—Dopo il successo della gamma di sedute Doodle, eravamo desiderosi diesplorare le potenzialità della particolare tecnologia delle cuciture sviluppatada Tacchini, per raggiungere dei risultati altrettanto unici.Inoltre, per il nostro lavoro di architetti, eravamo alla ricerca di prodotti che offrissero un certo livello di libertà, nelle situazioni in cui il numero dellepersone che necessitano di una seduta, variasse nell’arco della giornata.

—After the success of our Doodle seating range we were keen on exploringthe potential of the special stitching technology acquired by Tacchini toachieve the unique detailing on the Doodle seats. Later, through our work asarchitects, we were looking for sets of furniture that lend a certain sort offreedom in situations where the amount of people needing a seat fluctuatesthrough out the day.

—Il termine '' interior landscape” a volte è utilizzato per descrivere gli spazi egli arredi all’interno di un ambiente. Nel caso di Quartier, abbiamo sceltoinvece di visualizzare gli interni come un paesaggio urbano astratto. Quartier è una famiglia di tre pouf che abbiamo progettato supponendo chefossero edifici in miniatura. Per ogni “edificio” abbiamo sviluppato unagriglia, come le vetrate delle facciate di moderni grattacieli. La differenza traogni pouf è visibile non soltanto nelle proporzioni globali, ma anche nellagriglia applicata ai lati e al sedile. Il nome deriva dalla parola francese“quartiere”, usato anche per indicare una singola città o una certa area deltessuto urbano.

—The term “interior landscape” is sometimes used to describe interiorspaces and the furniture within them. In the case of Quartier, we have choseninstead to view interiors as an abstract cityscape. Quartier is a family ofthree ottomans that we have designed supposing them to be miniaturebuilding volumes. For each “building” we developed a grid pattern, based onthe glazed facades of modern high-risers. The difference between eachottoman is seen not only in the overall proportions but also in the gridapplied to the sides and seat. The name comes from the French word forquarter, often used to denote a district or city block, a certain area of theurban fabric.

—Abbiamo sempre avuto un debole per le forme morbide. Spin è una famigliadi tre sfere, pouf semplici che possono essere organizzati in gruppi di varie dimensioni. Insieme, ci ricordano le piccole pietre che a volte portiamo a casa dalla spiaggia. Su ogni pouf, abbiamo tracciato una linea singola e ininterrotta. Un ghirigoro quasi ipnotico, a forma di spirale, cucito come a mano. Questa è stata una sfida per i tecnici di Tacchini, che sono riusciti a catturare perfettamente la spontaneità del nostro primo disegno.

—We have always had a soft spot for soft forms. Spin is a family of threeround, soft ottomans that can be arranged in variously-sized groups.Together, they remind us of the small stones we sometimes bring back fromthe beach. On each ottoman we have traced a single, unbroken line. A twirling, almost hypnotic, spiral – stitched in a hand-guided manner. This was a challenge for the technicians at Tacchini but they have succeededin capturing the spontaneity of our first hand sketch perfectly.

—La poltroncina Eddy è semplicemente un’evoluzione dei nostri progetti per Tacchini. È forse più marcatamente ispirata ai tavolini Polar e Meniscus,le cui linee fluide accompagnano lo sguardo intorno all’oggetto. Il concept del rivestimento di Eddy ne permette l’adattabilità, mentre il foro nello schienale, oltre ad attirare l’attenzione, prevede un supporto lombareergonomico. Volevamo realizzare una seduta semplice per l’ambientedomestico e contract, che fosse iconica ed allo stesso tempo rilassante perl’occhio, anche in composizioni multiple. Una scultura pratica.

—The Eddy chair was quite simply a continuation of our designs forTacchini. It perhaps most clearly follows on from Polar table and Meniscuswhose fluid lines carry the eye around the object. With Eddy the upholsteryconcept also allows for adaptable designs and the hole in the back, although simply eye catching forms a sophisticated ergonomic providinggood lumbar support. We wanted to produce a simple chair that would be athome either in the domestic or contract environment that would be iconic yetcalming on the eye when placed in multiples. A practical sculpture.

