une célébration du progrès !Chaque année, les festivaliers demandent “Quel est donc votre secret ? Comment gardez-vous les choses fraîches et créatives année après année ?”

Et la réponse est vraiment très simple : nous nous concentrons exclusivement sur le progrès ! En fait, c’est cette même méthode de réflexion prospective qui m’a permis de démarrer le Festival il y a 31 ans avec mon ami Charles Magras. Nous nous sommes demandés “Que pouvons-nous faire culturellement l’année prochaine, qui serait très spécial pour Saint-Barth ? La première année nous avons donc fait quelque chose d’innovant : nous avons apporté la musique classique professionnelle sur notre petite île bien-aimée au milieu de la mer des Caraïbes ! Et depuis, chaque année, notre festival continue d’innover, de progresser, et toujours avec la plus haute qualité possible.

Avec l’aide annuelle de généreux donateurs comme vous, qui contribuez aux revenus indispensables sur lesquels ce Festival repose, nous pouvons bâtir notre fondation de la musique classique. Nous avons prévu de la musique classique de renommée mondiale ainsi que de l’opéra et du jazz et de la danse et des programmes éducatifs et de sensibilisation des seniors et... La liste s’allonge encore et encore ! Ainsi, lorsque vous me saluez lors d’un concert, votre don en main et que vous vous demandez ce que je pense, maintenant vous savez ! Nous sommes impatients de jouer, d’échanger culturellement, de démarrer les programmes éducatifs qui sont stimulants, engageants et excitants autant pour nos artistes que pour les spectateurs... et les progrès futurs à venir !

Every year, supporters ask “So what IS your secret? How DO you keep things fresh and creative year after year?”

And the answers are really very simple: we concentrate exclusively on progress! In fact, that method of forward thinking is exactly how the Festival got started over 31 years ago when I began this work with my friend Charles Magras. We asked one another “What can we do next year, culturally, that will be very special for St. Barth?” And so in the first year we did something brand new: we brought professional classical music to our beloved little island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! And every year since then our Festival has added new aspects that are innovative, progressive, and always of the highest quality possible.

With the annual help of generous sponsors like you, who contribute the much-needed monies that this Festival relies upon, we can build our classical music foundation. We have included world-class classical music and opera and jazz and dance and childrens’ educational programs and senior outreach and... The list of progress goes on and on! So when you greet me at a concert with your donation in hand and you’re wondering what I’m thinking, now you know! I’m thinking that we’re looking forward to performances, cultural exchange and educational programs that are stimulating, engaging and exciting for our performers and generous audience members alike... and the future progress to come!

Nous voulons d’abord remercier les Communautés Catholiques de Lorient et de Gustavia. le Père Firorenzo Rossi et les soeurs, ainsi que la Communauté Anglicane et le Révérend Charles Vere Nicoll qui depuis plusieurs années nous ouvrent les portes de leurs églises. Sans cet accompagnement fidèle et précieux, les concerts n’auraient pas lieu.

Les RemerciementsFestival de MusiQue 2015

Depuis 1985, le Festival de musique scande la vie de notre île et s’inscrit presque naturellement dans notre paysage artistique et culturel. Cette évidence ferait presque oublier que cet évènement existe grâce à la passion, au travail et à l’exigence de ses organisateurs. La programmation proposée sera encore une fois de grande qualité, tant par le choix des œuvres que des interprètes.

Le Festival de musique est une de ces pierres fondatrices sur lesquelles s’édifie patiemment une vie culturelle et artistique riche à Saint-Barthélemy.Chaque année, l’offre s’enrichie, se diversifie et se complète. Cinéma, littérature, musique, danse, théâtre, peinture, sculpture : tous les arts ou presque ont désormais leur place, soit à l’occasion d’évènements culturels, soit au travers de nombreuses associations, de galeristes ou de mécènes. Ces initiatives formidables se complètent et résonnent entre elles. La programmation du Carnaval des animaux de Camille Saint-Saëns pour cette 31ème édition du Festival fait écho aux sculptures de l’artiste Bjorn Okholm Skaarup exposées sur le parvis de l’Hôtel de la Collectivité depuis novembre 2014. De ce foisonnement naît le dialogue des œuvres. Je suis certain que l’année 2015 ouverte en beauté par le Festival de musique poursuivra cette dynamique vertueuse.

