PICKS OF HE WEEKRio (PG) -- Blu (voiced by
Jesse Eisenberg) is a rare ma-caw -- thought to be the last ohis kind -- living the good lieas a pet in Minnesota. When itsdiscovered that there is anothermember o his species in Brazil,Blu is taken on a trip to meet
his emale counterpart (voicedby Anne Hathaway.) What ol-lows is a ormulaic animatedadventure o madcap talkingcritters eeing bumbling ani-mal smugglers.
Te vibrant colors, wild(yet orgettable) music andsheer volume give Rio some-thing to appreciate. While italls short o charming, theressomething to be said or Rioas a spectacle -- a sort o daz-zling Carnivl or the rugrats.
Te Perect Host (R) -- Da- vid Hyde Pierce (Niles romFrasier) stars in this conus-
ing-yet-admirable jumble oneuroses, thrills and unsettlinghumor. A criminal on the run(Clayne Craword) lies his wayinto the home o Pierces un-suspecting urbane gentleman, who is preparing or his big
dinner party. A game o preda-tor and prey ensues, in whichew things are what they seem.
Its dark comedy with noteso Hitchcock and a heapingpile o role reversals, twists andmind games. While plenty olaughs and chills are containedwithin, some audience mem-bers may suer rom cripplingplot-twist atigue by the end othe lm.
In a Better World (R) --Tis Danish oreign-languagedrama explores gripping is-sues in justice, civility, grie andparenthood. Anton is a doc-tor torn between two worlds:
his amily lie in the suburbso Denmark, and his work asa doctor in a war-torn cornero Arica. Te characters mustnavigate unclear moral land-scapes in the parallel worlds oschoolyard bullies and brutalwarlords. Te story is well-craed, perhaps too tidy attimes, but the conicts aced bythe characters are not so tidy, and the story has enough gravi-
tas to turn down easy answers.Coen Brothers Collection
(Blood Simple/Fargo/MillersCrossing/Raising Arizona)[Blu-ray] -- Ever want to gorgeyoursel on brainy thrillers withchunks o absurdist humor? Asa writing/directing team, theCoen brothers are the purvey-ors o ne lms with smartdialog, complicated characters, oddball humor and respected
visual prowess. Tis collectiono our o their earliest mov-ies includes some o the nestperormances by the stars in-
volved, including Frances Mc-Dormand.
