The first Bormioli glassworks dates back to 1825,

but the oldest traces of the Bormioli glasswork mas-

ters are actually to be found in its medieval roots.

This identity going back centuries has led to an asso-

ciation: “When you say glass, you think Bormioli”, in

short, a legend befitting an ancient symbol; and

such is the new trademark: a star, an explosion of

light and energy for a renewed industrial world that

has crossed two centuries of history to confront the

third millennium.

Today, after many important acquisitions in the

1990s, Bormioli Rocco is no longer a single compa-

ny, but a group of companies and production units.

It not only makes glass but has also successfully

added plastic; it is found in Europe and the United

States and also continues to expand into the Far

The pharmaceutical industries must combine, more

and more, the technical perfection of bottles and

containers with functional design that meets the

new packaging needs of health products.

These products must be child-proof, senior friendly

and, when requested, have a special and recogniza-

ble look. Thus, safety and ergonomics are required

as well as, in some cases (for example, over-the-

counter and self-medication products), being eye-

Vetro neutro tipo I - USP e FE

Il vetro tipo I di Bormioli si identifica come un vetro

borosilicato, caratterizzato da un elevato grado di

stabilità idrolitica derivante dalla sua composizione

chimica.

Il vetro tipo I è ideale per contenitori destinati a pre-

parazioni sia a uso parenterale che non. In esso

possono essere confezionati prodotti iniettabili

aventi un pH acido, neutro o leggermente alcalino.

o dopo il riempimento e offrono migliore resistenza

a improvvisi cambiamenti di temperatura rispetto al

vetro sodico-calcico tipo II e III.

Vetro tipo II - USP e FE

Il vetro tipo II di Bormioli Rocco è un vetro sodico-

calcico che, attraverso un appropriato trattamento

della superficie, raggiunge la stabilità idrolitica del

vetro tipo I.

I contenitori in vetro tipo II sono idonei per il confe-

zionamento di preparazioni acide e neutre destinate

sia a uso parenterale che non.

Vetro tipo III - USP e FE

Il vetro tipo III è un vetro sodico-calcico a basso con-

tenuto alcalino con una buona resistenza idrolitica.

La resistenza idrolitica e la resistenza a improvvisi

cambiamenti di temperatura, raggiungono risultati

migliori rispetto al vetro non destinato all’impiego

farmaceutico.

Il vetro tipo III è generalmente adatto per il confe-

zionamento di preparazioni in veicolo non acquoso o

in polvere a uso parenterale, con l’esclusione dei

liofilizzati, e per preparazioni a uso non parenterale.

I contenitori in vetro tipo III sono normalmente ste-

rilizzati a secco prima del riempimento.

The production of all kinds of pharmaceutical glass

takes place in full conformity with the specifications

set by European and American Pharmacopoeia.

The main characteristic of pharmaceutical glass is

chemical stability, which differs depending on the

product with which it comes into contact.

Neutral glass type I - USP e FE

Bormioli type I glass is a borosilicate glass, with a

high degree of hydrolytic stability derived from its

chemical composition.

Type I glass is ideal for containers destined for

preparations both for and not for parenteral use.

They can be used for injectable products having

acidic, neutral or slightly alkaline pH. These contain-

ers may be sterilised before or after filling and offer

better resistance to sudden changes in temperature

compared to type II and III sodium-calcium glass.

Glass type II - USP e FE

Bormioli Rocco type II glass is a sodium-calcium

glass that undergoes an appropriate surface treat-

ment to reach the hydrolytic stability of type I glass.

Containers made of type II glass are suitable for

packaging acidic and neutral solutions destined

both for parenteral and non parenteral use.

Glass type III - USP e FE

Type III glass is a sodium-calcium glass with low

alkaline content and good hydrolytic resistance.

The hydrolytic resistance and resistance to sudden

changes in temperature are better than in glass not

destined for pharmaceutical use.

Type III glass is generally suitable for packaging of

non aqueous or powders preparations for parenteral

use, not including lyophilized preparations, as well

as preparations for non parenteral use.

Containers made of type III glass normally undergo

dry sterilisation before filling.

Le verre type I est idéal pour les produits appelés à

contenir des préparations administrées par voie

parentérale ou non. Il est utilisé pour le condition-

nement des produits injectables à pH acide, neutre

ou légèrement alcalin.

Ces articles peuvent être stérilisés avant ou après le

remplissage et ils garantissent une meilleure résis-

tance que le verre sodocalcique type II et III en cas

de sautes de température soudaines.

Verre type II - USP et FE

Le verre type II de Bormioli Rocco est un verre sodo-

calcique qui, grâce à un traitement approprié de la sur-

face, atteint la stabilité hydrolytique du verre type I.

Les articles en verre type II sont indiqués pour le

conditionnement des préparations acides et neutres

administrées par voie parentérale ou non.

Verre type III - USP et FE

Le verre type III est un verre sodocalcique à basse

teneur alcaline et présentant une bonne résistance

hydrolytique.

