Yabby U - FireFire / Judgment Time Yabby You - Jah Over I One of seven children, Jacksonleft home at the age of twelve to find work at a furnace in Waterhouse. Atseventeen, the effects of malnutrition had left him hospitalized, and on hisrelease he was left with severe arthritis which had partially crippled his legs. His

physical condition meant that he was unable to return to his previous work, andhe was forced into hustling a living on the streets of Kingston. His Christian

beliefs were markedly different from that of his Rastafarian comtemporaries, which often prompted debate on religio-philosophical matters, and it was after one of these discussions that Jackson first headed towards a recording studio, having heard music "like a strange ting, inside a my thoughts - like an angel asing". Another spell in hospital meant that finding money for recording wasdifficult, but eventually the "Conquering Lion" single was released late in 1972,credited to Vivian Jackson and the Ralph Brothers. Cut for King Tubby, the

popularity of the song and its distinctive introduction (the chant of "Be-you,yabby-yabby-you") earned Jackson the nickname "Yabby You", which hasremained with him during his entire career. wikipedia

preacher mother and a policeman father, as one of five children. He left school at14, and started work in his teens as a cab driver and hotel mechanic at theSkyline and Sheraton hotels in Kingston. From singing at work, he graduallyworked his way up to become the top deejay of the Lord Tippertone sound. Hisfirst recording, the Gregory Isaacs produced "Movie Man" didn't really do much,

but further ventures increased his profile, and by the time Youth worked with producer Keith Hudson, he was at his peak. His "S.90 Skank" went gold, (& red& green) just like the jewels he had sometime dentist Hudson place in his frontteeth. In between he cut some killer material with Gussie Clarke which resultedin the fabulous "Screaming Target" LP. In 1973, Youth formed his own labels,

Negusa Negast and Augustus Buchanen, and these quickly saw some qualityreleases, but Mr. Buchanen still found time to work with other producers, suchas Prince Buster, Joe Gibbs, Derrick Harriott and Winston Riley. Due to his

phenomenal output at this time, Jah Youth at one stage had 5 of the top 10singles in Jamaica. Jah Youth cut a version of The Wailers "Keep On Moving"with Lee Perry, "Mooving Version" in 1972, as well as two version's of BunnyWailer's song "Bide Up", ("Bide", and "Black On Black"). Youth kept up the

pace through the mid-1970's with other great tracks, such as "House Of DreadLocks", "All Nations Bow", "Wolf In Sheeps Clothing", "Mosiah Garvey"and too many more to mention. These songs helped make Big Youth a superstar in Jamaica, and he soon travelled to England with a young Dennis Brown, tostage some spectacular live shows. The Youth Man was backed by The Ark

Angels, and Brown by Joe Gibbs and The Professionals, giving Englishaudiences a first hand taste of what was hot in Jamaica.

 je ne peux croire que c'est réel ce que tu me fais sentir, jeferai tourner la terre ;

Tu dois me croire, je tombe mon amour et quand tum'embrasse fort tu me fais me sentir si bien.

Page 17: Philosophie Rasta Chap.3

Steel Pulse's debut album set the band decisively apart from i... Steel Pulse'sdebut album set the band decisively apart from its British colleagues. This wasnot, by any stretch of the imagination, either pop-reggae or lovers rock. Nor wasit the kind of dreamy Rasta reggae or art-for-art's sake dub that was popular atthe time. Though the subtly jazzy swing that would later become explicit wasalready informing Steel Pulse's groove, the band's first album seemed not at allinterested in generating anything like a party atmosphere. HandsworthRevolution is about politics first and religion second, with a quick nod to thedance ("Sound System") and another to the herb ("Macka Splaff") and not asingle love lyric to be found anywhere. This gives the music a certainintellectual urgency, and the band's instrumental virtuosity is impressive given

its youth and relatively inexperience. But it also makes for a rather dry listeningexperience; other than "Ku Klux Klan" and the gorgeous "Prodigal Son," there's

Page 28: Philosophie Rasta Chap.3

not much to hold onto here, melodically speaking -- and even those two songssound dry in comparison to the band's subsequent work. Still, there's a solidity tothese tunes, a sheer tensile strength, that makes them compelling in their ownSpartan way.

