Th e seasons, landscapes, mountains, st reams and even villages
are adorned with unique and diff erent appearances. Th e light
is ever ch anging and the ch arming atmosphere seems almost
sus pended out of time ... whilst everything else happens
elsewhere at full speed.
Allow yourself to be transported into the pyrenean universe of
the Gaves Valleys: the rhythm of the summer sun, the sound of
the cowbells and the sweet smell of the fl owers or even the mild
winter weather and its hus hed atmosphere, both delicate and
magical. Dis cover the blooming of the mountain in the spring,
the footst eps of men and their herds climbing to their summer
past ures or the rich es of a traditional autumn where encounters
are as intense as the purity of the air atop the peaks.
Th e Gaves Valleys are undoubtedly the jewel of the Pyrenees
since
they are home to both some of the most prest igious sites such as
Gavarnie, Lourdes, Cauterets and the Pic du Midi de Bigorre, but
also some more intimate places where a rich , preserved nature
is proposed to all who vis it. Of course men st ill live in these
incredible mountains. So what are you waiting for? Why not dive
into the world of the Pyrenees?

Even without walking ...
Some sites are accessible
by car to watch the sunset,
the sky and the night in the
mountains:
- Cirque de Troumouse
(Gèdre)
- Col des Tentes (Gavarnie)
- Lac du Tech (Val d’Azun)
- Hautacam (Tramassel)
Th e IDSR aims to protect the
st arry sky so that we might st ill
have the opportunity to see it at
night free from light pollution.
Th e link between man and the
sky has been revived; the night
reborn from our imagination
where our gaze may once again
get lost in the sky. Th e species
and the entire noct urnal envi-
ronment are conserved, the
biological rhythms of animals
and humans are no longer ne-
glect ed through our perpetual
quest for light.
Make the most of your st ay in
the Gaves Valleys by experien-
cing the night, discovering the
purity of our sky and the fee-
ling of infi nity, just by looking
up. Opportunities are not lac-
king, here are a few little ideas
for your return to the night and
the st ars.
International Dark Sky Reserve (IDSR)
EXPERIENCE OF CYCLING BY NIGHTEnjoy this unique and enjoyable time:
climbing a legendary mountain by night.
Th e climb is done at your own pace in a
friendly atmosphere to the rhythm of the
musicians and the cheers of encouraging
spect ators. Last year, the climb up Luz
Ardiden was honoured with the sharing
of a good Garbure at the top. Light meal
included, descent supervised, fest ive at-
mosphere guaranteed. Dates and places
coming soon for summer 2014.
EXPERIENCE OF SPENDING A NIGHT IN A GUARDED REFUGETh e Gaves Valleys are home to many guarded moun-
tain refuges with diff erent features and exceptional
views. Th e life of the people who guard these refuges is
punct uated by the comings and goings of climbers, hi-
kers and walkers. To spend a night in a refuge is to dive
headfi rst into the immeasurable purity of the moun-
tain sky, to experience the connect ion between man
and the noct urnal universe, with infi nite concepts
and imagination.
One refuge in particular, thanks to the guardian’s pas-
sion for the celest ial world, off ers guided ast ronomy
observation in the evenings from the terrace, facing
the majest ic Vignemale summit. Th ese observations
are free of charge.
Walking at night awakens our senses and changes our
references in time and space, in short, an experience
worth living and it’s easy to do!
Immerse yourself in a setting where the falling
darkness and silence wrap around you with caring
gentleness. Th e st ars appear one after the other, noc-
turnal wildlife begins to unfurl; a barn owl, a greater
mouse-eared bat or even a common midwife toad ...
By using a headlamp, you will be able to move around
easily, but remember to turn it off in order to appre-
ciate the sky and experience the feeling of infi nity...
In pract ice : many mountain guides off er promenades
by night for the whole family throughout the summer
season. Mountain professional contact details can be
found on page 34.
Keep away from sources of light from cities or villages,
get yourself a good headlamp, some warm clothes and
let yourself be swept away by the noct urnal world.