Le Roberts Marcus Trio est très connu pour son style virtuoses. Ce Trio a une totale nouvelle approche de l’interprétation du Trio Jazz. La vision de Robert du Trio Jazz a rapidement progressé après le choix du percussionniste Jason Marsalis pour la présidence en 1994 (quand Jason avait tout juste 17 ans). Tous les musiciens du Trio partagent équitablement cette évo-lution de la musique par le changement de son tempo, son humeur, sa texture, ou de sa forme, à travers un système de signaux musicaux. L’énorme talent indi-viduel de chaque membre du Trio est spectaculaire avec le son puissamment rythmique du groupe. D’où l’impression d’entendre un groupe bien plus important que trois personnes sur la scène. L’un des aspects agréable du Marcus Roberts Trio concert est qu’il donne aux spectateurs l’impression que ces trois mu-siciens ont réellement du plaisir à jouer ensemble.

The Marcus Roberts Trio is known for its virtuosic style. This trio has an entirely new approach to jazz trio performance. Roberts’ vision of the jazz trio grew rapidly following the selection of drummer Jason Marsalis for the drum chair in 1994 (when Jason was just 17). All the trio’s musicians share equally in shaping the direction of the music through changing its tempo, mood, texture, or form, through a system of musical cues. Each trio member’s enormous individual talent is showcased along with the powerfully rhythmic group sound. This makes it sound like a lot more than three people up there on the stage! One of the most enjoyable aspects of a Marcus Roberts Trio concert is that it is so apparent to the audience that these three musicians are really having fun playing together.

Burak Baryton-basse T Bass BaritoneIl est un baryton-basse né en Turquie. Il a chanté dans les principaux opéras aux Etats-Unis et en Europe. Il a été le tout premier gagnant à la BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Il fit l’ouverture de la saison 2009-2010 avec San Francisco Opera debut comme Ferrando dans Il Trovatore. Pour la saison 2008-2009, il fait son retour au Metropolitan Opera en tant que Ferrando dans Il Trovatore puis dans le même rôle au Grand Théâtre de Genève. C’était le soliste du Carnegie Hall pour sa production de Stabat Mater de Dvorak et ses futurs engagements seront avec Washington National Opera comme Zaccaria à Nabucco. Récipiendaire de nombreuses récompenses, il a engrangé les premiers prix de l’International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition 2002 à Vienne.

He is a operatic bass-baritone born in Turkey. He has sung in leading opera houses in the United States and Europe. Guillaume Acteur T ActorOriginaire de St Barth, Guillaume étudie aux Etats-Unis et arrive à Paris en 2002. Attiré par le cinéma depuis son plus jeune âge, il suit alors plusieurs formations théâtrales (Bob McAndrew, Patricia Sterlin,...). On peut le voir dans des courts métrages, des téléfilms ainsi que des pièces de théâtre en France et en Angleterre telles que Ne m’envoyez pas de fleurs de Norman Barasch & Carroll Moore, Incendies & Littoral de Wajdi Mouawad, Les Parents terribles de Cocteau, the Zoo Story d’Edward Albee.

Native of St Barth, Guillaume studies in the United States and arrives to Paris in 2002. Attracted by the cinema since his youngest age, he does several theatrical trainings and coachings in front of the camera

(Bob McAndrew, Patricia Sterlin,...). We can see him in short films, television films as well as plays in France & in England such as Send me no Flowers of Norman Barasch & Carroll Moore, Incendies & Littoral of Wajdi Mouawad Les Parents Terribles of Cocteau, the Zoo Story of Edward Albee.

