rencontrent et se fécondent les héritages  

de civilisations qui n’apparaissent plus 

alors concurrentes, mais liées par l’amitié 

du dialogue ?

COLLOQUES

Le projet de recherche « La civilisation en 

question », réalisé dans le cadre de l’Année 

internationale du rapprochement des cultures 

(2010), a pour but d’élaborer une réflexion 

scientifique sur la notion de « civilisation ». 

Ce concept, en effet, connaît un renouveau 

dans le langage médiatique et politique, 

en englobant de nombreux thèmes tels que la 

culture, la société, l’identité, la religion, 

la globalisation ou le progrès. Croisant des 

regards sur l’Antiquité classique, l’Inde, 

le Monde arabe, l’Afrique sub-saharienne et 

l’Amérique latine, ce travail de recherche 

permet une approche renouvelée de cette 

problématique et pointe les principaux 

enjeux intellectuels, culturels, idéologiques 

et politiques des usages de la notion de 

« civilisation ». 

Ces réflexions visent ainsi à apporter un 

savoir critique aux décideurs politiques 

et aux différents acteurs sociaux, pour 

leur permettre de mieux saisir les enjeux 

de cette notion, utilisée dans le cadre de 

diverses stratégies en faveur du dialogue 

interculturel.

COLLOQUES

La notion d’une humanité universelle est  

une acquisition récente de l’histoire : la 

façon dont elle est apparue, pour la première 

fois en Europe, à Athènes, met clairement 

en évidence la difficulté que l’esprit humain 

éprouve devant cette notion contestée par la 

rencontre avec la diversité culturelle. 

L’histoire des civilisations nous enseigne 

que cette contradiction se produisit 

répétitive ment comme si le dévoilement 

de l’universel impliquait à chaque fois 

son voilement. Il s’agit, aujourd’hui, de 

voir comment il est possible d’échapper au 

dualisme « universel/diversité » en parvenant 

à dire en quoi – avec l’aide de philosophes, 

de psychanalystes et d’artistes — le divers, 

le différent, l’autre peuvent être conçus 

comme procédant d’un universel plus complexe 

à penser que ceux qui nous furent légués par 

l’histoire.

Les rencontres sur les Nouvelles Pratiques 

Philosophiques constituent un lieu de 

rendez-vous et d’échange pour toutes les 

personnes qui s’intéressent à la pratique 

de la philosophie dans le but de la rendre 

accessible au plus grand nombre dans des 

lieux diversifiés : à l’école primaire, au 

secondaire, en hôpital, en prison, dans les 

cafés, universités populaires, médiathèques, 

au théâtre, au cinéma, au sein d’entreprises 

ou d’organisations, etc. 

Au cours de ces deux jours de rencontres, des 

démonstrations de pratiques philosophiques, 

des tables rondes, des ateliers de 

communications, des ateliers de recherche, 

des projections et des stands seront 

organisés.

COLLOQUES

Le colloque « La Raison et ses combats — 

Lumières, rationalisme moderne, révolution, 

hier et aujourd’hui » entend débattre sur 

la situation historique et théorique d’un 

combat qui n’a cessé de faire rage depuis 

la naissance de la philosophie des Lumières 

et, plus encore, depuis la Révolution 

française à nos jours ; un combat contre les 

irrationalismes, et, centralement aussi, 

un combat contre les courants (multiformes 

depuis 200 ans) qui veulent incriminer 

toute perspective et toute possibilité de 

transformation profonde de l’ordre dominant. 

Dans les années 2000, l’irrationalisme 

investit des champs diversifiés (de la 

politique, des sciences sociales et humaines, 

de l’économie, de la philosophie, des sciences 

de la nature, du psychisme). Cela selon des 

voies prenant les formes de la providence, 

de la création biblique, de la subjectivité 

vue ontologiquement, fondée et fondatrice du 

désordre ontologique ; mais aussi les formes 

insidieuses de la mathématisation d’objets 

non identifiés, de la modélisation d’intérêts 

idéologiques.

