EVERYONE COUNTS CENSUS 2020

WHY DOES THE CENSUS MATTER?

It’s about fair representation. Every 10 years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of

Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets. It’s also about redistricting. After each decade’s census, state officials redraw the boundaries of the

congressional and state legislative districts in their states to account for population shifts.

February 2 – the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord – deserves more attention than just being the absolute final day for the Christmas decorations. At the beginning of the eighth century, Pope Sergius inaugurated a candlelight proces-sion; at the end of the same century the blessing and distribution of candles which continues to this day became part of the celebration, giving the feast its popular name: Candlemas. (Candlemas is a Christian holiday occurring annu-ally on February 2 that is commemorating the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple when he was a baby. It occurs 40 days (inclusively) after Christmas Day. The term "Candlemas" (meaning Candle Mass) refers to the practice of the blessing of candles by the priest during a church service ("mass") for use during the year in church and in the homes of the faithful.) The American secular news/meteorological event of Groundhog Day is also February 2. Groundhog Day is what is foremost in many minds when February 2 is mentioned. After celebrating the Nativity of our Lord, with its splendor in both the Church and the popular culture, it would be easy for one’s mind to drift and overlook the significance of the fortieth day after the Lord’s birth. But we should look beyond our hustling to banish the decorations to the attic, the obsession over the days remaining in this strenuous win-ter, and endless chatter about Super Bowl Sunday. Because the events set in motion with the Annunciation and Nativi-ty continue with the significant presentation of our Lord in the Temple. Joseph and Mary’s presentation of the baby was no pro forma event. The words of the prophet Malachi are fulfilled in the poor parents presenting their firstborn son along with their humble sacrifice of two turtledoves. (Now I am sending my messenger— he will prepare the way before me; And the lord whom you seek will come suddenly to his temple; The messenger of the covenant whom you desire—see, he is coming! says the LORD of hosts. Malachi 3:1) The mother of God – the Theotokos, in no need of ritual purification – and her husband Joseph did not set themselves above the Law. In their conformation to the Law is God’s entrance into his Temple. Simeon and Anna, pious and elderly, having spent their lives in prayer and waiting in the Temple for the Messiah, have their ‘moment.” There is the glorious Nunc Dimittis of Simeon. With Candlemas we celebrate the coming of the Light of the World. But a shadow also passes; a shadow foretelling the suffering that will precede the victory of the Light over darkness. Simeon not only proclaimed that he had seen his salvation, but also told the Mother of our Lord that her share would include a sorrow pierced heart. In Redemptoris Mater, Pope John Paul II wrote that Mary heard in Simeon’s words something akin to a second An-nunciation, “for they tell her of the actual historical situation in which the Son is to accomplish his mission, namely, in misunderstanding and sorrow. While this announcement on the one hand confirms her faith in the accomplishment of the divine promises of salvation, on the other hand it also reveals to her that she will have to live her obedience of faith in suffering, at the side of the suffering Savior, and that her motherhood will be mysterious and sorrowful.” This is where it starts to get ‘real’, i.e. moving past the holly, tinsel, and jolly carols. The tiny child snuggled in the crèche a few weeks ago is now revealed to be a sign of contradiction. His gentle obedient mother faces a future of sor-row. Simeon asked to depart in peace. What shall we ask of the Lord as we celebrate his Presentation?

Saint Blaise (Blasius) was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise." In the Middle Ages, Blaise became quite popular and his legend as a beast tamer spread. He was then referred to as the "saint of the wild beast."

Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He retired to a cave surrounded by wild beasts, where he remained in prayer. In 316, Agricola, the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, arrested then-bishop Blaise for being a Christian. He was found by the hunters of the governor and arrested for refusing to sacrifice to pagan idols.

One story says that on their way to the jail, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet. At Blaise’s command the child was able to cough up the bone. Blaise cured the child, and though Agricola was amazed, he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. Agricola, tried to persuade Blaise to sacrifice to pagan idols. The first time Blaise refused, he was beaten. The next time he was suspended from a tree and his flesh torn with iron combs or rakes. Finally, he was beheaded.

Another story says that when Blaise was arrested for his Christian faith and being led to the prison in Sebastea, he came across a poor old woman whose pig had been stolen by a wolf. Blaise commanded the wolf return the pig, which it did -alive and uninjured - to the amazement of all. In gratitude, the woman came to him and brought two fine wax candles in an at-tempt to dispel the gloom of his darkened cell.

In many places on the day of his feast the blessing of St. Blaise is given: two candles are consecrated, generally by a prayer, these are then held in a crossed position by a priest over the heads of the faithful or the people are touched on the throat with them. At the same time the following blessing is given: "Per intercessionem S. Blasii liberet te Deus a malo gutteris et a quovis alio malo" (May God at the intercession of St. Blaise preserve you from throat troubles and every other evil). In some dioceses is added: "in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus" (in the name of the Father, and Son and Holy Spirit) and the priest makes the sign of the cross over the faithful.

Saint Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The similarity of the steel combs and the wool combs made a large contribution to Saint Blaise's leadership as the patron saint of wool combers and the wool trade.

St. Agatha, also known as Agatha of Sicily, is one of the most highly venerated virgin martyrs of the Catholic Church. It is believed that she was born around 231 in either Catania or Palermo, Sici-ly to a rich and noble family. From her very early years, the notably beautiful Agatha dedicated her life to God. She became a consecrated virgin, a state in life where young women choose to remain celibate and give themselves wholly to Jesus and the Church in a life of prayer and service. That did not stop men from desiring her and making unwanted advances toward her. However, one of the men who desired Agatha, whose name was Quintianus, because he was of a high diplomatic ranking, thought he could force her to turn away from her vow and force her to marry. His persis-tent proposals were consistently spurned by Agatha, so Quintianus, knowing she was a Christian during the persecution of Decius, had her arrested and brought before the judge. He was the Judge. He expected her to give in to his demands when she was faced with torture and possible death, but

she simply reaffirmed her belief in God by praying: "Jesus Christ, Lord of all, you see my heart, you know my desires. Pos-sess all that I am. I am your sheep: make me worthy to overcome the devil." With tears falling from her eyes, she prayed for courage. To force her to change her mind, Quintianus had her imprisoned - in a brothel. Agatha continued to proclaim Jesus as her Savior, Lord, Life and Hope. Quintianus ordered her to be tortured. He had her stretched on a rack to be torn with iron hooks, burned with torches, and whipped. Noticing Agatha was enduring all the torture with a sense of cheer, he commanded she be subjected to a worse form of torture and ordered that her breasts be cut off. She was miraculously cured by St. Peter, but unmoved, Quintianus had her stripped naked and rolled naked over hot coals which were mixed with sharp shards. Aga-tha prayed, "Lord, my Creator, you have ever protected me from the cradle; you have taken me from the love of the world, and given me patience to suffer: receive now my soul." St. Agatha is the patron saint of Sicily, bellfounders, breast cancer patients, Palermo, rape victims, and wet nurses. She is also considered to be a powerful intercessor when people suffer from fires.
