QUAND AVEZ-VOUS COMMENCÉ À JOUER AU POLO ?Diego Cavanagh : J’ai débuté très jeune puisque j’avais 6 ans quandj’ai tapé la balle pour la première fois. J’ai commencé à jouer des practices avec d’autres enfants, et à 14 ans j’ai enfin pu intégrer deséquipes d’adultes et participer à quelques tournois.

POUR VOUS, COMME POUR BEAUCOUP D’AUTRES JOUEURS ARGENTINS, LE POLO EST-IL UNE AFFAIRE DE FAMILLE ?Oui, c’est d’ailleurs comme ça que j’ai connu ce sport incroyable dèsmon plus jeune âge. Mon grand-père jouait beaucoup et ses cousinsont remporté à plusieurs reprises l’Open d’Argentine dans les années1940. Mais c’est mon père qui m’a donné le « virus » du polo, je nevoulais manquer aucun de ses matchs, et j’adorais le voir pratiquer. Ilm’a surtout transmis sa passion pour les chevaux. Il en élève d’ailleursun grand nombre aujourd’hui.

QU’EST-CE QUI VOUS PLAÎT TANT DANS CE SPORT ?J’aime tous les sports en général, et ce qui me plaît c’est surtout la

compétition. Si à une époque j'ai souhaité devenir joueur professionnelde football, le polo me permet de vivre une chose indescriptible qu’iln’y a dans aucun autre sport d’équipe : la relation avec l’animal.

QUAND AVEZ-VOUS DÉCIDÉ D’EN FAIRE VOTRE CARRIÈRE ?Contrairement à ce que l’on peut penser, mes parents ne m’ont paspoussé à faire du polo mon métier. Au contraire, ils ont voulu que jefasse des études avant de prendre ma décision. Je suis entré àl’université de Buenos Aires où j’étudiais l’économie, et en deuxièmeannée on m’a offert l’opportunité d’aller jouer professionnellementaux Etats-Unis. La tentation étant trop forte, je n’ai pas pu refuser.C’est à ce moment-là que j’ai stoppé mes études et que je me suisconsacré intégralement au polo.

AU FOND, VOUS EN RÊVIEZ ?Enfant je rêvais de devenir un grand « polista » et surtout de gagnerun jour l’Open d’Argentine. D'ailleurs, j’en rêve toujours !

ET SI VOUS N’AVIEZ PAS RÉALISÉ VOTRE RÊVE, QU’AURIEZ-VOUS FAIT ?J’aurais probablement continué mes études pour satisfaire mesparents, tout en sachant que j’aurais exercé un métier en étroite relation avec les animaux et les chevaux, car je ne conçois pas mettrede côté cette passion.

SELON VOUS, QUEL EST LE MEILLEUR JOUEUR PROFESSIONNEL DE NOS JOURS ?J’hésite entre Adolfo Cambiaso et Facundo Pieres.

NAÎT-ON GRAND JOUEUR OU LE DEVIENT-ON ?Je pense qu’un grand joueur naît ainsi et qu’avec le temps etl’expérience il le devient pleinement. S'il y a un peu des deux, les« cracks » naissent tous avec cette habilité naturelle qui fait la différence.

LE POLO EST ENCORE PEU CONNU EN EUROPE. PENSEZ-VOUS QUE CE SPORTPUISSE Y TROUVER UNE PLACE PLUS IMPORTANTE ?Idéalement, j’aimerais vraiment que le polo évolue mondialement. Je pense que les gens sont d’abord intrigués par cette activité qu’ilspensent trop élitiste avant de l’apprécier réellement. C'est un sport qui sedéveloppe progressivement en Europe, mais il n’est malheureusement

pas encore assez médiatisé pour être connu et reconnu par un plusgrand nombre de personnes. Ce que Deauville a réalisé en 2009, organiserun match de 80 goals hors Argentine intitulé « La Revanche » del’Open de Palermo, avec une retransmission télévisuelle dans lemonde entier, a été un excellent premier pas. J’espère seulement qu'ily en aura d'autres qui suivront pour favoriser le développement dupolo dans l'Hexagone et en Europe.

