HeLene BaiLLY gaLLerY specializes in modern and contemporary art, looking to confront the young, contemporary creation promoted by the gallery with its modern masters. its principal objective is the representation of an international group of artists, uniting within its walls diverse disciplines; painting, drawing, sculpture, video art, photography, and installations. The gallery’s program participates in varied projects, both in situ and in specialized and internationally recognized art shows.

The objective of the gallery is to make young international artists known to the french public, through the context of thematic, collective expositions as well as personal expositions. To achieve this objective, HeLene BaiLLY gaLLerY will collaborate with notably american, european, asian, and south african galleries, to expose both avant-garde and established artists, who until present have never exposed in France, or very little. The gallery will also have the pleasure of inviting curators of different backgrounds to contribute to this evolution and propagation of the world’s most recent artistic currents.

HeLene BaiLLY gaLLerY est spécialisée dans l’art moderne et contemporain. elle aime confronter la jeune création contemporaine qu’elle défend à ses maîtres. son objectif principal est la représentation d’un groupe international d’artistes alliant plusieurs disciplines comme la peinture, le dessin, la sculpture, la vidéo, la photographie et les installations. Le programme de la galerie participe à différents projets organisés in situ et dans des foires d’art spécialisées et reconnues sur la scène artistique.

L’objectif de la galerie est de faire connaitre de jeunes artistes internationaux au public français. La galerie présente des expositions thématiques collectives ainsi que des expositions personnelles. pour ce faire, HeLene BaiLLY gaLLerY collabore notamment avec des galeries américaines, européennes, asiatiques ou encore sud africaines pour montrer des artistes d’avant-garde et confirmés qui n’ont jusqu’à présent jamais ou peu exposés en France. La galerie a aussi la joie d’inviter des curateurs de différents horizons pour contribuer à l’évolution et à la propagation des derniers courants artistiques mondiaux.

PRESENTATION DE L’EXPOSITION

pour cette rentrée 2014, la galerie propose une exposition intitulée(de)construction, au sein de son espace dédié à l’art contemporain.

a cette occasion, nous présenterons les travaux de quatre artistes travaillant pour certains la déconstruction à travers la décomposition de l’oeuvre, et pour d’autres, le processus de construction avec la disposition et l’assemblage de matériaux ou différentes parties qui forment un tout.

Gabriel Pionkowski déconstruit ses toiles fil par fil pour les reconstruire en créant ainsi une œuvre qui interroge le support et fait naître un nouvel angle d’analyse de l’oeuvre.

Jae Ko, quant à elle, utilise du papier recyclé pour former des volumes colorés qui se construisent en se gonflant d’encres. Les formes et les structures de ses oeuvres sont des constructions uniques mêlant ainsi tradition et modernité.

Gilbert1, qui nomme certaines de ses œuvres « destruction », investit le sous-sol de la galerie à l’occasion de cette exposition. il travaille dans la rue et les lieux abandonnés comme en atelier ou en galerie. il s’exprime par des figures abstraites et destructurées, dans le courant de l’arte povera.

Dirk Vander Eecken, enfin, s’intéresse à la fragmentation de l’infiniment petit pour reconstruire son oeuvre couche par couche, laissant apparaître le processus de (de)construction, d’apparition et de disparition...

EXHIBITION PRESENTATION

To celebrate the return from the summer holidays, HeLene BaiLLY gaLLerY is proud to present a new exhibition, entitled (de)construction, in its location dedicated to Contemporary art.

We will present pieces from four different artists who either work on “deconstruction” through the artpiece’s breakdown or work on “construction“ through the gathering and the arrangement of materials and different parts that give form to a whole.

Gabriel Pionkowski breaksdown his canvases thread by thread and rebuilds them, thus creating a work that questions the frame and gives rise to a new point of view on art .

Jae Ko uses recycled paper to form colorful volumes inflated with ink. The forms and structures of her works are unique constructions that combine tradition and modernity.

Gilbert1, who calls some of his pieces “destruction”, takes possession of the basement of the gallery. The artist works in the streets and in abandonned spaces, as well as in his studio and galleries. He expresses himself through abstract and unstructured figures, distant heir to the arte povera.

Dirk Vander Eecken, focuses on the fragmentation of what’s extremely little to rebuild his work layer by layer, revealing the process of (de)construction, of appearance and disappearance...