Karin Trompette T Trumpet Karin Bliznik a rejoint le Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra comme Trompettiste Principale en 2013. Avant de rejoindre le SLSO, Karin a occupé le poste d’Associée Principale dans le Atlanta Symphony ainsi que les princi-paux postes avec Santa Fe Opera, Charlotte Symphony, et le Charleston Symphony. Karin a passé l’été dernier en faculté et jouait avec le Festival Orchestra au Aspen Music Festival dans le Colarado. Les aspects du festival regroupaient Spoleto, Aspen, Eastern Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival au Japan, et la Lucerne Music Festi-val en Suisse sous la direction de Pierre Boulez. Elle a aussi été partenaire au centre de musique de Tanglewood. Karin Bliznik joined the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra as Principal Trumpet in September 2013. Prior to

joining the SLSO, Karin held the Associate Principal position in the Atlanta Symphony as well as Principal positions with the Santa Fe Opera, Charlotte Symphony, and the Charleston Symphony. Karin spent this past summer on faculty and performing with the Festival Orchestra at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado. Festival appearances include Spoleto, Aspen, Eastern Music Festival, Pacific Mu-sic Festival in Japan, and the Lucerne Music Festival in Switzerland under the direction of Pierre Boulez. She has also been a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center.

Cyril Danseur T Dancer Né en 1986 à Marseille, il commence la danse à l’âge de huit ans dans sa ville natale. Il entre à l’École de danse de l’Opéra en 1999. Engagé dans le corps de ballet de l’Opéra en septembre 2004, il danse depuis dans diverses productions du répertoire et notamment dans Etudes (Harald Lander), Giselle (d’après Jean Coralli et Jules Per-rot), Suite en blanc (Serge Lifar), La Belle au bois dormant, Roméo et Juliette, Le Lac des cygnes, La Bayadère, Don Quichotte de Rudolf Noureev, Paquita, La Fille mal gardée de Pierre Lacotte, Le Boléro, L’Oiseau de feu de Maurice Béjart, L’Arlésienne, Le Loup, Rendez-vous de Roland Petit, Sylvia et La Dame au camélias (entrée au répertoire) de John Neumeier… En tant que soliste, il est distribué dans la pièce de Mallory Gaudion Abel lors des soirées “Jeunes danseurs” de l’Opéra en mai 2006. Il est aussi distribué dans la pièce du chorégraphe Marseillais

Michel Kelemenis intitulée Réversibilité lors de la dernière soirée “Jeunes danseurs” en mai 2014.

He was born in Marseille in 1986 where he began dancing at the age of eight. He joined the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1999 and entered the Paris Opera Corps de Ballet in September 2004. He has danced in many of the Paris Opera productions, namely Etudes by Harald Lander, Giselle, Suite in White by Serge Lifar, The Sleeping Beauty, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, La Bayadère, Don Quixote by Rudolf Nureyev, Paquita, La Fille mal gardée by Pierre Lacotte, Le Boléro, The Firebird by Maurice Béjart, L’Arlésienne, Le Loup, Rendez-vous by Roland Petit, Sylvia and The Lady of the Camellias by John Neumeier, amongst others. He danced as soloist in Abel était by Mallory Gaudion during the Paris Opera performances entitled ‘Jeunes danseurs’ (Young dancers) in May 2006. He also danced a soloist role in Réversibilité by Michel Kelemenis, during the recent ‘Jeunes danseurs’ performances in May 2014.

Matthew Contrebasse T Double Bass Il rejoint la section double basses de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Louisiane en Septembre 2010. Matthew a été un membre de l’Orchestre Symphonique de New World à Miami Beach et de l’Orchestre Symphonique Albany. Richard, a founding member of the Enso String Quartet is a native of New Zealand. He enjoys teaching and playing on various series throughout North America. Much of his time is taken with the Enso Quartet, touring and producing highly successful recordings. He is Principal Cellist of the River Oaks Chamber

Orchestra and a regular performer for Music in Context. Richard plays on a N.F. Vuillaume cello made in 1856.