La résistance hydrolytique et la résistance aux

sautes de température soudaines atteignent des

niveaux meilleurs que ceux du verre qui n’est pas

destiné à l’industrie pharmaceutique.

Le verre type III est généralement indiqué pour le

conditionnement des préparations non aqueuses ou

en poudre administrées par voie parentérale, à l’ex-

clusion des lyophilisés, et pour les préparations non

administrées par voie parentérale.

Normalement, les articles en verre type III sont sté-

rilisés à sec avant le remplissage.

Vetro giallo ambra

L’uso del vetro giallo ambra, nei tipi previsti dalla far-

macopea, è raccomandato per le preparazioni sen-

sibili ai raggi ultravioletti.

Attraverso l’aggiunta di ossidi coloranti questo tipo

di vetro è, infatti, in grado di proteggere il contenu-

to pur mantenendo una buona trasparenza.

Le farmacopee prescrivono che la trasmissione

della luce debba essere inferiore al 10% della radia-

zione incidente a ogni lunghezza d’onda compresa

tra 290/450 µm (figura 1).

Trattamenti interni ed esterni

Il trattamento interno a base di silicone, applicato ai

flaconi in vetro ambra o trasparente normalmente in

vetro tipo III, li rende altamente repellenti all’acqua.

Di conseguenza, i preparati in polvere, che spesso

tendono ad aderire alla superficie del vetro, posso-

no essere asportati in modo semplice e completo.

Su richiesta, tutti i contenitori in vetro possono

essere trattati anche sulla superficie esterna, senza

contaminare l’interno, con speciali prodotti lubrifi-

canti per ridurre le frizioni e migliorare la resistenza

agli urti e la scorrevolezza sulle linee di confeziona-

mento.

Verre jaune ambre

L’emploi du verre jaune ambre des types prévus par

la Pharmacopée est recommandé pour les prépara-

tions sensibles aux rayons ultraviolets.

En effet, grâce à l’ajout d’oxydes colorants, ce type

de verre est en mesure de protéger le contenu tout

en assurant une bonne transparence.

Les pharmacopées prescrivent que la transmission

de la lumière doit être inférieure à 10% de la radia-

tion incidente à toutes les longueurs d’ondes com-

prises entre 290 et 450 µm (figure 1).

Traitements intérieurs et extérieurs

Le traitement intérieur qui, à base de silicone, est

appliqué sur les flacons en verre ambre ou transpa-

rent, normalement en verre type III, les rend haute-

ment hydrofuges. Par voie de conséquence, les pré-

parations en poudre qui tendent souvent à se coller

sur la surface du verre peuvent être extraites du fla-

con de façon simple et complète.

Sur demande, tous les articles en verre peuvent

également être traités sur la surface extérieure,

sans contaminer l'intérieur, avec des produits lubri-

fiants spéciaux, de manière à réduire les frictions et

à améliorer la résistance contre les chocs et leur

fluidité sur les lignes de conditionnement.

Amber glass

The use of amber glass in the types foreseen by

pharmaceutical authorities is recommended for pre-

parations sensitive to ultraviolet light.

By adding colouring oxidisers this glass is, in fact,

capable of protecting the contents while still being

reasonably transparent. Pharmacopoeia require that

light transmission be less than 10% of radiation bet-

ween 290 and 450 mµ (figure 1).

Internal and external treatments

Internal treatment with a silicone base applied to

amber or transparent glass bottles, usually of type

III glass, makes them highly water repellent.

Consequently, powders, which often tend to adhere

to glass surfaces, may be simply and completely

removed.

Upon request, all glass containers may also be treat-

ed on the external surface with special lubricating

products that reduce friction, and improve shock

resistance and flow along the packaging line, without

contaminating the inside.

Imballi

confezionamento con impianti di imballaggio auto-

matizzati, azzerando ogni contatto diretto con il pro-

dotto rispondendo così alle esigenze imposte dal

settore. Il sistema di fardelli in polietilene termore-

tratto (shrink-wraps) può essere utilizzato per tutti i

tipi di contenitori, dalle piccole alle grandi capacità,

integrato da controlli di processo e automatici di

verifica che ne assicurino forma e fattezza per gli

automatismi annullando ogni impatto di utilizzo

presso il cliente. Altre forme (vassoi e pallettizzazio-

ne a interstrati) vengono fornite, secondo richiesta,

scegliendo i materiali più idonei per abbattere l’e-

ventuale presenza particellare dovuta all’imballo.

Environmental protection systems

Clean room

Already in the mid 80s, people had begun to talk

about “protecting the environment”. Bormioli Rocco

faced the problem in an innovative manner by instal-

ling clean rooms with “Class 100,000” filtered air

along the route containers pass through from the

annealing furnace to the packaging area.

Line coverage

This system involves covering the line with Plexiglas

“carters” from the end of the annealing tunnel to

the bundling machine.

Inverters

Through the use of blowing, inver ting, and aspiration

of bottles in a protected environment, it is possible

to guarantee particle elimination. Inverters use a ver-

tical wheel to turn the bottles over and insert nozzles

with which to send highly purified compressed air

inside the containers. Blowing removes impurities

that are immediately withdrawn by a group of aspira-

tors set inside the structure (figure 2).

