L'Hôtel de CrillonL'Histoire

The Story of the Hôtel de Crillon

The Crillon tells a tale of grandeur without bombast: a storythat unfolds behind a perfectly proportioned neoclassical

façade overlooking Place de la Concorde, one of the world’smost magical city squares. Built by order of Louis XV, the hotelbears witness to three centuries of history. Opened to thepublic over one hundred years ago, it quickly attracted asophisticated, cosmopolitan clientele including princes andqueens drawn by its reputation for excellence. The Hôtel deCrillon is now a legend - a standard bearer for luxury hotelsand the epitome of French « art de vivre ».

The Crillon may be a timeless icon, but the bricks and mortaron which its priceless heritage is built are today in need ofsome care. As a result, the hotel closed its doors on 30 March2013 for two years. During this time, extensive renovationsand improvements to the hotel’s interior will be carried out by master craftsmen, in keeping with French tradition, revitalising this historical landmark for many years to come.

The next century will feature listed reception rooms. Like theroom where Marie-Antoinette took her music lessons, alongwith pink marble fountains from the Château de Versailles,“trompe l’œil” ceilings and “bas-relief” featuring “ronde-bosse”techniques, not forgetting the “Elephant” liquor cellar madeby Baccarat, commissioned by the Taittinger family and basedon a masterpiece created for the 1878 Universal Expo in Paris.

The Hôtel de Crillon’s renovation will give chefs ChristopherHache and Jérôme Chaucesse an opportunity to enhance theirexpertise through a combination of travel, engagements andprojects.

From 1992 to 2012, the Hotel de Crillon served as the idealhome for the Bal des debutantes.Since 2013, the hotel undergoes renovations.

In France, in 1957, the Couture House Jean Patou revivedthe tradition. It became an annual event, with débutantes

wearing tiaras, white gowns and white gloves. The political events of May 1968 saw the end of débutanteballs in France.

In 1992, Ophélie Renouard invented a modern version calledle Bal.Each year, she brings together twenty-five vibrant young girlsfrom famous families and the Haute Couture and CoutureHouses make each one of them a representative of their fashion,by dressing them for the event. These Debs need not to introduced to society like in the old days: le Bal is the unforgettable moment of their Couture and Mediapremières.

This annual event, held on Thanksgiving weekend, starts withthe Haute Couture presentation featuring twenty-five Debs. The presentation is followed by a dinner and... le Bal!

The vulnerable girls in South-East Asia are the first victims ofpoverty, and violence. It is vital that these underprivileged girlsobtain an education to protect them from dangers.

Former Debs Milana Brunel, Marie Victoire de Kergorlay, JuliaPiaton de Turckheim and Natalia Zobel, volunteers in centersof Enfants d’Asie, can attest to the courage and determinationof these young girls who are working hard, to obtain theirstudies, despite the odds. Cyril VergniolLe Décorateur / The Interior Designer

Cyril Vergniol is a Parisian designer who first came toprominence for his mastery in the French decorative arts. His

learning took place over his fifteen years with Alberto PintoInternational, where he encountered the eclectic grand gout(neoclassical term for high tastes), extremes in quality that alsoprovide comfort, and the idea of sur mesure, or customised toorder, which is a real marker of luxury.

Vergniol set off on his own in 2008 to create Stylagos, where hewould work in a style that was closer to his own: a timeless chic, borrowed from sober elegance, but still seeking extreme qualityin choice of materials. He has brought his own style to bear oninterior decoration, creating contemporary ambiances that buildon a classical base. In the great tradition of the French decorativearts, he shows an unwavering attention to detail. His know-how is celebrated in France but also internationally;most of his clientele is now abroad.Due to his experience and style, he has been selected toparticipate in the complete renovation of the most famous ofParisian palaces, the Hôtel de Crillon.
