States and Union Territories
India, a union of states, is a Sovereign, Secular, Democratic Republic with a Parliamentary system of
Government. The President is the constitutional head of Executive of the Union. In the states, the
Governor, as the representative of the President, is the head of Executive. The system of government in
states closely resembles that of the Union. There are 28 states and 7 Union territories in the country.
Union Territories are administered by the President through an Administrator appointed by him. From the
largest to the smallest, each State/UT of India has a unique demography, history and culture, dress,
festivals, language etc. This section introduces you to the various States/UTs in the Country and urges

Battle of Hastings (1066 A.D.)²This war was fought between England and Normans in 1066 A.D. KingHarold of England was defeated and England came under the Norman control.

an end by the sacrifice of Joan of Arc.
War between Henry VII and Richard (1455-85)²It was a civil war fought in 1455-85 between Henry VII
and Richard (The Duke of York) both claiming the British throne on Henry VI¶s death. Richard was
defeated in this war.

Gulf War-2 (March 20, 2003 to April 2003)²The US led coalition forces launched a full scale attack on
Iraq on March 20, 2003. It made use of the latest and the fiercest weaponry to subdue the Iraqi forces.
Baghdad fell on April 9, 10 and other cities followed suit. By April 20 the coalition armies were in fullcontrol of Iraq. It marked the downfall of President Saddam Hussein

ANNUITY Payment of a fixed amount periodically for a limited time. It is aninvestment on which the owner receives not only interest on his

BALANCE OF TRADE The difference between the value of imports and exports. It is
favourable when the value of exported goods exceeds the value of imported goods. If it is reverse balance is unfavourable.

Statements of accounts, generally os a business house prepared at
the end of a year, showing debits and credits under broad heads, inorder to find out the profit and loss positions in the outgoing year.
