This year we celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies. The next issue will include a piece taking stock of the Journal's first three decades of existence as a significant scholarly resource for LatinAmericanists and Caribbeanists in Canada and abroad. Anniversaries are useful in that they bring us to ponder on past accomplishments and current chal­lenges. 1 truly believe that we can look back with pride. Like many academie publications, we have had our share of di:fficulties over the years. However, the bottom line is that our Journal has established itself as a highly respected reference in our field. This is reflected in, among other things, a steady increase in the quantity and quality of submissions received from Canada, the United States, Latin America, and Europe. However, we cannot afford to be complacent. We face important challenges, such as the move into electronic publication and the dramatic changes on funding rules now being considered by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, which could affect negatively our Journal. These concems have already been ad­dressed by the CALACS Board, and several options are currently under discussion. In spi te of these challenges, we can and should be optimistic about our future prospects. The community of specialists on the Caribbean and Latin America in Canada is growing and be­coming better interconnected. Young scholars are particularly active

in CALACS conferences, universities are hiring new resources, and more linkages are being established across the country, sometimes even bridging the proverbiallinguistic divide. Our Journal's vitality is a testament to that collective thrust.

The issue you have in your hands reflects not only the top quality, but also the amazing diversity that has come to set our Journal apart. Our readers will find articles in English, Spanish, and French, written by scholars from Canada, the United States, Argentina, and Uruguay. They deal with Mexico's labour unions, political parties in Brazil and Uruguay, public health in Cuba, environment policy in Guyana, cultural identity in Puerto Rico, the peasant population in Argen tina, and testimonialliterature in Chile. Also published in this issue are 17 book reviews in three different languages. Let me point out that this diversity is not driven by "political correctness" but by the genuine expression of the variety of interests and perspectives that converge in the field of Latin American and Caribbean studies.

The picture on the cover shows a fragment of one of Sergio Ot­ero Miranda's ofrendas (altars to the dead). Otero Miranda's work with calacas (handmade skeleton figurines) builds on a fascina ting Mexican tradition. Religious and mythical symbols, everyday effects, and personal mementos are combined in a complex visual narrative. Emotion, humour, sorrow, and fright are part of the mix. The artist was recently in Canada to show his calacas and conduct workshops at the Canadian Museum of Civilization.

* * * Cette année, nous célébrons le trentième anniversaire de la Revue canadienne des études latina-américaines et caraïbes. Le prochain numéro contiendra un article qui fera le bilan de ses trois premières décennies d'existence comme ressource académique d'importance pour les spécialistes de 1 'Amérique latine et des Caraibes au Canada et à l'étranger. Les anniversaires sont utiles en ce qu'ils nous amè­nent à réfléchir sur les accomplissements passés, ainsi que sur les défis actuels. Je crois sincèrement que nous pouvons être fiers de nos réussites. Comme la plupart des publications scientifiques, nous avons traversé des moments difficiles au fil des ans. Cependant, l'essentiel est que notre Revue s'est affirmée en tant que référence hautement respecté dans notre domaine de recherche. Ceci se voit, entre autres, dans l'augmentation soutenue de la qualité et de la quantité de sou-

missions provenant du Canada, des États-Unis, de l'Amérique latine et de l'Europe. Nous ne pouvons pas être complaisants pour autant. Nous faisons face à des défis majeurs, tels que la mouvance vers la publication électronique et l'impact appréhendé des nouvelles rè­gles de financement à la publication académique que le Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada vise de mettre en place. Ces questions ont déjà fait l'objet de discussions au sein du Conseil d'administration de l' ACELAC et nous explorons diverses réponses possibles. Or, même devant ces défis de taille, nous avons droit à demeurer optimistes. La communauté de spécialistes de 1 'Amérique latine et des Caraibes ne cesse de grandir au Canada. Les jeunes cher­cheurs sont particulièrement actifs dans les congrès de 1 'ACELAC, les universités embauchent des nouvelles recrues et de plus en plus de liens se tissent à 1' échelle du pays, même au-delà des frontières linguistiques. La vitalité de notre Revue découle directement de cet élan collectif.

Le numéro que vous avez entre les mains reflète non seulement la haute qualité mais aussi la diversité incroyable qui caractérise notre Journal. Nos lecteurs trouveront des articles en anglais, en espagnol et en français, rédigés par des chercheurs du Canada, des États-Unis, de 1 'Argentine et de 1 'Uruguay. Ces articles portent sur les syndicats au Mexique, les partis politiques au Brésil et en Uruguay, la santé publique à Cuba, la politique environnementale à la Guyane, l'identité culturelle à Puerto Rico, la population paysanne en Argentine et la littérature de témoignage au Chili. Nous publions aussi dans ce numéro un total de 17 recensions en trois langues. Ceci ne relève aucunement d'une diversité « politiquement correcte ». C'est plutôt 1' expression de la pluralité d'intérêts et de perspectives qui convergent dans le champ des études latino-américaines et caraibes.

Cet artiste mexicain les construit avec des cal ac as (des figures squelettiques), combinant des symboles religieux et mythiques, des objets de la vie quotidienne et des souvenirs personnels dans un récit visuel fort complexe. Son travail, ancré dans la tradition populaire, mobilise 1' émotion, 1 'humour, la tristesse et la peur. M. Otero Miranda a ré­cemment effectué un séjour au Canada pour présenter ses calacas et pour animer des ateliers au Musée canadien des civilisations.
