at the heart of Canadas Technology

Triangle, has become one of Canadasleading comprehensive universities

with 28,000 full- and part-timestudents in undergraduate and

    graduate programs.

For 17 years in a row, the university hasbeen named Canadas most innovative

university in the Macleans annualuniversity rankings, and has topped the

reputational categories of Best Overall,Most Innovative, and most likely to

    largest post-secondary co-operativeeducation program, embraces

its connections to the world andencourages enterprising partnerships

    in learning, research and discovery.

Faculty ofMathematicsThe University of Waterloos Facultyof Mathematics has the largest

concentration of mathematical andcomputer science talent in the world.

Perhaps the best testimonyto Waterloos standing and

exceptional reputation is thequality and many achievements

of the facultys teachers, researchers, alumni and students

    With more than 5,300 students,

200 full-time professors, and 180courses in mathematics, statistics

and computer science, the facultyis a powerhouse of discovery and

    innovation.

The University of Waterloo is hometo the largest co-op education

system in the world. They have3,500 employers worldwide hiring

their students for employmentdirectly related to their field of

study. Faculty of Mathematicsstudents earn on average betweenCAD52,000 and CAD83,000 during

    possible six co-op work terms.

Most programs in WaterloosFaculty of Mathematics are offere

in both the co-op and regularsystems of study. Academically,

co-op and regular are thesamethat is, students from

    both systems take their courses

together and follow the sameacademic programs. The only

difference is that co-op studentstake a break from their studies

every four months to go onfour-month work terms, in jobs

located primarily in Ontario, witha smaller selection found across

    Canada and abroad.

Admission to co-op is consideredon a case-by-case basis using

official transcripts and informationprovided in the Admission

    ACTUARIALSCIENCEUNIVERSITY OFWATERLOO, ONTARIOCANADA

ActuarialScienceActuaries are in demand the world

    over. In the modern economic

climate, with new risks and the need

for ever-more creative ways to deal

    with them, there are constant

    opportunities for actuaries. Actuarial

science is a relatively new major that

could be considered a blend of

    business and applied mathematics.

Students learn to use statistics and

    computer analysis to predict

    outcomes and minimize financial

    risk. Closely related careers also

available to those with this degree are

    financial analysis and investment

    management.

Actuary students should be good in

    math, computers, and economics.

    They must be ambitious, independent

    and rational thinkers who can

    communicate well.
