Created in 2013 under the “Espace Remarquable de Bretagne” label, the Regional Natural Reserve of the Crozon peninsula’s geological sites is a protected area that is recognised for its outstanding natural heritage. Spread over the 120 km of the peninsula’s shores, its 27 coastal sites have been singled out for their outstanding geological heritage as well as for the natural habitats and the biodiversity to be found there.

From outstanding geological heritage…Formed at the bottom of the sea, the Crozon peninsula’s subsoil consists mainly of sedimentary rocks that are hundreds of millions of years old. These are essentially sandstone and schist corresponding to ancient deposits of sand and silt that have consolidated, sometimes revealing conditions and
traces of life from the past (animal fossils, worm tracks, ripple-marks). Limestone rocks resulting from the sedimentation of shells, marine life, and magmatic rocks resulting from volcanic eruptions add to the geo-diversity of this outstanding terrain.
… to rare andendangered speciesLocated at the interface between land and sea, the sites of the nature reserve also offer a mosaic of natural habitats (cliffs, moorland, dunes, silt flats, caves…) that are home to a significant biodiversity. Here, one can spot common shore species such as European gorse1, the silver gull2, and wall lizard3, not to mention the rare and protected species such as the Shrubby Gromwell4 (deep blue flower), the Marsh Fritillary5 (butterfly with the colours of autumn) and the Red-billed Chough6 (a bird with an acrobatic flight that nests in the cliffs).

Protecting, enhancing and showcasing these resources are the three major missions of the nature reserve, which is run by the Communauté de communes Presqu’île de Crozon – Aulne Maritime. This activity receives financial support from the Région Bretagne, Europe and the Communauté de communes.

Safety advice
Located on cliffs, the sites of the nature reserve are naturally unstable and potentially dangerous. For your safety, keep to the coastal footpaths, visit the sites at low tide and keep away from the base of cliffs to avoid cliff falls. Take care not to become trapped by the sea in coves and caves.
Regulations
For everyone’s enjoyment of this heritage, it is forbidden to deface and remove rocks, minerals and fossils, to destroy the flora and fauna, to leave rubbish, to light fires, to camp and to drive a motor vehicle on the nature reserve.
The Maison des Minéraux - an educational partner of the nature re-serve - offers numerous discovery activities for everyone (nature walks, family outings tinkering with geology, museum visits…).