Né dans l’ancienne cité d’Otrar  

(sur le territoire de l’actuel Kazakhstan), 

Al-Fârâbî (872-950) a étudié les sciences et 

la musique à Bagdad ainsi que la philosophie 

à travers la translatio studiorum des Grecs vers le monde arabe.

Sa contribution à la pensée universelle 

sera examinée en soulignant la manière dont 

il a étudié, commenté et fait connaître 

les anciens philosophes, particulièrement 

Aristote, créant ainsi des passerelles entre 

les cultures et les mondes. Les analyses et 

débats menés par des spécialistes renommés  

mettront indubitablement en lumière les 

objectifs de l’Année internationale du  

rapprochement des cultures.

Cet outil pédagogique, diffusé sur supports imprimé et électronique, présente de manière simple et stimulante une vision interculturelle de l’histoire qui unit le monde arabo-musulman et le monde occidental. Un accent particulier est mis sur la nécessité de reconnaître les interactions intenses entre toutes les rives de la Méditerranée, sans oublier les affiliations qui les relient avec des cultures plus lointaines comme celles de l’Inde, de la Perse, de l’Arabie et de l’Afrique.

Exposition de photos sur les liens Occident et Orient

PAR LA FONDAtION MARtIN BODMER MIRó 1 ET 2

L’exposition, qui se tiendra du  15 au 25 novembre 2010 ainsi que la conférence-débat du 19 novembre  2010, visent à pallier à la méconnaissance de l’influence qu’ont exercée les cultures juive et musulmane sur le développement de l’Europe et à s’interroger sur la question de leurs racines communes.  Le public pourra admirer les trésors de la collection Martin Bodmer, l’une des plus importantes collections privées au monde de papyri, manuscrits et autres livres, située à Cologny, Genève.

La philosophie étant le désir de vérité  et de sagesse, la Journée mondiale de la philosophie consacrera un espace public au café philosophique, afin que le public puisse dialoguer avec des philosophes sur des thèmes d’intérêt. 

Trois sessions sont prévues comme suit :

15 h - 17 h Rôle des philosophes dans les sociétés en mutation animée par l’Association Rencontres et Débats Autrement, avec la participation de Geneviève Fraisse et Dany-Robert Dufour, philosophes

Ateliers de pratiques philosophiques avec les enfants

Dès les années 1990, l’UNESCO s’efforce d’attirer l’attention de la communauté éducative sur les nouvelles pratiques philosophiques avec les enfants et leur impact sur la qualité de l’éducation.  Afin de montrer au grand public les nouvelles manières de philosopher avec les enfants, trois ateliers de pratique seront organisés avec la participation des élèves de classes primaires.

E-Forum avec des jeunes philosophes

MIRó 1 ET 2

Initiative novatrice, le e-Forum des jeunes philosophes sur Facebook et des échanges via Twitter ont été lancés quelques jours avant la célébration officielle de la Journée mondiale de la philosophie, afin d’offrir aux questionnements philosophiques des jeunes un espace universel à travers les réseaux sociaux.  Le 18 novembre 2010, des outils de communication sont mis à disposition des jeunes participants à la Journée en vue de poursuivre le dialogue entamé en ligne sur des thèmes philosophiques préalablement choisis par les animateurs de l’e-Forum. Une session de café philosophique animé par ces derniers permet également de prolonger les discussions.

Salon du livre

FOyER DE LA SALLE I

De nombreux stands seront consacrés aux libraires et aux éditeurs spécialisés dans la philosophie, la philosophie avec les enfants, l’anthropologie, la diversité culturelle et le rapprochement des cultures. Ce salon du livre a pour objectif de mettre en avant la très grande diversité, y compris linguistique, des ouvrages et des documents ayant trait aux questions des sciences sociales et humaines. 

Remise du prix 2009-2010 du Concours philo de la FFCU et lancement de l’édition 2010-2011

HALL SÉGUR — 16 h 15

La Fédération française des clubs UNESCO (FFCU) organise depuis 2006 un « Concours philo » ouvert aux jeunes des clubs UNESCO et à tous les élèves des lycées. Le thème pour 2010-2011 « Peut-on se passer de l’idée d’identité humaine ? Et la notion de genre humain est-elle encore pertinente pour porter cette idée ? » engage la réflexion sur des pistes diverses : responsabilité éthique, téléologie, réflexion sur la « race humaine » ... Le prix de la FFCU sera à cette occasion remis au lauréat 2009-2010, Raphaël Tourneur, élève du lycée Jean Michel  de Lons le Saunier.