BIOGRAPHIE

Jae Ko utilise des matériaux inhabituels mêlant papier pour imprimante et encres traditionnelles asiatiques. elle remodèle des kilomètres de papiers de bureau de la vie quotidienne en des formes harmonieuses puis les baigne dans l’encre et les laisse sécher pendant plusieurs mois. Ko explique : “Les bordures des papiers infiniment longs créent des dessins de lignes constitués de spirales, d’endroits plus ou moins serrés en fonction de comment je les enroule”. au fil du temps, le papier absorbe l’encre, s’allonge et se gonfle dans des formes organiques sculpturales guidées par la conception de l’artiste.son travail s’inscrit dans un espace entre l’écriture et la sculpture, cette forme biomorphique ressemble souvent à un signe calligraphique gonflé. Bien que Ko aime laisser libre interprétation à l’imaginaire du spectateur, elle reconnaït des références personnelles dans son geste. elle est notamment attirée par les formes asiatiques traditionnelles, les détails architecturaux comme les colonnes mais aussi l’intérieur des fleurs. Ces sources d’inspiration offrent à ses pièces un résultat alliant couleur, forme et texture avec une richesse d’émotions et d’allusions.

BIOGRAPHY

sculptor Jae Ko uses unusual materials: adding machine paper and traditional asian inks. Ko unwinds and reshapes miles of everyday office paper into more alluring forms, then bathes in vatsof ink and lets dry over months. Ko says, “The edges of infinitely long pieces of paper create line drawings which spiral, tighten, and loosen depending on how i roll them.” as the paper takes the ink and dries, it elongates and swells into organic sculptural forms guided by the artist’s design.Her seductive work occupies a space between writing and sculpting; this biomorphic form often looks like a swollen calligraphic mark. Though Ko leaves their interpretation to the viewer, she acknowledges personal references in their gestures. drawn to traditional asian family marks and architectural details such as the designs of columns, she also looks inside flowers for inspiration. The outcome, the color, form and texture with a wealth of emotions and allusions, is simply exquisite.

BIOGRAPHIE

Très peu exposé en europe, gabriel pionkowski est d’ores et déjà présent dans des salons et des galeries de premier plan tels que la galerie The Hole à new York et les salons nada (nY) et volta (Bâle).gabriel pionkowski considère la peinture comme l’interruption d’une présence inscrite, la construction d’une surface à travers une série d’absences. Hautement personnelle et pourtant extrêmement anonyme, la peinture se (dé)plie sur un sol mouvant à partir duquel nous partageons, adoptons et questionnons la notion d’identité. selon l’artiste, l’acte de peindre génère une surface qui est à la fois révélée et en retrait, invitant constamment à se tourner vers l’arrière de la toile dans un nœud de procédés (dé)génératifs.il construit ses tableaux à travers un rejet initial de la surface donnée : il déconstruit la toile et ainsi le plan de l’image, peint chaque fil à la main et reconstruit la toile sur un métier à tisser traditionnel. Ce processus de (re)présentation de la toile implique et révèle la faculté de questionner l’arrière de la surface, mais aussi la composition de la structure (châssis en bois, parois, agrafes, clous, câbles, etc et leur corollaire), comme dispositif pictural. de façon plus générale, les œuvres des dernières années ont été très influencées par le travail de giorgio Morandi, de Henri Matisse, et des expressionnistes abstraits tardifs tels que agnès Martin, et par le concept philosophico religieux de « voïd » dans le daoïsme. La question la plus brève qui a conduit tout son travail ces dernières années a été : « Comment peut-on ne rien peindre ? ».son travail le plus récent (2012-2014) revient à la peinture sur le plan établi. Ces signes séparent la surface latéralement, et grâce à différents degrés de pression, pénètrent la toile pour en marquer l’arrière. dans la volonté de rendre cet arrière visible, la toile est coupée, chaque bande est alors tournée à 180° sur un pli central puis tissée sur elle-même. Le résultat consiste en un tableau qui se tient dans un état précaire entre le sujet initial et celui qui, bien qu’établi en lui-même, est derrière ; entre certitude et incertitude, entre l’unisson et le chaos ; le temps dans l’espace d’un instant.