—“La Sancarlo è nata sulla base di una richiesta fattami dalla Driade. Erano vent’anni che non progettavo una poltrona, dall’epoca in cui con miofratello Pier Giacomo avevamo disegnato la Sanluca, che io considero ancoraun pezzo molto importante. È stata molto lodata dalla critica ma non haavuto successo, perchè non capita dalla produzione. Nel nuovo progetto, l’ideadell’articolazione in poggiareni-poggiaschiena-poggiatesta si riferisceesplicitamente alla Sanluca: è un’impostazione ergonomicamente correttaripresa con la tecnologia di oggi, che permette di definire cuscini indipendentia densità differenziata. La struttura si basa sulla tecnologia del tubo curvato, bauhausiana memoria: prima di tutto perchè funziona ancora. Solo al posto della tradizionale finitura cromata è stata adottata unaparticolare verniciatura che oltre alla scelta del colore consente un maggiorepiacere tattile.

In realtà non avevo nessuna voglia di disegnare un’altra poltrona e a un certopunto stavo quasi per rinunciare. Ma devo dire che è stata molto importantel’idea dell’imprenditore di fornire una struttura preordinata, sedile epoggiareni, sulla quale siamo stati chiamati a progettare in tre: Deganello,Mendini ed io. Il gioco dei tre personaggi intorno a un pezzo obbligato, mi ha stimolato quasi in una gara tra studenti a chi fa il pezzo più bello, mi ha molto divertito. E, stimando i compagni di scuola, la competizione miha fatto sentire più giovane e mi ha coinvolto in un lavoro che ha dato spuntoa momenti di dibattito progettuale molto interessanti e simpatici.”

—“The Sancarlo was born of a request made to me by Driade.It was twentyyears since I had last designed an armchair, at a time in which myself and my brother Pier Giacomo had designed the Sanluca, which I still consider tobe a very important piece. It had been very well acclaimed by critics at thetime but never had success because it was not born of a production concept. In the new project, the concept of separate elements for the lumbar support,back support and head rest comes entirely from the Sanluca chair. It is anergonomic feature which is strong and valid and can now be introduced withtoday’s technology utilising different density and independent cushions. The structure is based on bent tube, evoking memories of Bauhaus: the reasonfor this being simply that it still works. The only thing which has been changed is the finish,- in place of the traditional chrome a paint finish allowschoice of colour and a finish which is pleasingly tactile.

To be truthful I had no real desire to design another armchair and I wasalmost at the point of giving up, but I have to say the idea of using a standardstructure and the basic elements of seat and lumbar support and being askedas one of three, myself, Deganello and Mendini, to compete in the designintrigued and inspired me to the point where I felt I was a young studentagain wanting to prove something and yet part of an environment in whichthe debate was intriguing and lively; this for me was very interesting and apleasure to be a part of.”

Perché rimettere in produzione un progetto di Pier Giacomo e AchilleCastiglioni del 1958?

Babela è una poltroncina che nasce per l’arredamento della Camera di Commercio di Milano del 1958, in particolare per la sala convegni e verràmessa in produzione da Gavina, imprenditore che inizierà, proprio inquegl’anni, a collaborare coi fratelli Castiglioni. La poltroncina con strutturadi ferro e con imbottitura squadrata uniforme, sia sulla seduta che sulloschienale, è stata progettata per essere confortevole, per mantenere inposizione eretta la persona seduta, ed inoltre doveva essere impilabile senzasprechi di spazi per facilitare l’utilizzo alternativo dei luoghi nei quali eracollocata. Con lo stesso principio, ma con piccole migliorie, gli eredi Castiglionie l’azienda Tacchini hanno voluto sperimentare per la struttura portante un altro materiale: il legno.

È rimasta invariata la forma e l’imbottitura; l’impilabilità è stata agevolatadall’alleggerimento della struttura e si è data la possibilità di sfoderareagevolmente l’imbottito. Pensando alle esigenze dei giorni d’oggi lapoltroncina è stata immaginata sia per sale riunioni, come all’epoca della suaprogettazione, sia per gli alberghi e la ristorazione. Nasce così la nuovaedizione della poltroncina impilabile Babela (il nome, un inevitabile richiamoalla torre di Babele). Dopo uno studio attento sul prototipo con l’aziendaTacchini si è arrivati ad un risultato di indubbia modernità e anche se ilprogetto risale ai tempi d’oro del design italiano, oggi è ancora di notevoleeffetto. Una poltroncina lineare e di classe, ridotta alla minima espressioneutile, come piaceva ai fratelli Castiglioni.