Born in Auxerre (Yonne), France in 1988 where he started dancing at the age of 8 and joined the Paris Opera Ballet School the following year. Roberta Cooper won the Artists International Competition which sponsored her Carnegie Hall debut. She is a member of the Walsh-Drucker-Cooper Trio, which performs extensively in Washington, D.C., New Orleans and New York City and most recently Europe. Ms Cooper is the assistant principal cellist of the American Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra and the Westchester Philharmonic. She has performed with the Berlin and Brooklyn Philharmonics, the New York City Opera and the ballet orchestras of NYC and ABT. Ms. Cooper has performed alongside harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper and the Berkshire Bach Society for many years. She has also been a guest with the Emerson Quartet.

With Morton Gould she commissioned two compositions for young audiences (“The Jogger and the Dinosaur” and “Hosedown”), which have had many international performances. The new Principal Trumpet of Los Angeles Philharmonic, is Thomas Hooten. In 2000, Mr. Hooten earned a trumpet/cornet position with “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C., where he was a featured soloist. He acted as Principal Trumpet in the Atlanta Symphony from 2006-2012. Thomas has appeared as a soloist with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and as a guest principal in the Saint Louis Symphony, and the Grand Teton Music Festival. For the last two summers, Thomas has served on the faculty for The Aspen Music Festival, acting as a guest artist and teacher.

Matthew Alto TViolaIl apprend la musique dès l’âge de 7 ans. Il est membre de l’Orchestre Philarmonique de Berlin et obtient le Prix du Concours International de « GEE » d’Alto. Il devient en 1985 l’assistant de Masao Kawasaki au Conservatoire de Musique du Collège de Cincinnati. Matthew possède une Maîtrise en Art et Musique. Il quitte Ottawa où il était l’Alto Principal Associé de l’Orchestre du Centre National des Arts du Canada (1991 à 1995) pour intégrer le Philharmonique de Berlin. C’est un musicien multi-instruments qui joue également de la guitare, fait des arrangements musicaux et joue au sein des Solistes-Stradivari du Philarmonique de Berlin.

He began music lessons at the age of seven. He is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and won the Gee International Viola Competition. In 1985 he became Masao Kawasaki’s assistant at Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. He also earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy at Dartmouth College as well as a Malter of Music and Artist’s Diploma. He came to the Berliner Philharmoniker from Ottawa, where from 1991-1995 he was associate principal viola of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra. He is a versatile musician, who also plays the guitar, makes arrangements and plays in the Berlin Philharmonic Stradivari Soloists.

Robert Flûte T Flute Robert Langevin occupe le poste de Flûte Principale au New York Philharmonic. Robert Langevin is the Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. In May 2001, he made his solo debut with the Orchestra in the North American premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with Philharmonic Principal Harp Nancy Allen and Music Director Kurt Masur. His October 2012 solo performance in Nielsen’s Flute Concerto was recorded for inclusion in The Nielsen Project, the Orchestra’s multi-season traversal of all of the Danish composer’s symphonies and concertos. Prior to the Philharmonic, Mr. Langevin held the Principal Flute Chair of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Mr. Langevin served as associate principal of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, playing on more than 30 recordings.

Jason Percussions T DrumsJason a commencé sa profession de percussionniste à quatorze ans et a étudié les percussions classiques au sein de l’Université Loyola. Il est le plus jeune d’une famille de musiciens très connus à la Nouvelle Orléans avec son père Ellis et ses frères Wynton, Branford et Delfeayo. Plus récemment, il joue du vibraphone et a réalisé son premier album intitulé « Music Update » en tant que leader vibraphoniste en 2009. En 2011, la famille Marsalis a reçu le Jazz Masters Award du National Endowment for the Arts.

