There truly are stars in Cannes. Make no mistake: real stars. Works of star-studded mastery amidst the chit-chat and gilded fakery. I left Cannes with the incandescent glow that emanated from one of these: Holy
Motors, by Leos Carax; a multi-layered work to which Denis Lavant dedicated his vast talent. Holy Motors is a collection of a thousand lives and a thousand fi lms: a blend of the razzle-dazzle glamour disgorged by the original, now corrupt Hollywood set (Oscars, limousines, iconic fi gures committed to themselves personifi ed by Eva Mendes) and the loving references to certain silver screen legends (Feuillade, Renoir, Buñuel, Kubrick or even Godard and Hitchcock in the form of Kylie Minogue, guided by the shadow of Demy). The fi lm begins by presenting the self-portrait of a designer in a locked room. He has to break through a wall by tearing down wallpaper printed tree designs – could that be the famous holly wood itself? – in order to create something new, and take us with him inside a labyrinth which is both found in our souls desperate for incarnation, our uncertain existences, and in art, in cinema, whose legitimacy and scope Carax calls into question.Harsh lighting illuminates and darkens the mingling of mythology which runs through the veins of the fi lm, and in which the fi gures of Orpheus and Eurydice, Hephaestus the ugly, lame god united with the most beautiful goddess, Aphrodite-Mendes, who metamorphoses into the Virgin Mary during a Dionysiac Pietà, fuse with the ghostly crowds – downgraded extras – as they move along the banks of our modern-day Styx, wide drains carrying away the waste of a world that we have defi led. The whole fi lm tingles with grandiose, poignant poetry, like the poetry that punctuates our lives, these lives which are never as beautiful as when they are slipping through our fi ngers, and that the cinema fi nds a way of transposing, despite the sceptical doubts expressed by Carax, all the while reinventing the seventh art itself.* Writer and fi lmmaker.

L’an dernier, je me suis enfi n décidée.
1 You each manage a restaurant in Paris: Thiou and Marius et Janette. Why did you decide to partner with Plage Orange? Thiou: I have known Albane since the days of the Bains Douches.
She has been off ering me this opportunity for years, but I never had
the right team. Last year, I fi nally decided to do it. The idea behind
working with Bruno was to off er our customers a more varied menu.
Bruno Brangea: We belong to the Richard group; the partnership
was formed naturally and easily. It meant that we could feature a Thai
menu by Thiou, and variations on fi sh, which is our speciality.
2 How do you organise your kitchen team? B. B.: There are ten of us in total, we each work on our own menu,
but we all help each other as well. There is a really great atmosphere
and real team camaraderie. Even though the French dishes are
served more often than the Thai, the Thai chefs help out the French.
3 Do you have an anecdote from the Festival? Thiou: Diane Kruger has been a regular at Thiou for many years,
and she adores the pad thai (stir-fried rice noodles). Unfortunately,
I didn’t include it on the menu, because it is too complex to cook on
the beach. Last week, I cooked one especially for her. She and her
fi ancé were delighted to taste their favourite dish overlooking the sea. INTERVIEW BY NORA SAHLI

It’s the fi nal screening. No more fi ghting to get
in, everyone is tired. In the cinema, we half-
heartedly look for seats. “Is this one taken?” Our
interlocutor simply blinks a reply, exhausted.
We decide to fi nd the nearest fold-up seat and
give up looking for the best spot. During the fi lm,
green lines appear on the screen. Everyone
thinks it’s deliberate (this is Cannes, after all), until
we realise there’s a fault. People whistle. It takes
fi ve minutes for the projectionist to react. He
too is half-asleep in his cabin, at the end of his
tether. At last, the show rolls on. C.M.
You have to love fi lm without prejudice, as
Thierry Frémaux has done as the Festival’s
director since 2001. Selective yet universal in
his programming, he has made Cannes home
to a decidedly democratic art form. You can love
the fi lms of Haneke and Nakache-Toledano – an
unbearable provocation for the Robespierres
among the critics – but that is what has kept it
going for so long. His decision to screen the
last fi lm by Claude Miller to close the Festival is
part of this approach. Who better represents
the crossover spirit than this great and popular
fi lm-maker? Having grown up in the shadow of
Godard and Truff aut, it was being forced to work
with Michel Audiard (scorned and ridiculed
by the New Wave) that led him to make one of
his biggest fi lms, in the early 80s: Garde à Vue.
His Thérèse Desqueyroux conjures up a kind of
delicate sadness. “Being ill has undoubtedly
created a bit of melancholy,” he said calmly, just
before his death. “It has given me a sort of
freedom: I was less obsessive and anxious
than usual because – listen closely – something
was happening to me that was more serious
than a fi lm. That’s the truth.”

