À l’affiche / What’s On In La Roche Canillac and Around OCTOBER 2019 NO. 85 CHÂTEAU DE BITY, SARRAN The home of Jacques et BernadeIe Chirac since 1969 The château burnt down in 1579 and was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th Century. The main rectangular building is flanked by a square watch tower with corbelling on each side. Two 18th Century pavillons stand on either side of the terrasse which then leads to the gardens. JACQUES CHIRAC (1932-2019) Although Jacques Chirac was born in Paris his family roots were very much in Corrèze (his ancestors were small farmers from Gros-Chastang) and this is why he chose Corrèze as the place to start his poliLcal career. He was elected Conseiller Municipal in Sainte-Féréole near Brive in 1965, was Député de la Corrèze from 1967 to 1995, Conseiller Général of the Meymac Canton in 1968 and Président du Conseil Général de la Corrèze from 1970 to 1979. At the same Lme he was elected Mayor of Paris from 1977 to 1995 and held the highest funcLons in the FiVh Republic: he was several Lmes a minister, then Prime Minister and finally President of France - a post he held for 12 years. Despite his many responsibiliLes, Jacques Chirac remained extremely close to Corrèze and the Corréziens. Under his leadership the département experienced strong economic growth. He contributed to many business, cultural and social iniLaLves throughout Corrèze - in parLcular through the FoundaLon which today bears his name. True to his roots, Jacques Chirac never failed to support the agriculture of Corrèze and to promote its products in France and throughout the world. In order for people to pay their respects to President Chirac, books of condolence will be available at the Hôtel du Département Marbot in Tulle and at the Musée du Président Jacques Chirac in Sarran. ICI C’EST LA CORRÈZE “Marque iden‘taire qui vous fera aimer et découvrir la Corrèze” (A trademark which will make you love and discover Corrèze) The specialty of this small business is clothes, bags and mugs bearing the image of Jacques Chirac and, since his death was announced, clients have flocked to the shop. “We feel like we have lost a family member. He was the Eiffel Tower of Corrèze, our very own Kennedy” said business manager Pierre Blanc in an interview with La Montagne. Selling products with the image of the president has not offended the Chirac family; in fact, quite the opposite as Bernadeee Chirac " was photographed wearing the first tee-shirt for the magazine Paris Match and channels Canal+, TF1... ", remembers Pierre Blanc who donates 50 cents of each sale to the Jacques Chirac FoundaLon. The starLng point of the project was a small house and a barn in the middle of a field and the use of local materials - granite, slate, oak and chestnut woods - together with industrial materials (glass, metal…) allows for a perfect integraLon of the museum with its environment. The buildings overlook a small valley which was re-modelled by the landscape architect Michel Desvigne. He told us that “Corrèze is present everywhere” and chaeed for a while about La Roche Canillac and Brive. He was kind enough to autograph this sketch. MUSÉE DU QUAI BRANLY - JACQUES CHIRAC (In honour of the late President the Museum will be free of charge un‘l 11 October) The Quai Branly Museum - or museum of African, Asian, Oceanian and American art and civilisaLon (non-European civilisaLons) was the brainchild of Jacques Chirac and was designed by the architect Jean Nouvel. On 21 June 2016, 10 years aVer it opened, the museum was renamed in honour of President Chirac. Its emblem is a Chupicuaro statue (see above photo, taken on the day the museum was inaugurated).