Th is small mammal, also called
the «trumpet rat» because of
the shape of its nose, lives near
lakes or st reams in the Pyre-
nean mountains. Th e purity of
its habitat is equalled only by
the pure water in the mountain
st reams. It is a discreet and
very diffi cult to observe ani-
mal, making this semi-aqua-
tic insect ivore one of the most
enigmatic of its kind.
Th is insect , a member of the
beetle family, is not limited
to the Alps as is commonly
thought. It is also found in the
Pyrenean forests. It possesses a
kind of rare beauty due to its re-
latively large size (18 to 38mm) ;
its antennae, which st and
tall ; and especially its silvery-
blue colour. In some areas it is
endangered. It is often found
in old beech forest s where it
lays its eggs in dead or dying
trunks. Some lucky residents of
mountain villages sometimes
have the pleasure of observing
it in their st ocks of wood...
Th is plant is a protect ed spe-
cies found mainly in wet envi-
ronments or peaty soil. But
the specifi city of this plant is
not limited to the bright green
of its leaves but also includes
the fact that you can fi nd on
it the makings of a real carni-
vorous plant! In fact , its leaves
are covered with a glue which
traps insect s that land on it,
the plant then digest ing them
using juices secreted from the
leaves.
Here is the legendary bird of
the mountain forest s and more
specifi cally beech grove forest s.
Th e capercaillie, also called the
wood grouse, is part of a group
of birds we call the mountain
galliformes. Its head is cha-
ract erised by a st rong beak and
the bright red wattle above its
eye. Its chest refl ect s a brilliant
blue-green which it shows off
proudly, extended into a wheel
during the mating season or
what is sometimes called the
singing period, in May. Dis-
creet and shy, it is quite diffi -
cult to observe and is very sen-
sitive to dist urbance, especially
in winter, which threatens its
survival. In fact quiet areas are
put in place during the winter
by the Pyrenees National Park.

Man’s conquering of the mountain is also linked to the world of ski resorts. Prouesse, tech nique, a vis ionary view from the post -war... Man knew what to do with some of our valley’s slopes, places where snow and pleasure become one. Barèges lead the way for the Pyrenean resorts by creating its fi rst ski-lift in 1936 with the Ayré ski-lift , the others followed right up to the 70’s and the 80’s. Th e French skiing ch ampionships were organis ed and the Pyrenees gave birth to great ch ampions like François Vignolle, Isabelle Mir... A whole new part of his tory!
Today, the ski resorts evolve by looking for new ways to adapt to the needs and expect ations of their cus tormers us ing principles of sus tainable development and ch anges in weather const raints, but they st ill off er the same snowy dream! In the Gaves Valleys, you will dis cover a surpris ing variety of things proposed by the six ski resorts. Each one invites you to live diff erent experiences, see diff erent sights, ski on diff erent slopes, … going from light sensations to extreme emotions. Whatever your favourite colour, green, blue, red or black , you are sure to fi nd something to please you in our palett e of ski resorts !

Who has never dreamt of playing explorer in the snow, or of wal-
king in the chandeliers created by nature? Or simply list ening to
the silence and observing the ups and downs of animal life in the
mountains during the winter? You don’t have any snow-shoes?
Not a problem, there are several places dotted around our valleys
where you can rent them; make the most of these nordic spaces
which off er you tracks dedicated to this enjoyable past -time. Or
you can live the experience of the great outdoors accompanied by
a mountain guide.
Areas dedicated to snow-shoeing : Bédèret in Luz Ardiden ski re-
sort ; Cauterets and the Pont d’Espagne ; Hautacam ; Val d’Azun ;
the Grand Tourmalet : Plateau du Lienz; Payolle.
What greater feeling of freedom than when you discover a prist ine
mountain of untouched snow or when you put on your skis and
follow a fi xed trail surrounded by silence. Seal skin (synthetic of
course!) under your skis and experience the origins of this act ivity,
the one pract iced before the exist ence of ski resorts. Cross-country
skiing is both discovering the winter mountains and enjoying the
pleasure of sliding across the countrside. Just one day, or perhaps
several days separated by nights spent in mountain refuges, wha-
tever you desire, our high mountain guides will know what to
off er you at your level and in total security.

Nordic areas; small, white, prist ine paradise
Marie has been Chief of slopes and ski patroller in Gavarnie for 10 years. She was the fi rst female Chief of slopes across the whole Pyrenees and manages the safety of the skiers and the quality of ski slopes within the domain.
What does being Chief of Slopes involve?
The post of Chief of Slopes involves simply mana-ging the services on the slopes at the resort, in short, ensuring the safety of the skiers and the quality of the slopes. This role includes several diff erent missions, some of which the public do not see. And yes, most of the time this work is done before the skiers arrive. Our day often starts very early, during the night we must climb to the higher points of the domaine to trigger ava-lanches with explosives in order to make the area safe. Then we must test the quality of the slopes to eliminate hazardous areas so the fi rst tracks in the snow are often our own ... And then, fi nally, there is our most well-known mission, the rescue service on the slopes. We pro-vide emergency fi rst aid in case of an accident, an injury, any discomfort or sometimes we sim-ply off er a shoulder to cry on ... It can range from minor injuries to the rescue helicopter. In short, it’s a very varied job where we must listen to the people and be ready to intervene if necessary.
What is the best moment in the life of a ski patroller, especially one in Gavarnie?
In my case, I have to speak of the best moments, in the plural, because there are several. It might be witnessing the sunrise in absolute silence from an avalanche trigger point after days and days of snow. Or creating the fi rst tracks of the day in the fresh snow. Maybe accomplishing a diffi cult rescue and knowing that everything is back in or-der. Otherwise as the resort closes, I sometimes pause for a moment on the crest of the resort and enjoy the view over the cirque and the Brêche de Roland, or I look down to watch the isards on the slopes in search of the sun or I look up above Mourgat and watch the majestic bearded vul-tures soaring.
And can being a female ski patroller be diffi cult at times?
From the outside, we are often told that we do a man’s job, because we are seen wearing oversized packs, pulling rescue service sleds, throwing ex-plosives ... but here in Gavarnie, out of ten patrol-lers three are women and there were four not that not long ago. The mix works just fi ne, we complement one another and we work fairly. So yes, being a ski patroller is sometimes hard and challenging, but being a female ski patroller is no harder !