These combined actions make “active protection”

against particle contamination possible.

The results obtained demonstrate that this system

makes it possible to reach high performance levels

in accordance with market needs.

Sistemi di protezione ambientale

Clean room

Già a metà degli anni Ottanta si iniziò a parlare di

“ambiente protetto” e Bormioli Rocco affrontò il pro-

blema in modo innovativo con l’installazione di

Camere Bianche ad aria filtrata “Classe 100.000”

posizionate lungo il percorso che il contenitore com-

pie tra l’uscita dal forno di ricottura e la zona d’im-

ballaggio.

Copertura delle linee

Tale dispositivo consiste nel ricoprire la linea con

appositi “carter” in materiale plastico trasparente

(plexiglas) dalla fine del tunnel di ricottura fino alla

macchina affardellatrice.

Capovolgitori

Attraverso la soffiatura, il capovolgimento e l’aspi-

razione dei flaconi in ambiente protetto è possibile

garantire l’eliminazione di particelle.

I capovolgitori dispongono di una ruota verticale per

mezzo della quale i flaconi vengono capovolti e inse-

riti negli ugelli, permettendo di inviare l’aria com-

pressa, opportunamente depurata da un filtro asso-

luto, all’interno dei contenitori stessi.

Il soffiaggio rimuove le impurità che sono immedia-

tamente prelevate dal gruppo di aspirazione, posi-

zionato all’interno della struttura (figura 2).

Queste azioni combinate consentono una “protezio-

ne attiva” verso la contaminazione particellare.

I risultati ottenuti mostrano che questo sistema per-

mette di raggiungere performance elevate e in con-

formità alle esigenze del mercato.

Emballages

Le groupe Bormioli Rocco est muni de lignes de con-

ditionnement équipées de systèmes d’emballage

automatisés et permettant d’éliminer tous les con-

tacts directs avec le produit de façon à se confor-

mer aux exigences propres au secteur.

Le système de packs en polyéthylène thermorétrac-

té (shrink-wraps) peut être utilisé pour tous les

types de récipients de petite ou grande capacité. Il

se complète de contrôles de processus automati-

ques qui garantissent la forme et la précision des

produits, de façon à ce que les automatismes puis-

sent annuler les impacts dus à l’utilisation de la

part du client.

D’autres formes (barquettes et palettisation à dif fé-

rentes couches) sont fournies sur demande, en

choisissant les matériaux les plus indiqués pour éli-

miner l’éventuelle présence de particules provenant

de l’emballage.

Système Qualité

L’entreprise détient la certification ISO 9001:2000.

Elle est également enregistrée auprès d’organismes

de contrôle internationaux, comme la FDA pour les

marchés d’Amérique du Nord, le TPP pour le marché

canadien et la SDA pour le marché chinois.

Packaging

The Bormioli Rocco group has equipped the packag-

ing lines with automated packaging installations,

reducing every direct contact with the product to

zero, and thus meeting the requirements set by the

sector. The shrink-wrap packaging system may be

used for all kinds of containers, from small to large

capacity, and is integrated with process controls and

automatic checks that ensure shape and features

for the automatic processes and eliminating any

impact when used by the client.

Other solutions (multi-layered trays and pallets) are

provided upon request, selecting the appropriate

materials for elimination of any possible presence of

particles caused by packaging.

Quality System

The company has ISO 9001:2000 certification.

It is also registered with international bodies such

as the FDA for the North American market, the TPP

for the Canadian market, and the SDA for the

Chinese market.

Systèmes de protection de l’environnement

Clean room

Le concept de “milieu protégé” a fait son apparition

dès la deuxième moitié des années Quatre-vingt.

Bormioli Rocco a affronté ce problème de façon

innovante en installant des Chambres Blanches à

air filtré “Classe 100.000” agencées le long du par-

cours suivi par le récipient de sa sortie du four de

recuisson jusqu’à la zone d’emballage.

Couverture des lignes

Ce dispositif consiste à recouvrir la ligne avec des

carters en matière plastique transparent (plexiglas)

de la fin du tunnel de recuisson jusqu’à la fardeleuse.

Retourneur-souffleurs

Effectués en milieu protégé, le soufflage, le bascu-

lement et l’aspiration des flacons permettent de

garantir l’élimination des particules. Les retourneur-

souffleurs présentent une roue verticale qui renver-

se les flacons et les introduit dans les buses, ce qui

permet d’insuffler de l’air comprimé, judicieuse-

ment épuré au moyen d’un filtre absolu, à l’intérieur

des récipients. Le soufflage élimine les impuretés

qui sont immédiatement emportées par le groupe

d’aspiration, situé au sein même de la structure

(figure 2).

Ces actions combinées assurent une “protection

active” contre la contamination des particules.

Les résultats ainsi obtenus révèlent que ce système

permet d’atteindre des per formances de haut

niveau et conformes aux exigences du marché.
