Case SummaryFrom this report we can learn about two major lab lessons. They are listed as under.
1. How to view information about a computers components from System DeviceManager.
2. Viewing the back panel of a computer and identifying the different ports foundthere. We can also see how it is connected to its respective device.
These two lesson lab is very important for every computer user to know and understand.
Computer is one of the most widely used devices and we should know the very basics of
using a computer. The first lesson lab teaches us how to view any required information
about a computers hardware from inside the computer. The second lesson lab on the
other hand guides us through the various ports at the back panel of a CPU.
Both the lesson labs are very essential for us to know for everyday use of computer.

The basic standard portsThe back panel of the computer consists of various ports through which external devices
such as printer, keyboard, scanner, modem etc. are connected. This allows instructions
and data to flow between the computer and the device. The computer ports are commonly
referred to as Input/Output ports (I/O ports). Most of the ports are polarized, permitting
the cable to be plugged in only in the correct direction.
The basic standard ports that are very commonly used among desktop users are given asfollows:
1. AC Adapter- This three pronged plug looks like a recessed power plug. It connects
to the ocmputer power cable that plug into a power bar or wall socket.
2. PS/2 orMouse and Keyboard portsThese ports accept the keyboard and mouse
plugs. The ports are located at the top of the back panel. The connecters are color-coded.Usually the purple connector is for the keyboard and the green connector is for the
mouse. In order to connect the mouse and keyboards, the color of the cable should match
the connector or else the computer will not boot properly. The mouse and keyboard use
PS2 connectors. The PS2 connectors were invented by IBM for their model PS2
computers.
3. USB ports The back-panel of the computer consists two USB ports, that accept
plugs of a wide range of devices such as keyboards, mouse, portable media players ,disk
drives etc. It has become a common place on other devices such as smart phones ,PDAs
and video game consoles.USB ports are generalised into three different criteria naming-
USB v1.00,USB v2.00 and USB v3.00, of which USB v3.00 is the fast data transactor.

4. Audio portsGenerally the back panel of the computer consists of three audio ports.
The three basic ports provided by all motherboards with integrated sound are the micro
phone, line in and line out ports. These ports are compatible with audio devices using the
3.5mm audio jack common to most desktop speakers and headphones. The microphone
port is designed to accept input from microphones using 3.5mm audio port. On most
computers the port is colour coded pink. The line in port is designed to accept audio input
from devices other than the microphone, it can be used to connect stereo system. It is
color coded yellow. The line out port is commonly used for desktop speakers or
headphones but is compatible with any device using the appropriate audio connector. The
port is generally color coded green.
5. Network port - It is the actual location where a network cable is plugged in. Network
ports provide users to access to local networks and the Internet.
6. Modem ports - A modem port is used to connect a computer to the internet using
standard telephone service. A modem port is similar to a regular telephone jack. Theconnection is made by inserting a standard telephone line into the modem port. The port
uses a telephone line, when connected; the line will not be used for any other calls while
connected.
7. Parallel port - The parallel port is used to connect older printers. The parallel port
allows for a one-way transmission of data from the source to a secondary device, such as
printer. The parallel port is found on the back of IBM compatible computers and is a 25-
pin (type-DB-25).The DB-25 has an 8 bit data bus. The standard parallel interface for
external devices can transfer 8bits at a given period of time.

8. Serial ports - A DE-9 connector is used for a serial port. Serial port is a serial
communication physical interface through which information is transferred in or out one
bit at a time (in contrast to parallel ports).Serial ports are mainly used to connect external
modems.
9. Monitor/VGA port - Either imbued graphics card of the motherboard or extended
graphics card contains display ports. Display ports have developed to give more vivid
quality of pictures. This ports are subdivided into 3 main criteria 1.VGA adapter 2.DVI
adapter 3.HDMI adapter.
Expansion Ports
When a more efficient and powerful PC is needed it needs some specialized ports to
enhance its compatability with other devices. These ports sits on the empty spaces of the
back-panel of a CPU.
1. Extended Graphics Cards Port
2. Extended Audio CardsPort
3. MIDI Ports
4. Gaming Port5. SCSIPort
6. TV cards Port