Jason began playing drums professionally at age fourteen and studied classical percussion at Loyola University. He is the youngest member of the famous New Orleans musical family that includes his father

Ellis and brothers Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Most recently, Jason has been playing vibraphone. In 2009, he released his first album as leader on the vibes entitled “Music Update”. Marsalis, with his father and brothers, are group recipients of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award.

Maestro Mercurio has conducted more than forty-five different operas in six different languages. His engagements include many Italian opera houses and his American appearances include the opera companies of Dallas, San Francisco, and Philadelphia. Other international engagements have been at the Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the English National and the Bonn Opera. He has conducted the London Philharmonic, the Luxembourg and Vienna symphonies in addition to his own conducted the Royal Philharmonic on Sting’s international “Symphonicity” tour.

Jon studied music privately from the age of six, and first came to world attention in 1997 when he won the gold medal in the tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He subsequently toured as a soloist throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan. He continues international touring and this past year gave two performances at the Beijing International Piano Festival. His most recent CD release with the Rochester Philharmonic features Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue. Coming soon in his first CD with Jon Manasse playing Brahms clarinet sonatas.

Maureen Violon T ViolinMaureen rentre au Centre Gifted Young Musicians de l’Université Temple à l’âge de douze ans. Elle a passé ses diplômes à l’Université de Yale et à l’Institut de Musique Curtis. Maureen was enrolled in Temple University’s Center for Gifted Young Musicians at the age of twelve. She holds degrees from Yale University and The Curtis Institute of Music where she began attending while in

high school. Maureen is a two-time winner of the Greenfield competition and has been awarded top prizes in numerous competitions. As a founding member of the Grammy-nominated.

Jeffrey Lyman has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 2006, and has earned a reputation as both an eminent performer and historian of the bassoon and its repertoire. Recent activities include his membership in the Rushes Ensemble, which in the fall of 2012 recorded and gave the premier performances of a groundbreaking 50-minute work for 7 bassoons by New York composer Michael Gordon. Also in 2012 he launched a publishing venture with TrevCo Music, and so far has issued 9 editions of works for bassoon by the great French, Italian and German bassoon pedagogues of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the summer of 2013, he and his colleagues Nancy Ambrose King and Martin Katz recorded five classic duos and trios for oboe, bassoon and piano, including works by Jolivet, Villa-Lobos, Poulenc, Grandval and Planel.

Alec Clarinette T ClarinetA l’âge de 16 ans obtient le premier prix de la International Clarinet Competition 2014. Il est également le vainqueur de nombreuses Compétitions de Concerto. Il a aussi joué en musique de chambre au Alice Tully Hall, et au Carnegie Hall. Alec a commencé ses études de musique à l’âge de 4 ans avec une scolarité pleine de succès dans une école spéciale de musique à New York City, et est actuellement scolarisé au Juilliard Pre College Alec a aussi participé au programme de proximité Musicale de St Barth dans toutes les écoles de l’île. Sixteen year old, Alec Manasse became The 2014 First Prize winner of the International Clarinet Competition. He is also the winner of various concerto competitions. He has performed chamber music at Alice Tully Hall and at Carnegie Hall. Alec began his studies at 4 years old winning a full scholarship to the Special Music School in NYC, and is currently a Scholarship student at the Juilliard Pre College. Alec has participated in the St.Barts Outreach Program performing for all the schools on the Island. This season marks his continued devotion to the Island of St Barts and to the Festival de Musique.

In 2003, Roberts premiered his ground-breaking arrangement of Gershwin’s “Concerto in F for Piano and Orchestra” with Maestro Ozawa in Japan and then with the Berlin Philharmonic.