The initial cast list is unbeatable: Tim Burton as President of the jury, and Kristin Scott Thomas as master of ceremonies. And there are several old-timers in the competition. Some British (Ken Loach, Mike Leigh), a Mexican (Alejandro González Iñárritu), a Russian (Nikita Mikhalkov) and Xavier Beauvois and Bertrand Tavernier fl ying the fl ag for France. But some bad news dampened the mood in the cinema world as it came to its annual gathering: the fi lmmaker Jafar Panahi had been sentenced and imprisoned in Iran. The Festival manager duo Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux decided to mark the occasion by inviting the director of The White Balloon to sit on the jury. In his place, during the opening event, his chair was left empty.
In 2010, Cannes was more than ever the place where cinema can be used to “fi nd out about the world”, in the words of Thierry Frémaux. A place where the desire to travel or share ideas is born, and where thoughts are shared; a place where history can be rewritten (Outside
the Law by Rachid Bouchareb about the Algerian war), or refl ections made on the fi nancial crisis (Wall
Street 2, by Oliver Stone) or the tragedy of illegal immigrants (Biutiful with Javier Bardem). But it is also a place where extravagance and a good sense of humour have a role to play, like Mathieu Amalric and the learned assembly of American strippers he directed in On Tour. On the red carpet, they exuded natural beauty in all its shapely glory when they improvised an undeniably audacious show. Amalric left with the Best Director prize. C.G.

For Jeanne, the memory of la Croisette has never faded. She met François Truff aut in Cannes in 1958, and the magical recipe for Jules and
Jim was set in motion. It was in Cannes again, two years later, that she won the award for Best Actress for Moderator cantabile by Peter Brook. As an actress, director and singer, Jeanne Moreau is the only person to have presided over the jury twice, in 1975 and 1995, as well as often playing the role of master of ceremonies. An eternal star, and the most glamorous Whirlwind in Cannes!

“MORETTI HAS CERTAINLY SEEN SOME UNUSUAL FILMS”
Thierry FRÉMAUX“MORETTI A BIEN VU
PROPOS RECUEILLIS PAR AURÉLIE GARCIA
Gala: We’ve seen many fi lms with similar
artistic values, but undoubtedly fewer that
stand out formally, in comparison with last year.
Thierry Frémaux: I warned that we didn’t have true one-off s like last year, which was dominated by The Artist and The Tree of Life. Films from around the world have shown great similarities in this selection.Gala: The Americans were back with a
vengeance. But they all promoted this vision
of a very violent America.
TF: Violence has always been a key ingredient in American cinema. It’s something that defi nitely needs questioning.Gala: The balance between “art” and “glamour”
has been respected again at Cannes.
TF: This balance is fundamental. We had some fi ne displays on the red carpet, every evening, and we had some great directors.Gala: What was the atmosphere
among the jury?
TF: Visibly very good, judging from the fun being had by everyone at the pétanque match. But I didn’t listen in on their discussions as they are strictly confi dential, even to me! Those are the rules.Gala: What kind of president was
Nanni Moretti?
TF: I know him, and he was himself. As a president, I think the jury was very happy with him.
Gala: Has he seen the type of original
fi lm he’d hoped to see?
TF: I’ll know when I talk about it with him, but now that everyone has seen the fi lms by Carax, Reygadas, Losnitza and Cronenberg, you’d imagine he has seen some unusual things.Gala: This year, how have you managed
to keep going and always retain your
composure?
TF: Five or six hours of sleep, and the permanent feeling of being privileged to do this job.Gala: Will the appointment in Venice of one of
your friends improve and normalise relations
with Venice?
TF: The world needs the Venice Festival, and I’m delighted that Alberto has now found his rightful place there, which had been taken away from him.Gala: What is the highest compliment you’ve
received this year that has done justice to your
work?
TF: Tim Roth, president of Un Certain Regard, said: “Sometimes it feels like I’ve been working 30 years to get to Cannes, and when I see all those fi lms it makes me want to start all over again!”

