pays, si on veut!)

“Houston, we have a problem!”
“Stiff uppah lip, old chap!!”
“O! say can you see!”
I pledge allegiance to the United States of America?
Factor #2:Trouble with TradeBritish North America had special trading privileges
with Britain - wheat and flour from the colonies could enter Britain with a very low tax while the Americans had to pay a higher tax
It would be like if the grade 6s got pizza for a lower price than the grade 8s just because Mr. Budwal liked the 6s better! Not cool!
In 1846, Britain announced that it was putting an end to the trade preference and there would be free tradeBritain would allow goods from any country into its
markets without a taxBNA was in trouble! We would have to find a new
trading partner, and the most obvious choice for partnership was the United States of America
Reciprocity (agreement to allow trade of certain goods)In 1854 (before the Civil
War), BNA signed an agreement with the United States that allowed goods to enter the US without tariffs (taxes)
We sent: fish, timber, grain, and cattle to them
They sent : coal and pork to us
Things are looking up!
Problem: the US felt they were losing money by allowing BNA goods into their country tax free – “Show me the money!”
Problem: Americans are growing hostile toward the colonies (oh, the Civil War is over now)
The only solution seemed to be free trade among the colonies themselves
If the colonies were united, it would be easy and logical for them to trade with one another!
...but not for long.
Confederation
We must unite!!
Fenian soldier's songWe are the Fenian
Brotherhood, skilled in the arts of war,
And we're going to fight for Ireland, the land we adore,
Many battles we have won, along with the boys in blue,
And we'll go and capture Canada, for we've nothing else to do.
Sir John, notre sauveteur!
Factor 4: The Railroad
If there was going to be trade amongst the colonies, there had to be a railway
The US had 14,484 km of rail while Canada only had 106 km (Yikes!)
Between 1850-1867, 3570 km of track were added to the colonies
Grand Trunk Railway – linked Canada West to the Atlantic Ocean in Halifax
Essential for trade and defence!A railway linking ALL colonies, was another
reason for Confederation
Choo, choo!
Confederation
We must unite!!
Factor 5: Changing British Attitudes The Free Trade policy was a
crushing blow to the economy of the colonies
To raise money for canals and roads, Canadians decided to tax all goods coming into the colonies
British manufacturers were furious! These taxes would raise the cost of British goods in the colonies
As such, support for the colonies was weakened in Britain – people began to see the colonies as a burden to Britain (we’re a pain in the neck!)
Confederation
We must unite!!