Eric is an internationally renowned French horn player whose solo career began at the age of twenty when he was named the associate principal horn player with the Cleveland Orchestra. He has won several awards including first prize in the 1987 American Horn Competition, and the highest prize in the 1988 “Concours International d’Interprétation Musicale in France”. Eric has performed as a soloist with many orchestras across America, including the Cleveland Orchestra and the Baltimore, Indianapolis and Milwaukee Symphony Orchestras. He has been a Professor of Horn at Boston University since 1990.

EMMY Award Winner, two-time GRAMMY nominee and Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, Richard O’Neill has appeared as soloist with the London, Los Angeles, Seoul and Euro-Asian Philharmonics and the BBC orchestras. As recitalist he has performed at Carne-gie, Avery Fisher, Alice Tully, Wigmore, Tokyo’s International Forum and Opera City, Osaka Symphony Hall and Seoul Arts Center. He is a UNIVERSAL/DG recording artist and has made eight solo albums. Richard is an Artist of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center as well as being Artistic Director of DITTO (his South Korean chamber music initiative). He was honored with a Proclamation from the New York City Council for his achievement and contribution to the Arts. He serves as Goodwill Ambassador for the Korean Red Cross.

Before joining the North Carolina Symphony, Brian Reagin was Assistant Concertmaster with the Pittsburgh Symphony, under Music Directors Andre Previn and Lorin Maazel. He is the concertmaster of the North Carolina Symphony and of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra. Reagin has performed recitals in Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Washington. He has toured Japan, China, Canada and Puerto Rico and performed numerous recital and chamber works in Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. On television he performed with Andre Previn and Yo Yo Ma, and the Claude Bolling Jazz Suite for Violin.

Mark Basson TBassoon Mark Timmerman est membre de l’Orchestre Symphonique du New Jersey et a été durant toute une saison Basson Principal du Metropolitan Opera de New York. Mark Timmerman is a member of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and spent a season as Principal Bassoon of the Metropolitan Opera, New York. He graduated from The Curtis Institute of Music in

Mark has performed with orchestras across the United States, including the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, National Symphony and Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He has also played the bassoon in several international music festivals.

He studied the piano and conducting at the Paris National Conservatoire. In 2004 he made his London debut at the Barbican conducting the English Chamber Orchestra. In 2010, he made his American debut conducting Carmen at Palm Beach Opera. Other orchestras he works with include the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, the Warsaw and Krakow Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Teatro National de Sao Carlos in Lisbon. He has conducted many operas in France and at several festivals. He was Associate Conductor of the Opera Comique. In 2000 he founded OstinatO, a chamber orchestra. They have performed in many or the most prestigious French festivals and Paris Theater.

A native of Chile, Josefina earned her music degree at Indiana University and performed with the Indiana Chamber Orchestra. She joined the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 1999 as their principal second violin and has since appeared as soloist with them. She participates in many festivals including Aspen, Tanglewood, Santa Fe, Schleswig-Holstein and Villa Musica in Germany. She toured Europe and Asia with Uri Caine’s Jazz Ensemble.

Alex will soon record her album on New Amsterdam label. Jennifer Danseuse T Dancer Née en 1989 à Thiais (94), Jennifer Visocchi, Coryphée, commence la danse à l’âge de 6 ans à Athis-Mons. Violinist Sandy Yamamoto has dazzled audiences in concert performances around the globe for the past three decades as a soloist and as a member of the Miró Quartet. Ms. Yamamoto has appeared with orchestras throughout the US and Europe to critical acclaim. With the Miró Quartet, she has performed on the major concert stages of the world, regularly concertizing in North America, South Ameri-ca, Europe and Asia. She was a recipient of the Naumburg Chamber Music and Cleveland Quartet Awards, won First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and was one of the first chamber musicians to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Owen Violoncelle T CelloDiplômé d’une licence et d’un master avec mention de l’université de Yale, Owen a été Violoncelle Principal du Symphonique de Yale et Soliste pour sa tournée européenne en 1986. Il a été membre des Symphoniques de New Haven et de Pittsburg, puis a rejoint le Symphonique de Boston en 1991.
