Philosophy after Pre-Socratics

Philosophy began in Greece because of available

leisure of time and Hellenic spirit of individualism

There are three (3) categories under Post-Socratic

Philosophy;

Epicureanism

Stoicism Skepticism

EPICUREANISM PHILOSOPHY

The Philosophy of Epicurus

EPICURUS

One of the most misinterpret philosophers in pantheon of great thinkers

His name and philosophy became synonymous with wanton hedonism

His philosophy combines a physics based on an atomistic materialism with

a rational hedonistic ethics that emphasizes moderation of desires andcultivation of friendships

Can teach us how to find happiness in any situation

Epicurus believed that desires could be divided into

the following categories;

Natural desires that are essential and mandatory for

survival (FOOD AND SHELTER)

Natural desires that you can live without sex

Narcissistic desire (Wealth and Fame) that should be

avoided

THE ROLE OF SENSES

Epicurus believed that everything we know, we get from

the senses alone and he thought the senses are trustworthy

STOICISM / STOICS PHILOSOPHY

Arose in the Hellenic period, the period afterthe conquests of Alexander the Great.

Philosophical preference of many Greeks and Non-Greeks

The beginnings is lie with Zeno of Citium

Defines a person who accepts lifes sling and arrows

without whining it.

Philosophy that can hold emotions like FEAR

The person who live the Stoic Ideal is called SAGE

Logical

Physical

Ethical

These three divisions of philosophy are interdependent,one cannot study without touching upon the others.

Diogenes explains that LOGIC is divided into system oftwo sciences;

RHETORIC, concerns invention of arguments, their

expression into words, their arrangement and deliver(SPEAKING OR WRITING)

DIALECTIC, concern formal logic, epistemology and theory

of language to use modern terminology. (ART OF

INVESTIGATING AND DISCUSSING THE TRUTH OFOPINIONS)

1.) FA (Law Principle)

The law code must be clearly written and made

ruler to make sure that others dont take over

control the state.

3.) SHI (Literally legitimacy, power or charisma)

It is the position of the ruler, not the