J'AI ENTENDU DIRE QUE 2009 A ÉTÉ UNE ANNÉE FORMIDABLE POUR VOUS.QU'EN EST-IL ?C’était pour moi jusqu'à présent ma meilleure année grâce à ma saisonen Europe qui s’est extrêmement bien passée. Après l'Angleterre, j’aieu la chance de pouvoir participer pour la première fois à la Coupe d’Orde Deauville dans une formation dynamique et sympathique. C’étaitune expérience vraiment positive. En Argentine, j’ai formé avec troistrès bons amis l’équipe Pilara, et nous avons gagné ensemble laCoupe « Municipalidad » et la « Camara ». Deux des plus importantstournois argentins. Tout cela m'a permis de passer de 6 à 7 de handicapen fin d’année. Alors, comme on dit dans ma langue, « mejor, impos-sible ! ».

QUELS SONT VOS NOUVEAUX OBJECTIFS POUR CETTE ANNÉE ?Mes principaux objectifs sont tout d’abord de faire une belle saison enAngleterre et d'améliorer mon jeu pour avoir l’opportunité de jouer descompétitions de haut niveau dans un futur proche. A Deauville, je veuxque mon équipe puisse avoir un meilleur parcours que l’année passéeet dans ce sens de tout faire pour gagner. En Argentine, je continueavec Pilara et espère pouvoir qualifier la formation pour l'Open deHurlingham et celui de Palermo.

COMMENT S’EST PASSÉE VOTRE INTÉGRATION DANS L’ÉQUIPE D’ALEXANDRESZTARKMAN À DEAUVILLE, L’ANNÉE DERNIÈRE ?Dario Musso, le pilier de l’équipe Polo de Deauville, m’avait téléphonéen me proposant de rejoindre leur formation pour participer à la Couped’Or. Je ne connaissais ni Deauville ni Alexandre. Normalement à cemoment-là j'aurais dû être en Angleterre pour un tournoi de médiumgoal, mais le fait de venir en France pour jouer un polo plus compétitifm'a interpellé et motivé au point de tenter l'aventure normande. Avecle recul, je trouve que l’équipe a bien fonctionné pour une

première année. Il faut être honnête, nous savions tous que deschoses allaient s’améliorer avec le temps. Notamment la force denotre esprit de groupe qui est un atout majeur au sein d’une formation.La rencontre avec Alexandre fut un réel plaisir. Dès le premier jour,nous nous sommes entendus et il m’a beaucoup aidé, aussi bien surle terrain qu'en dehors. C’est un passionné qui se défend très bienpour un amateur et il est un capitaine très investi. Je suis vraiment ravide pouvoir rejoindre à nouveau le groupe pour le tournoi de cet été.

VOYAGER AUTANT VOUS PLAÎT-IL ?Pour le moment, j’aime ça et je trouve que c’est une chance formidablede pouvoir connaître et découvrir de beaux endroits, de nouvelles cultures,des coutumes, des langues et de faire de belles rencontres.J’apprends également beaucoup de choses sur moi durant cesvoyages en grandissant et en évoluant loin de ma famille et de mesamis. Bien sûr, mon pays, mes habitudes et mes proches me manquentsouvent, mais j’espère continuer à voyager ainsi pendant de nombreusesannées. Jouer des matchs fantastiques, dans des lieux aussi différentsqu’extraordinaires, tout en réalisant mes rêves d’enfant, que demandezde plus à la vie ?

