Pocos municipios cuentan con espacios naturales tan singulares como Jerez. Por un lado, el municipio dispone del para-je natural Montes de Propios, en pleno Parque Natural de Los Alcornocales, de gran valor botánico y ecológico. En este entorno el visitante puede disfrutar de varias rutas guiadas y pernoctar cómo-damente en plena naturaleza en el Cor-

tijo de Rojitán, uno de los pocos cortijos típicos de la zona que aún quedan en pie. Otro espacio natural privilegiado de Jerez es el Zoobotánico, interesante no sólo por su colección zoológica y botáni-ca, sino también por su función educa-dora y por su participación en importan-tes programas de conservación, como el del lince ibérico.

Few cities have such unique natu-ral spaces as Jerez. On such space is Montes de Propios, in the heart of the Alcornocales Nature Park, of great bo-tanical and ecological value. In this set-ting visitors can enjoy several guided routes and comfortably spend the night in full contact with nature at Cortijo de Rojitán, one of the few typical corti-

jo farmhouses still to be found in the region. Another exceptional natural space is the zoological and botanical gardens, interesting not only for its zo-ological and botanical collection, but also for its educational function and its participation in important conser-vation programmes such as that of the Iberian Lynx.

The city provides a varied calendar of hugely popular events featuring this noble animal. The most important are held in May, taking place around the Horse Fair, famous for its horse-car-riage parade and beautiful horses. Sev-eral different equestrian events of both national and international interest take place parallel to this festive event, as does the Equisur equestrian trade fair. Also of great relevance are the events celebrating European Horse Day in September. However, visitors may en-joy exhibitions organised the whole year round by both private and public enterprise, such as the Royal Andalu-sian School of the Equestrian Art.

The art of flamenco is part of the ge-netic code of a city that has seen some of its performers grow to achieve in-ternational importance and fame. For this reason it is not unusual to find flamenco present in each of the festive cycles of the city, in its neigh-bourhoods, in its flamenco peñas and in a special way to enjoy flamenco through song, dance and guitar. The Jerez Festival celebrates its twen-

tieth edition in a year in which the town council will promote the fact that tourists can find flamenco events programmed throughout the twelve months of the year.