Each year, World Philosophy Day is a unique opportunity to bring the international philosophy community together and encourage thought-provoking discussions on contemporary issues.

In accordance with its Constitution, UNESCO endeavours to promote free thinking and dialogue through its activities in the fields of education, culture, science and communication. As the defences of peace must be constructed in people’s minds, it is our duty to work to strengthen those minds through critical thought and mutual understanding.

In 2010, World Philosophy Day will also be marked in connection with the International year for the Rapprochement of Cultures and is therefore of heightened relevance. Philosophy actually teaches diversity lessons through its numerous schools of thought in all eras and on all continents.

In view of the intricacies of current issues, we should tap into that wealth in order to build our capacity to analyse reality. The intensification of exchanges of all kinds holds out great promise for opportunities to share but also entails the risk of misunderstanding and tension. We must together step up efforts to provide everyone with quality education and an enabling environment in which every man and woman can express his or her ideas and enrich public debate in furtherance of justice and peace.

The international organizations, and above all UNESCO, have a major role to play to that end, with the support of all academic, scientific and cultural stakeholders and the involvement of universities, the media, civil society and governments. Philosophy is one of the requirements of our time and its consolidation is one of the main thrusts of my commitment to the new humanism.

On the occasion of this World Philosophy Day, UNESCO will bring philosophers, enlightened citizens and, quite simply, people with enquiring minds together in round tables, conferences and symposia in order to improve understanding of contemporary issues: How can the universality of values be reconciled with the diversity of cultures? What role can philosophy play in the rapprochement of peoples? Eighty international events are being held worldwide with the support of our partners, UNESCO Chairs, the National Commissions and expert networks, such as the International Network of Women Philosophers, so that questioning, the first step towards wisdom, can become as widespread an exercise as possible.

SyMPOSIA

Now that gender has become in a number of 

societies a central or, more precisely, an 

issue of “political correctness” that can no 

longer be ignored, it is requested to give 

women philosophers a voice as a basic right 

even though it is still in fact difficult to 

enforce that right. In this context, is the 

International Network of Women Philosophers 

itself not politically correct? Is this not 

already a view that makes the Network less 

unsettling? 

With this in mind, we should now like 

to examine the concept of “political 

correctness” itself. It cannot easily 

be applied to a field of study combining 

intellectual endeavour and the issue of 

gender. In particular, it inevitably raises 

the issue of standards: are the current 

standards of intellectual work so well (too 

well?) integrated and internalized by some 

of us that they prevent us from seeing and 

thinking?

What is the relevance of Mohammed Iqbal’s 

philosophical thought today? The work of 

the Indian subcontinent’s most renowned 

twentieth-century Muslim poet and philosopher 

is particularly valuable to us today owing, 

above all, to its outstandingly unique 

humanism. By undertaking a permanent dialogue 

between the Islamic and the Western thought, 

Iqbal places human dignity at such a level of 

sublimity and sacredness, that its meaning 

finds a new foundation and future therein. 

What could be more necessary than such 

thoughts at the beginning of the twenty-first 

century when the legacies of civilizations 

meet and nourish each other, no longer rivals 

but rather friends in dialogue?

The “Civilization in Question” research 

project, carried out as part of the 

International year for the Rapprochement of 

Cultures (2010), aims to develop scientific 

reflection on the idea of “civilization”.  

This concept, which is being revived in media 

and political language, encompasses many 

themes such as culture, society, identity, 

religion, globalization and progress.  

In comparing views on classical antiquity, 

India, the Arab world, sub-Saharan Africa 

and Latin America, the research project 

allows for a fresh approach to this topic and 

highlights the main intellectual, cultural, 

ideological and political issues concerning 

the use of the notion of “civilization”. 

Such reflection aims to provide political 

decision-makers and various social partners 

with critical knowledge and thus improve 

their grasp of the issues relating to this 

concept as it is used in various strategies 

to promote intercultural dialogue.