very little exposed in europe, yet already present in leading art fairs and galleries such as The Hole gallery nY, nada in new York and volta in Basel…gabriel pionkowski regards painting as an interruption of an inscribed presence, the construction of a surface through a series of absences. Highly personal, yet extremely anonymous, painting (un)folds into itself onto a sinking ground for which we share, assume, and question identity. For the artist, the act of painting generates a surface that is at once exposed and in withdrawal, constantly inviting turns toward backsides in a knot of (de)generative processes.He constructs his paintings through an initial refusal of a given surface: deconstructing canvas, and thus the picture plane, painting each thread by hand, and reconstructing the plane on a traditional hand-weaving loom. This process of (re)presenting the canvas implicates and reveals the possibility of questioning the backside of the surface as well various supporting systems (wooden stretchers, walls, staples, nails, wires, etc. and their corollary) as pictorial apparatuses. in a more general, conversational manner, the work of the last few years has been very influenced by the work of giorgio Morandi, Henri Matisse and late abstract expressionists, like agnes Martin, and the religious-philosophically the concept of the “void” in daoism. One of the most concise questions that has driven all of his works the last few years has been “how can one paint nothing?”.His newest work (2012-2014) focuses on painting back onto the constituted plane. These marks divide the surface laterally, and, due to various degrees of pressure, penetrate to mark the backside. in an attempt to make this backside visible the canvas is cut, each strip turned one hundred and eighty degrees around a central fold, and woven into itself. The result is a painting that holds itself in a precarious state between the initial subject and that which, although constituted as itself, is beyond; between certainty and uncertainty, unison and chaos, time within the instant.

dirk vander eecken travaille en étroite collaboration avec la microscopie électronique et le groupe de nanotechnologie du département de physique de l’université d’anvers. son approche expérimentale fournit un travail novateur sur la peinture, les arts graphiques et la science. il est diplômé en 2008, le premier doctorat en arts à l’université d’anvers. Cela s’est accompagné d’une magnifique exposition au Musée royal des Beaux-arts d’anvers.

Les grilles et les modèles que dirk vander eecken utilise indiquent toujours le nouveau, toujours plus d’abstraction dans ses peintures. Ces travaux contiennent des couches qui permettent des possibilités improbables. Ceux-ci se réfèrent au visible et à l’invisible. La structure optique est source de confusion parce que la grille reste visible, mais la profondeur atteint l’infini. Ces références expirent, juste une nouvelle image.

dirk vander eecken cooperates closely with the research group of electron microscope technology and nanotechnology of the department of physics at the university of antwerp. His experimental approach yields innovative work in which painting, graphics and science mutually influence each other. in 2008 he obtained the first doctorate in the Fine arts at the university of antwerp. This event went hand in hand with a splendid exhibition at the royal Museum of Fine arts of antwerp.

The grids and patterns used by dirk vander eecken, are constantly resulting in abstract, almost undefinable paintings. These works possess many layers, and therefore make way for unlikely possibilities. it is this quality in his paintings that refer to the visible and the invisible, to finity and infinity. The optic construction confuses, because the grids and patterns stay so dominantly visible, while the endless depth reaches to infinity. all references are meaningless, just a new (non)image remains.

gilbert1 est un touche à tout issu de la culture graffiti/street art, un plasticien qui travaille dans la rue et les lieux abandonnés comme en atelier.s’étant exercé longtemps à la calligraphie et typographie, il s’exprime désormais par des figures abstraites et destructurées qui représentent les traces d’une société décadente, utilisant différentes techniques comme la peinture, la sérigraphie, la sculpture, l’installation, la vidéo. il a développé un univers d’apparence chaotique, brut et authentique, dynamique et puissant, lié à une recherche de mouvement et de déformation de l’espace, qui symbolise une forme d’urgence.récemment il a réalisé un film en stop motion et un musée à ciel ouvert de 1200m2 dans un lieu abandonné.

gilbert1 is a real dabbler coming from graffiti/street art culture, a visual artist working in the streets and in the abandoned places as much as in his studio.Having devoted himself to calligraphy and typography for a long time, he now expresses himself through abstract and unstructured figures which represents tracks of a decadent society, using different techniques such as painting, screenprint, sculpture, installation, vidéo. He has developed an apparently chaotic universe, raw and authentic, dynamic and powerful, related to a search for movement, and some deformation of space, which symbolizes a kind of emergency.recently he has realized a stop motion film and an open air museum on 13000 square feet in a lost place.

gilbert1 was born in 1980. He lives and works in nancy (Fr). He has painted and/or exhibited in paris, Lyon, st etienne, Marseille, epinal, nancy, Metz, stuttgart, roma, Barcelona, new York, san Jose, Los angeles.