Staying in the Pyrenees is not only an intense holiday, it is also meeting a whole culture, know-how, and authenticity which is both conveyed and treasured by its inhabitants. A new concept of «sus tainable» holidays involves consuming the area’s heritage by buying local product s, underst anding the local life by observing the arch itect ure of the barns and the villages, learning about the local people by asking a shepherd about his life and work, in short, being in contact with other people and dis covering mankind.

For as long as man can remember, she-
pherds from the valley have driven their
herds following the rhythm of the seasons
and the local natural resources. During the
summer, the herds move around in total
liberty in order to make the most of the
best grass off ered up by the mountains. In
return, their grazing preserves the quality
of the landscapes. It’s precisely this plant
and wildlife of the high mountains that
brings the succulent fl avour to the meat
from Barèges-Gavarnie. In the autumn,
they decend between 1,000 and 1,800
metres of altitude to graze in the prairies
around their own barns. During the win-
ter, in the sheepfolds at the bottom of the
valley, betwee 600 and 1,000 metres above
Th e Val d’Azun, located in the heart of the
Pyrenean Mountinas, is charact erised by
its emblematic landscapes shaped by its
agriculture. It’s an area which is traditio-
nal for producing the Pyrenean tomme:
cheese made from cows’ milk, ewes’ milk,
goats’ milk or a mixture thereof. For twen-
ty-fi ve years, the cheese producers have
been taking act ion in order to modernise
their product ion tools and their commerce.
Th is mobilisation of the local farmers has
accumulated today in a mutual desire to
mark the identity of the tomme which

sea-level, the animals feast on hay and
grains harvest ed the previous summer.
And in the spring, they head back up to the
barns and rediscover, under the fresh, new
sun, the fi rst grass shoots of spring.
A SHEEP FOUND NOWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD!Over the centuries in this valley, one of
the highest of the Gaves Valleys, man
has succeeded in breeding a race of sheep
which is perfect ly adapted to its territory:
the Baregeois e.
Rust ic, fi ne-boned, with a perfect fl eece, it
resist s the harsh mountain climate and is
sure-footed on some of the more diffi cult to
access terrain.

Bist rots de Pays
Local specialities
Why did you choose to do this job?
I was born into this job... Even when I was very small, my Grandfather and my father took me to follow the herds. Taking over the operation one day was the obvious thing for me to do. Such activity is above all a pas-sion, a choice ... and it’s my choice! I settled in on the family farm, Viella in January 2008 with 200 adult ewes, 50 lambs, 15 doublons* and 5 rams. My parents were already in the AOP Bareges-Gavarnie domain and so I chose to stay there.(*) doublon : A doublon is a castrated male sheep over 18 months old which has spent two seasons in the mountain pastures. This is a required condi-tion to achieve the AOC Barèges-Gavarnie label.
What pleases you the most doing this job?
Being around the animals and being close to the heart of nature is so-mething that I cannot live without. But what I like the most is being my own boss... an offi ce in the open air, work that doesn’t have strict hours, what more could I want? - What news with regard to the AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protégée) ?Some quite important news, and indeed a priority for us, is that we need to rebuild the abattoir in Luz which was destroyed during the fl oods of June last year, this in order to avoid having to transport eve-rything to Bagnères-de-Bigorrre on the other side of the Col du Tour-malet. We also have recurring goals such as attracting more customers and keeping our existing custo-mers (Pic du Midi, Carrefour, ...). In order to achieve autonomy, the AOP Barèges-Gavarnie domaine targets prospective buyers on the market with a view to making the best pos-sible recovery.
What happens in the winter and how do you organise everything?
In the heart of the mountain, at over 1,000m above sea-level, my work is more sustainable in summer than in winter. The main tasks, such as harvesting the hay and slaughtering the animals, take place in the sum-mer. Over the winter, we are more focused on animal care. In addition to that, I work as a snow groomer in the Grand Tourmalet over win-ter, and I have a family at home. My family life allows me, or perhaps forces me, to have work boundaries, to establish limits. Thus I make the most of my work but I am also able to enjoy my personal life and spend time with my family.