The notion of universal humanity is 

historically a recent development. The way  

in which it first appeared in Europe, in 

Athens, clearly highlights the difficulty 

experienced by human minds when confronted 

with this notion, itself contested in the 

light of cultural diversity. 

The history of civilizations repeatedly 

evinces such opposition, as though, each time, 

the unveiling of the universal also implied 

its veiling. The challenge today is to devise 

ways and means of overcoming the “universal/

diversity” dualism by explaining, with the 

assistance of philosophers, psychoanalysts 

and artists, how the diverse, the different, 

the other, can be seen as originating in a 

universal that is more complex than those 

bequeathed to us by history.

The meeting on New Philosophical Practices 

affords an opportunity for everyone 

interested in the practice of philosophy to 

meet and exchange views. The goal is to make

SyMPOSIA

The symposium “Reason and its struggles — 

Enlightenment, modern rationalism and 

revolution, yesterday and today” will be a 

forum for historical and theoretical debate 

on a struggle that has continued unabated 

since the advent of the philosophy of the 

Enlightenment and, even more so, from the 

French Revolution to the present day. It has 

been a struggle against irrationalism and, 

chiefly, against those schools of thought that 

have taken many forms in the last 200 years 

in their endeavour to condemn any prospect or 

likelihood of any in-depth transformation of 

the dominant order. 

Since 2000, irrationalism has made inroads 

into various areas such as politics, social 

and human sciences, economics, philosophy, 

natural sciences and the psyche. Depending on 

its path, irrationalism has taken the form of 

Providence, biblical creation or subjectivity 

seen ontologically — both founded upon and 

causing ontological disorder — as well as 

insidious forms such as the mathematization 

of unidentified objects and the modelling of 

ideological interests.

day Kazakhstan), Al-Farabi (872-950) studied 

science and music in Baghdad, as well  

as philosophy through the Greeks’ translatio

His contribution to world thought will 

be examined, with emphasis on his study, 

commentaries and dissemination of the works 

of ancient philosophers, in particular 

Aristotle, thus building bridges among 

different cultures and worlds. Analyses and

Exhibition of Photographs on the Links between the East and the West

The exhibition presented from 15 to 25 November 2010 and the debate taking place on 19 November 2010 aim at mitigating the existing ignorance of the impact of both Jewish and Muslim cultures on the development of Europe and reflecting on the issue of their common roots. The public will be able to admire the treasures of the Martin Bodmer collection, one of the most important private collections in the world of papyri, manuscripts and books, situated in Cologny, Geneva.

E-Forum with Young Philosophers

MIRó 1 AND 2

An innovative initiative, the e-Forum with young philosophers on Facebook and exchanges via Twitter were launched a few days before the official celebration of World Philosophy Day to provide, through social networks, a worldwide forum for philosophical discussion by and for young people.  On 18 November 2010, communication tools are made available to young participants in World Philosophy Day to continue the dialogue started on line on philosophical topics selected before hand by the moderators of the e-Forum. A philosophy café session, moderated by the latter, will also allow continuing the dialogue further.

Book Fair

FOyER TO ROOM I

Stands will be dedicated to booksellers and publishers specialized in philosophy, philosophy for children, anthropology, cultural diversity and the rapprochement of cultures. This book fair aims to emphasize the great variety, including linguistic, of books and documents addressing social and human sciences topics.  

Presentation of the 2009-2010 Prize of the FFCU Concours philo and Launch of the 2010-2011 Edition

SÉGUR HALL — 4 : 15 p.m. 

Since 2006, the Fédération française des clubs UNESCO (FFCU) organizes a Concours philo open to young people of UNESCO Clubs and to all high school students. The theme for 2010-2011 “Can we do without the idea of human identity? And is the notion of the human race still relevant to raise this idea?” encourages cogitation on various tracks: ethical responsibility, teleology, thinking about the “human race”, etc. The prize of FFCU will be, on this occasion, presented to the 2009-2010 laureate, Raphaël Tourneur, student of Jean Michel high school, Lons le Saunier.