—Why put back into production a piece by Pier Giacomo and AchilleCastiglioni from 1958?

Babela is an armchair which was designed for the interiors of the Chamber of Commerce in Milan in 1958. In particular it was designed for the meetingrooms and was put into production by Gavina, a manufacturer who just then began to collaborate with the Castiglioni brothers. The armchair had a metal structure and a very square and uniform upholstery, on the seat aswell as the back. It was designed to be comfortable whilst helping to maintainan upright position and furthermore to be stackable to minimise the use of space when not in use. With the same principles and with minorimprovements, the family of Castiglioni and the Tacchini company decided to experiment with the structure by using wood instead.

The general shape and upholstery remained unchanged producing a muchlighter chair and in addition easily removable cover. Bearing in mind theneeds of today it has been designed as it was back in the 1950s for meetingrooms, hotels and restaurant areas. And so the new edition of the stackableBabela armchair is born (the name Babela coming from biblical tower ofBabel). After a lengthy development and appraisal of the prototype withTacchini the result is undoubtedly modern success even if its roots are fromthe golden age of Italian design. An armchair with class and elegance, an expression of minimalism with its reduced forms, just as the Castiglionibrothers would have liked.

—Le forme arrotondate sono sinonimo di morbidezza e comodità ma anche diuna voluminosità che spesso compromette la leggerezza di un prodotto. Ildesigner Gordon Guillaumier è partito da questa considerazione per creare lapoltrona Curve. La sua struttura è composta da tre elementi uniti in modo chei contorni siano definiti da bordi sottili, anziché da volumi pesanti. Il risultatoè pieno e leggero, accogliente e dinamico allo stesso tempo.

—Rounded shapes often stand for softness and comfort yet sometimes alsoconvey a sense of bulkiness that often undermines the lightness of a product.This thought was uppermost in designer Gordon Guillaumier’s mind when he set out to create the Curve chair. Its structure is made of three elementsheld together so that the contours are defined by slender edges, rather than byheavyset forms. The result is a full-framed yet lightweight creation that iswelcoming but dynamic at the same time.

—Le forme della natura, rappresentano una delle principali fonti di ispirazionedel designer Gordon Guillaumier. Il piano del tavolino Coot, ispirato alla pura e semplice geometria di un petalo, è un motivo perfetto per comporre unamolteplicità di modelli diversi, partendo da un unico modulo. La struttura disostegno è pensata per permettere al piano di librarsi sopra una poltrona o undivano: una funzione particolarmente utile quando si utilizza un computerportatile.

—Nature’s shapes represent a major source of inspiration for designerGordon Guillaumier. The top of the Coot table was inspired by the simplegeometry of a petal; it is a perfect motif for generating a variety of different models from one single form. The support structure is designed to allow the top to open up over a chair or sofa, a particularly useful featurewhen using a laptop computer.

—The design of Gordon Guillaumier’s Cage coffee table centers on the use of metalstrips which have been stamped with a slight bending radius so as to soften thegeometry of the whole and to adapt to the rounded shapes of the chairs and sofas.

—Dressed è un divano “vestito” di cuscini, che vengono incorporati all’internodella fodera, diventando parte integrante della sua estetica. Solitamente icuscini vengono pensati separatamente dal divano: Luca Nichetto, ispirandosiai rigonfiamenti protettivi in uso nel mondo dello sportswear o alle classiche“toppe” degli abiti, propone in questo caso un divano dall’aspetto soffice econfortevole, dove la morbidezza è il risultato del riempimento della foderastessa. La dimensione del divano, che è il primo di una famiglia di prodotti, èsia pensata per un uso in ambienti domestici, che destinata ad un uso contract.

—Dressed is a couch “clothed in” cushions, which are inserted into the sofacover and thus become an integral aspect of the object’s aesthetic. Althoughcushions are usually designed independently of couches, Luca Nichetto is hereproposing a comfortable, yielding sofa whose softness is achieved by stuffingthe cushions right into the sofa’s own fabric cover. Inspiration for the ideacame from the protective padding frequently used in sportswear today andfrom the old-school application of patches to clothing. The sofa, which is thefirst object in an upcoming line of furniture, is of a size that works equally wellin both domestic and professional contexts.
