Belle initiative que d’avoir créé un petit salon il y a quatre ans pour mettre en vedette les créateurs de joaillerie français qui n’ont pas forcément l’opportunité d’être visibles du grand public. Myrtille Mousson en a eu cette idée car elle s’est passionnée pour le bijou précieux. Cette année son événement « Mes créateurs joailliers » devient « Un Bijou pour Noël ». Rendez-vous à partir du 16 novembre au soir !

Quel est votre parcours professionnel ?Après des études de publicité, j’intègre les agences reconnues BDDP/TBWA en tant que chef de fabrication. Puis je découvre l’audiovisuel qui ne me séduit pas plus que cela. Je travaille alors pour une société de divertissement où là, expérience très formatrice, j’apprends la maîtrise de gestions de projets, de ressources humaines et celle de la direction d’une structure. Mais vers 2009 je me dirige vers le bijou ; d’ailleurs je me forme à l’époque aux quatre niveaux de l’Institut National de Gemmologie.

Comment êtes-vous venue au monde du bijou précieux ?C’est ma vie personnelle qui m’a amenée aux professionnels du bijou. Mon mariage a été l’événement déclencheur. Mon mari m’a demandée en mariage pendant des vacances au Maroc. Cela a été assez impromptu car il n’avait pas de bague de fiançailles. De retour à Paris, je vais donc chercher ma bague Place Vendôme. Mais je découvre d’autres filières, celles des pierres nues à faire monter, les négociants en diamants aussi… Je vais dans les ateliers de fabrication parisiens. Bref, cette recherche de bague par l’enquête me donne une vision globale de l’univers de la joaillerie et même celui du bijou d’occasion car j’achète une bague des années 1950 à Drouot. Et là c’est le déclic.

Et la suite ?En seconde expérience, j’achète des bijoux d’occasion et je les revends en petit comité par réseau. Je complète ma formation en visitant des ateliers, et par les modules de l’Institut National de Gemmologie. Je commence même à faire de la création, mais là je m’aperçois que je préfère exposer les vrais créateurs. Et là me vient l’idée d’un salon de bijoux pour le grand public.

Selon vous, que doit exprimer une création joaillière ?C’est un bijou qui possède une histoire que l’on peut raconter ; j’ai plusieurs anecdotes personnelles avec ma collection de bijoux. C’est la raison pour laquelle ceux-ci sont précieux pour moi ; cela dépasse la notion de la valeur pécunière de la joaillerie. Par rapport à l’ensemble de la parure (chapeau, sac, chaussures…), le bijou est la pièce la plus intime, surtout le bijou de créateur créé sur-mesure pour la personne qui le porte. La joaillerie est tellement liée à des événements de vie aussi (mariage, rencontre, naissance et même rupture parfois !).

Que va-t-on découvrir sur l’événement « Un bijou pour Noël » en novembre ?Vous allez découvrir dans un écrin très parisien de Saint-Germain des signatures que vous n’avez pas forcément la possibilité d’acheter. C’est pointu,

confidentiel ! J’offre un écrin digne de leur savoir-faire de joaillier. Certains travaillent pour la Place Vendôme. Mais ils s’affirment par leur propre collection très personnelle. C’est un peu the « place to be » pour voir des joailliers différents et passionnés par les gemmes aussi.

Pourquoi avoir changé le nom de l’événement ?C’est surtout parce que j’ai voulu faire comprendre au grand public que c’était l’événement clef pour offrir un bijou à Noël. Avant c’était parfait mais pas assez lisible du grand public. Là, avec ce nom il est évident que le bijou qui exprime le sentiment, l’exception, le cadeau affectif souligne le fait que la joaillerie reste encore un élément clef pour le cadeau à une personne que l’on aime.

Formée à la gemmologie, quelles sont vos gemmes préférées ?J’ai une vraie passion pour le spinelle rouge, le spinelle intense. Le vert du grenat « mint » m’intéresse beaucoup tout comme le grenat spessartite. Enfin, j’ai un vrai faible pour les indigolites.

Esthétiquement, avez-vous une préférence pour une époque dans l’histoire global du bijou ?J’ai vraiment deux facettes : je peux aimer autant le destructuré comme le très construit ; donc je peux

aimer la recherche de matière incroyable comme les lignes de l’Art Déco. J’ai d’ailleurs fait monter une bague style Art Déco pour le plaisir. Mais je peux apprécier un bijou qui m’étonne vraiment. Je fonctionne aux coups de cœur. C’est comme cela que je construis cet écrin. Et j’espère que je vais étonner aussi le grand public par le savoir-faire joaillier ou par la créativité insolite.

Etes-vous collectionneuse ?Quand je suis tombée dans le bijou et à travers ma formation de gemmologie mais aussi grâce à un voyage au Sri-Lanka avec le gemmologue Patrick Voillot, j’ai « flashé » sur les pierres ; elles me parlent ; ainsi je les collectionne. Leur lumière, leur couleur, leur spécificité. Et comment elles vont se transformer en bijou précieux ? Oui j’ai commencé une collection ; j’en possède une vingtaine et j’espère que les rencontres vont faire progresser cette collection de gemmes magiques.

Comment dénicher ces gemmes ?Je vais voir les professionnels et j’ai fait un « voyage gemmes » avec Patrick Voillot ; c’était superbe je suis même descendue dans les galeries ! Et puis j’ai trouvé mon saphir du Sri-Lanka qui m’a vraiment donné envie de continuer. La pierre est tellement vivante !

