In the middle of Norway Close to the arctic circle Lower Røssåga, 250 MW 1950 GWh/year, 6 Francis units Upper Røssåga, 160 MW 950 GWh/year, 3 Francis units
Basic Characteristics
Average operation Lower Røssåga of 7.300h / year
Design flow Upper Røssåga larger than design flow
Lower Røssåga
Narrow tunnels / high head losses in waterways
Equipment partly worn out
Some ageing Civil constructions
Increased precipitations > 10 %

Refurbishment alternatives
Improved efficiency:
Improvements in waterways and turbines are main contributers.
Electrical equipments are marginal contributers, but will normally also have to
be considered due to age and increased turbine output.
Alternatives for Lower Røssåga:
1. Enlarging cross sections of tunnels and increasing capacity of old units in
existing Power Plant (+10 %)
2. Refurbish all units in existing Power Plant without capacity increase
3. Refurbish 3 units in existing Power Plant and construction of a new
Power Plant with capacity increase about 100 MW (+40 %)