QUE PENSEZ-VOUS DE DEAUVILLE, VOUS QUI AVEZ PARCOURU LES VILLES ET LES CLUBS EUROPÉENS ET AMÉRICAINS ?J’avais très souvent entendu parler de Deauville, c’est l’un des plusanciens et renommés clubs en France et même en Europe, mais c’estsurtout le seul endroit où se joue du 20 goals à cette époque del'année. En plus, le club possède de bons terrains de polo et la ville estbelle, comme les filles que l'on croise. J’ai apprécié la qualité del’organisation du club et le fait de pouvoir y jouer un polo rapide et trèsouvert, puis l’ambiance entre les joueurs, l’organisation, et les nombreuxspectateurs sont incroyables aussi bien pendant qu’après les matchs.Deauville est un lieu de villégiature où se respire un air de paix et detranquillité. On ne s’y ennuie pas car il y a de nombreuses activitéspendant l’été et je n’y ai jamais ressenti de pression ou de fatiguementale comme cela peut m’arriver ailleurs.

AVEC VOS DEUX FORMATIONS, QUELS SONT VOS PRONOSTICSPOUR LA COUPE D’ARGENT ET LA COUPE D’OR 2010 ? Pour la Coupe d’Argent, j’intègre pour la première foisl’équipe Hormeta. Si je n’ai encore jamais joué avec Jean-Christophe David, je connais bien mon coéquipier TomasReinoso car nous sommes très amis. Nous allons nous entraînertous ensemble avant le début du tournoi pour trouver la formede jeu la plus adaptée et faire de notre mieux sur le terrain. Sil’objectif est bien évidemment de gagner, il est surtout detrouver une adéquation à la formation pour cette premièrefois. Pour la Coupe d’Or, avec la formation Polo de Deauville,nous avons joué ensemble en 2009, on se connaît très bien,c’est un réel avantage. Nous avons plus de chevaux cetteannée et nous avons tous très envie de gagner. Ce n’est peut-être pas l’équipe favorite mais il faudra se méfier de nous !

WHEN DID YOU START PLAYING POLO ?Diego Cavanagh : I started quite young. I was actually 6 when I first hit the ball. I started with children’s practices,and when I turned 14 I joined adult teams and took part intournaments.

POLO OFTEN HAS A FAMILY HISTORY FOR ARGENTINEAN PLAYERS ; IS THIS THE CASE FOR YOU ?Yes, and that’s why I was familiar with this incredible sport from a veryyoung age. My grandfather used to play a lot and his cousins won theArgentine Polo Open several times back in the 1940s. But it is actuallymy father who truly awakened my passion for polo. I literally could notmiss any of his matches, and loved watching him practice. Above all,he passed his passion for horses on to me. He still breeds a lot ofhorses today.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE SO MUCH ABOUT THIS SPORT ?I love all kind of sports, and what I love above all is competition. Therewas a time when I wanted to become a professional football playerbut polo offers me the opportunity to experience something that is difficult to describe, which does not exist in other team sports – therelationship with the animal.

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE TO MAKE IT YOUR CAREER ?Contrary to what you might think, my parents never pushed me tobecome a professional polo player, quite the opposite. They encouragedme to go and study before making any decision. I studied Economicsat the University of Buenos Aires, and in my second year I was offeredthe opportunity to play in the United States as a professional. I couldn’t refuse; the temptation was too strong. That’s when I stoppedgoing to university and dedicated myself to polo.

DEEP DOWN, WASN’T THIS WHAT YOU WERE DREAMING OF ?When I was a child, I dreamed of becoming a great « polista » andabove all to win the Argentine Open one day. I actually still dreamabout that !

WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THIS DREAM HAD NOT COME TRUE ?I guess I would have stayed at university to please my parents, andwould probably have chosen an animal- and horse-related professionsince it’s a passion I can’t live without.

IN YOUR VIEW, WHO IS THE BEST PROFESSIONAL PLAYER TODAY ?I’m hesitating between Adolfo Cambiaso and Facundo Pieres.

ARE GREAT PLAYERS BORN OR MADE ?I think you are born a great player and that with time and experience,you become totally great. “Aces” are naturals and that makes all thedifference.