1. Extended Graphics Cards Port - A graphics card is an expansion card which
generates output visuality of a computer and these family of expansion cards are situated
in the motherboards expansion slots. They offer the traditional VGA adapter(A type
ofD-sub connector standard on most video cards) along with new DVI-ports or HDMI-
ports, through which a display adapter is connected.
2. Extended Audio Cards Port- Audio or Sound cards is an internal addition of a
CPU.This device faciliates the input and output of analogue sound to digital sound or
vice-versa through comptuer programs. Sound cards are generally found on PCI slots. The
ports of an internal sound card are color coded and they use 3.5mm audio-jack.
Green- for audio output to external soundsystem
Pink-An input port for microphone
Blue- It recieves analog sound data off other connected devices
Black- An output to surround system
Orange-Analog line level audio output for center channel speaker and subwoofer
3. MIDI Ports-MIDI short forMusical Instrument Digital Interface, is an electronic
musical instrument industry specification that enables a wide variety of digital musical
instruments, computers and other related devices to connect and communicate with one
another.A DA-15 male connector is needed to setup the connection onto the computer.
4. Gaming Port- IBM PC first introduced the concept of game ports. Old generation
PCs were able to connect joystick for the purpose of better gaming experience.Game
ports were initially located on specialized expansion slot of the motherboard but later
with the advancement of technology USB replaced Game Ports.

5. SCSI Port - Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) is a set of standards for
physically connecting and transferring data between computers and peripheral devices.
The SCSI standards define commands, protocols, and electrical and optical interfaces.
SCSI is most commonly used for hard disks and tape drives, but it can connect a wide
range of other devices, including scanners and CD drives, although not all controllers can
handle all devices. Later SCSI ports were superseded by USB ports.
6. TV cards Port-A TV card is a kind of television tuner which is found on PCI slots.
A TV card enables the computer to recieve TV signals. Moreover, it can function as video
capture card which allows it to record TV programs onto the hard disk.Monitors are
connected to it by mini-Din or RCA connectors.

Recommendations
1. System Device Manager is reached in different ways depending on the version ofwindows.
2. Never change anything from the properties of the System Device Manager.3. For the PS/2 ports the mouse and keyboard must be connected in the green and
violet port respectively otherwise the computer will not boot properly.
4. The connectors that have pins must be connected to their respective ports in theright method or else the pins might break and the connector can no more be used.
5. For the audio ports the green, pink and yellow/blue jack should be connected withthe respective colored ports for proper functioning of the ports and the devices.
6. Network ports and Modem ports should be connected properly for access to anetwork or the internet.
7. When we need a powerful computer we add different adapters on the expansionslots of the motherboard. We add extended audio adapter, display adapter etc to
increase the performance of our computer.8. Gaming port andSmall Computer System Interface (SCSI) port is now replaced
by USB ports.

Conclusion
Computer is a very essential thing in our life. During the past 10 years, the use of
computers in education has increased dramatically and a wide range of educational
computer programmes are now widely available for individual and classroom use. Yet we
do not know many of the things related to the computer. So the motive of this report is to
teach us the very basics of the ports at the back panel of a CPU and how to view required
information about different components of a computer.
Initially, we saw how to view different components of a computer. We viewed and
gathered information about a computers components from System Device Manager.
Seeing the properties we could identify if the device is working properly or not.
Finally, we saw the basic ports that can be found at the back panel of a CPU. Then we
saw the extended ports which makes the computer more efficient and powerful. The basic
ports were AC adapter, PS/2 or Keyboard and mouse Port, USB Ports, Audio Ports,Network Port, Modem Port, Serial Port, Parallel Port and Monitor/VGA Port. The
expansion ports were Extended Graphics Cards Port, Extended Audio CardsPort, MIDI
Ports, Gaming Port, SCSI Port and TV cards Port.
We thank Almighty ALLAH for giving us the patience to write this report and submit it
on time successfully. We thank our course instructor Mohammad Monzur Morshed
Bhuiya for guiding us through and bestowing us with enriched knowledge and
information throughout the semester.