Pourquoi venir sur l’événement grand public UN BIJOU POUR NOËL ?Si vous avez envie d’offrir à Noël un bijou très créateur, avec une valorisation des gemmes. Si vous aimez la Place Saint-Germain. Si vous aimez une offre non standardisée et si vous appréciez le savoir-faire français alors UN BIJOU POUR NOEL vous séduira. Je me bats pour la création, les joailliers créateurs, le made in France, l’insolite et la beauté des pierres ; j’ai tout résumé. Alors rendez-vous au 17 novembre ! u

It was certainly a great idea to set up a small trade show four years ago to highlight French jewellery designers that might not otherwise have had the chance to get some visibility among the general public - and Myrtille Mousson is the one that had the idea, as she is passionate about precious jewels. This year, her event ‘Mes créateurs joailliers’[‘My jewel designers’] has become ‘Un bijou pour Noël’ [‘A jewel for Christmas’]. Make it a date, from the evening of 16th November!

What has been your career trajectory?After studying marketing, I joined the well-known agencies BDDP/TBWA as head of manufacturing, and then I came across audio-visual, which did not appeal to me all that much. I worked for an entertainments company, and that was a great learning experience – I learned project management, human resources and all about running an organisation. In around 2009 I turned towards jewellery, and actually I got myself some training around that time covering the four levels of the National Institute of Gemmology.

How did you get into the world of the precious jewel?It was my personal life that got me into the jewellery industry. The trigger event was my marriage. My husband asked me to marry him during a holiday in Morocco. It was quite a spontaneous thing, as he didn’t have an engagement ring. When we got back to Paris, I went to find a ring at Place Vendôme. I came across other domains there – that of single stones to be set, and diamond traders too. I went to visit Parisian manufacturer studios. In short, the act of seeking out a ring through making enquiries gave me a holistic view of the world of jewellery, and even of secondhand pieces as I bought a 1950s ring at Drout. So that was the start of it all.

What happened after that?The second experience was going out to buy secondhand jewels, then selling them within a small network group. I fleshed out my training by visiting studios and by doing modules at the National Institute of Gemmology and I even began to design them, though at that point I realised that I preferred to showcase real designers. Then the idea came to me to put together a jewellery show for the general public.

What, in your view, should a jewel design express? It’s about a jewel that has a story that you can tell. For my jewel collection, I have several personal accounts to tell, and that is the reason they are special to me – it goes above and beyond

any notion of the jewel’s monetary value. Compared to a whole outfit – hat, bag, shoes and so on – the jewel is the most intimate piece, especially one that has been specially made for the wearer. Jewellery is also so closely linked to major life events such as marriage, meetings, birth and sometimes even splitting up!

What might one discover at the event ‘Un bijou pour Noël’ in November? Visitors will find names that they might not actually be able to buy at the very Parisian setting of Saint-Germain, after all this is a confidential, specialist event! I provide a setting that does justice to the jeweller’s know-how. Some of them work for the Place Vendôme, but they are showcasing their own highly personal collection. It’s very much the place to be to see different jewellers that are also enthused by gems.

Why did you change the event’s name? I did this mainly to show the general public that it was a key event for Christmas gift purposes. Before the name change it was perfect, but not really clear enough to the general public. Now with the name change it’s clear that a jewel that expresses a sentiment as a one-off event - an emotional gift - highlights the fact that jewellery is still a key element of a gift to someone that you love.

You have gemmology training – what are your favourite gems?I have a real passion for red spinel, the intense spinel. I really like the green of the mint garnet, likewise the spessartite garnet. And I also have a weakness for indigolites.

Aesthetically, do you have a preference for a particular era in the world history of the jewel?I have two facets to this issue really: I can love the de-structured piece as much as the highly-structured ones. I love the search for incredible materials like the Art Deco lines. In fact I have had an Art Deco style ring mounted for the sheer pleasure of it, but I can also appreciate a jewel that really amazes me. I go with what hits me emotionally, and that is how I have put together this backdrop. hope that I will likewise amaze the general public with the jewellery know-how and unusual creativity available.

Are you a collector? When I got into jewels both through my gemmology training and also via a trip to Sri Lanka with the gemmologist Patrick Voillot, I fell in love with stones - they spoke to me and so I collected them for their light, their colour, their specificity. How would they become a precious jewel? Yes, I have begun a collection. I have around twenty, and I am hoping that further encounters will cause this collection of magic gems to grow.

How do you hunt down these gems?I go and see trade professionals, and I undertook a ‘gem trip’ with Patrick Voillot – it was superb, and I even got to go down into the tunnels! Then I came across my superb Sapphire from Sri Lanka that really made me want to carry on. The stone is so alive! At the show, you’ll meet jewellers that really start out with a precious stone for their creation.

Why should people come to the event for the general public that is UN BIJOU POUR NOËL?Come along if you want to give a gift at Christmas of a jewel that is well-designed, where the gem is the highlight. Come if you love the Place Saint-Germain. If you want to give a gift that is unusual, and if you appreciate French know-how then UN BIJOU POUR NOEL is for you. I champion good design, jewellery designers, things that are Made in France, things that are unusual and the beauty of stones. Really, that’s it - so I’ll see you on 17th November! u