POLO IS STILL NOT THAT WELL KNOWN IN EUROPE. DO YOU THINK THIS SPORTCAN GROW THERE ?Ideally, I’d love polo to grow worldwide. I think that before people startto appreciate this sport, they are intrigued because they think it’s forthe elite. It’s gradually developing in Europe but there isn’t enoughpublicity in the media yet. That’s why a majority of people don’t knowabout it, it is not yet popular. What Deauville organised in 2009, i.e. an80 goal match outside of Argentina called “The Revenge” of thePalermo Open and broadcasted all over the world, was an excellentfirst step. I hope there will be more events like this, to promote poloin France and elsewhere in Europe.

I’VE HEARD THAT 2009 WAS A FANTASTIC YEAR FOR YOU ; CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT ?It was my best year so far because of a wonderful season in Europe.After England, I had the opportunity for the first time in my life to takepart in the Gold Cup in a vigorous and nice team. It was a very positive experience. Back in Argentina, I created the Pilara Team withthree friends of mine. Together, we won both the Municipalidad andthe Camara Cups. They are the two major tournaments in Argentina.These experiences raised me from 6 to 7 goal. As we say in my nativelanguage “mejor, impossible!”

WHAT ARE YOUR NEW OBJECTIVES FOR THIS YEAR ?My main objectives are to achieve a great season in England, and toimprove my game so I can access higher levels of competitions in thenear future. In Deauville, I want my team to score better than last year,and to do everything so we win the championship. In Argentina, I’ll carry on with Pilara and hope for our team to qualify for theHurlingham Open, and the Palermo Open.

HOW DID THE INTEGRATION IN ALEXANDRE SZTARKMAN’S TEAM GO IN DEAUVILLE LAST YEAR ? Dario Musso, who plays centre for Deauville Polo called me and invited me to join the team for the Gold Cup. I didn’t know Deauvilleor Alexandre. I was supposed to be in England at this time playing amedium goal tournament but I was truly attracted by the idea ofcoming to France and playing more challenging polo - so I went for theNorman adventure. I think the team worked perfectly during this veryfirst experience together. We all knew very well that things would getbetter with time, especially regarding team spirit, which is a criticalelement in a group. Meeting Alexandre was a pleasure indeed. We goton well from the very first day; he helped me a lot on and off theground. He’s passionate, does very well for an amateur, and he’s avery dedicated captain. I’m really glad to join the group again for thesummer tournament.

DO YOU LIKE TRAVELLING SO MUCH ?For the time being I do. I feel it’s a wonderful opportunity to discoverbeautiful places, new cultures and traditions, new languages, and tomeet really nice people. I learn a lot about myself as I travel and grow,away from family and friends. Obviously, I often miss my country, my

routine and close relatives but I hope to keep on travelling for manyyears. I get to play in fantastic matches, in places that are as differentas they are amazing, my childhood dreams have come true - what elsecan I ask for from life?

YOU HAVE VISITED MANY EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN CITIES AND POLO CLUBS; HOW DO YOU LIKE DEAUVILLE ?I had often heard about Deauville, it’s one of the oldest and mostfamous clubs in France and even in Europe, but above all it’s the onlyone where 20 goals are being played at this time of the year. Also, theclub has great polo grounds, and the city is beautiful, and so are the girlshere. I like the Club’s organising quality, and also the fact that you canplay fast and very open games. The atmosphere between players, theorganisation team and the public are incredible both during and after thematches. Deauville is a holiday resort, which is very peaceful. You can’tget bored, as there are many activities over the summer. I’ve never feltstressed or tired here, which happens to me in other places.

WHAT IS YOUR FORECAST FOR BOTH TEAMS FOR THE SILVER CUP AND THE GOLD CUP 2010 ?For the first time, I’ll be part of the Hormeta team for the Silver Cup.I’ve never played with Jean-Christophe David but I know my teammate Tomas Reinoso very well, we’re very good friends. We’ll bepractising together before the tournament starts in order to find thebest way to play together, and then do our best on the ground. Theobjective is obviously to win the championship but also to refine ourgame as a team as it is the first time we’ll be playing together. For theGold Cup with Deauville Polo, we’ve already been playing as a teamso we know each other very well, which is a great advantage. Wehave more horses this year and we are very motivated. We might notbe the favourite team for the Cup but watch out for us !