formed as the trio(3). "Ashanti" Roy Johnson (tenor) (b. Roydel Johnson, 1947,Hanover, Jamaica), Cedric Myton (falsetto) (b. 1947, Saint Catherine Parish,Jamaica), and Watty Burnett (baritone) (b.early 1950s, Port Antonio, Jamaica).[1][2] Myton had previously been a member of The Tartans in the late 1960s(along with Prince Lincoln Thompson, Devon Russell and Lindburgh Lewis),and Ras Michael's group, and had recorded with Thompson's Royal Rasses inthe mid-1970s.[3][4] He formed the Congos, initially as a duo with Johnson, recording the single "At the Feast" for Lee "Scratch" Perry.[1] Perry expandedthe group to a trio with the addition of Burnett, this line-up recording the classicroots reggae album Heart of the Congos in 1977 at Perry's Black Ark studio.[1]The album featured illustrious backing singers such as Gregory Isaacs, The

Meditations, and Barry LLewellyn and Earl Morgan of The Heptones.[4] Thealbum has been described as "the most consistently brilliant album of Scratch'sentire career".[5] Perry's previous productions by Max Romeo and Junior

Murvin had been huge commercial successes thanks to a deal with IslandRecords, but Perry was in dispute with Island at the time the Congos' album wasfinished, so it was released on his own Black Ark label, limiting its successoverseas, and causing a rift with the group.[1] The Congos went their own way, organizing a limited pressing of the album themselves. United Kingdom label

Go Feet eventually reissued the album in 1980, and although the group hadrecorded new material since leaving Perry, Heart of the Congos proved a hardact to follow and their other releases suffered as a consequence. Albums such asCongo Ashanti were sparser and sounded ordinary compared to Perry's kitchen-sink-and-all massive productions. Burnett quit the group, soon followed byJohnson, who embarked on a solo career. Myton continued to record as TheCongos with various other musicians until the mid-1980s. In the mid-1990s, TheCongos reformed, with Myton and Burnett joined by Lindburgh Lewis, severalalbums following in subsequent years.[1] In 2005 Myton recorded Give Themthe Rights with a host of backup singers and star session players such as Sly andRobbie and Earl "Chinna" Smith, very much in the spiritual 70s roots vein. In2006, the UK reggae revival label Blood and Fire released the album FishermanStyle featuring a remixed version of the classic cut "Fisherman" from Heart of the Congos plus such legends as Horace Andy, Big Youth, Dillinger, PrinceJazzbo, Luciano, Freddie McGregor, Gregory Isaacs, Max Romeo, Mykal Rose,Dean Fraser, Sugar Minott, and U-Roy doing their own new versions over theoriginal rhythm.[6][7] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Congos

84 6:11 ቴዲ  አፍሮ  Teddy Afro: Nigeregn Kalishgn [HD] ቴዲ አፍሮ ; real name: Tewodros Kassahun, in Amharic: ቴዎድሮስ ካሳሁን) is a

popular Ethiopian singer. In 2001, Teddy released his debut album, Abugida, named after the Abugida syllabary of the Ge'ez language. Several tracks quicklycaught the ear of many listeners in Ethiopia – Halie Selassie, a tribute to the lateEmperor of Ethiopia Haile Selassie I; Haile, Haile, a single in honor of theOlympic long distance champion Haile Selassie; and Mona Lisa, a song aboutthe measure of human beauty. His second album, Yaste seryal, was released in2005. The release of this album coincided with elevated political tension inEthiopia surrounding the Ethiopian general election, 2005. His politically andsocially inspired songs vibrated a call for unity and peace. However, some of hissongs were not welcomed by the supporters of the government. In his latest songdedicated to the Ethiopian Millennium and entitled Musika Heiwete(Music is

My Life), the renowned Ethiopian popular singer, Teddy Afro (TheodrosKassahun) traces the genealogy of his music to classical Zema or chantcompositions of St. Yared, the great Ethiopian composer, choreographer and

poet, who lived in Aksum almost 1500 years ago. Teddy, who is widely knownfor his songs mixed with reggae rhythms and local sounds, heart warming andenlightening lyrics, shoulder shaking and foot stomping beats, blends his latestoffering with sacred musical terms, such as Ge'ez, Izil, and Ararary, termscoined by St. Yared to represent the three main Zema compositions. In so doing,he is echoing the time tested and universalized tradition of modernity that has

been pioneered and institutionalized by Yared. Teddy seems to realize theimportance of seeking a new direction in Ethiopian popular music by

consciously establishing links to the classical and indigenous tradition of modernity of St. Yared. In other words, Teddy Afro is setting an extraordinaryexample of reconfiguring and contributing to contemporary musical tradition

 based on Yared's Zema.