“I REALLY ENJOYED REMEMBERING MY FIRST LOVE”
Matthew McCONAUGHEY “J’AI ADORÉ ME REMÉMORER
M. McC. : J’ai adoré me remémorer ma première fois.
Gala: How did you prepare for this very physical role? Matthew McConaughey: Obviously, I had to train to get into shape. Tye (Sheridan) andI come from Texas, so we know those rural areas well, around the water and rivers (the fi lm was shot on a small island in the Mississippi Delta). It felt like I was going back in time, returning to my childhood.Gala: Did the fi lm remind you of your fi rst loves? MMcC: I really enjoyed remembering myfi rst love. The moment you fall in love, you’re so young, it’s intense and at the same time it’s harsh. You have no experience of love, it’s irrational, limitless. Mud has his head in the clouds, he lives in an imaginary world. If he had to become practical or reasonable, he’d come back down to earth and die of a broken heart. He’s a good example of love without bounds. A man who doesn’t want to refl ect, but continues to believe in love.
Gala: Were you impressed by the performance of your young co-star, 15 year-old Tye Sheridan?MMcC: We come from the same area in Texas and we realised that we have a lot in common. For the purposes of our roles, we had to camp out, go fi shing... It created a bond. We laughed a lot together during fi lming, and I can now say that this young man has become my friend.Gala: This was your fi rst time working with Jeff Nichols as a director? MMcC: It was so great working with him. Although he’s just 33, he’s already very professional. There are older directors out there who don’t understand all the requirements of the job with such great talent. He has a real vision of the fi lm as a whole. He wrote the screenplay, kept within the budget and timeframe, and above all showed a great deal of respect to everyone he worked with, without exception. He’s got so much talent.

Every year, on the evening of the Festival’s closing day, the Palme D’Or is the true star! A veritable jewel designed by Caroline Scheufele, handmade in Geneva in the Chopard workshops, the object of every desire, this gleaming golden palm frond honours the best fi lm in competition. As two Mini-Palmes also recognise the best actor and actress each year, the Palme d’Or, without a doubt, enjoys the best cast in the history of moviemaking.

Finally, some innocence and colour
come to this largely dark, grey Festival.
Mud takes us back to adolescence,
evoking memories of Rob Reiner’s
Stand by Me and A Perfect World by Clint
Eastwood. So, what’s it about?
Ellis and Neckbone, two kids from
Mississippi, meet Mud (Matthew
McConaughey), a fugitive who has sought
refuge on a small island. The pair are
fascinated by this strange, tattooed,
armed, talkative man who is obsessed
by love. They help him build a boat
to escape the men tracking him down.
Discovered last year in Critics’ Week
with Take Shelter, Jeff Nichols is in the
offi cial competition this year with
a feature that is part detective story,
part tender tale of childhood. Screened
on the penultimate day of competition,
this fi lm could cause a real stir. K.A.
Katia Alibert

Money can’t buy you happiness!
Freed from the shackles of his
remake of The Housemaid,
presented at Cannes in 2010, the
South Korean director hammers
the nail home... right home. In his
trademark glacial – but sublime
– style, he portrays the ridiculously
wealthy and brilliantly neurotic
Baek family, dominated by a
control freak of a wife (the
impeccable Youn Yuh-jung)
who will do absolutely anything
to save face. Redemption comes
in the form of Joo Young-Ka,
played by Kim Kang-woo as the
personal assistant. Filmed almost
entirely inside a mind-boggling
house built for the fi lm, Im
Sang-soo portrays caricatures
who are extreme to the point of
ridicule. “They are grotesque, but
also quite eccentric. I wanted
them to be likeable, despite
everything,” the director told the
press conference. In his latest
feature, the South Korean takes an
unfl inching look at corruption. “It
is not just limited to South Korea.
Although colonisation is over
from a territorial point of view, it
still exists from an economic point
of view. (…). Today, I’m keen to
point the fi nger not only at
Korean society, but also at
Europeans.” We’d better take heed.

L’ivresse de l’argent***SEXE, CORRUPTION ET ESTHÉTISME
SEX, SCANDAL AND AESTHETICS
» A bon entendeur. Virginie Picat

The Cannes Festival is paying
tribute to the director, who died
on April 4 of this year, by
screening his last fi lm, an
adaptation of François Mauriac’s
novel published in 1967. Thérèse
Desqueyroux portrays the
despair of a woman forced
into an arranged marriage
(in the Landes region, marriages
were arranged to combine
ownership of the forests).
Bereft of opportunities, she
feels imprisoned in her stifl ing
existence. Partly by chance,
partly out of spite, she tries
to poison her husband – and
shake up her repressed life with
all its conventions... Her cold
indiff erence to her actions are
shocking and troubling. But
who is more inhuman: Thérèse
or the husband who imprisons
her to save his family’s honour?
A classic drama, this fi lm
denounces the petty mentality
of the provincial bourgeoisie,
where emotions are hidden
away and only appearances
matter. K.A.

Nicole Kidman,
Matthew McConaughey, Sophie Marceau, Zac Efron, Kylie Minogue,

BEST OFAU THE CLUB BY ALBANE
acteurs, actrices, agents, producteurs…),
Happy birthday ! N. S.
During this sixty-fifth edition of the festival,
Albane Cleret celebrated her ten-year anniversary
of Cannes success. Each evening, everyone in the
business, whether French (actors, actresses,
agents, producers, etc.), or American (Harvey
Weinstein, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart,
etc.), as well as the brands on la Croisette, met
up at the Club, and followed the elegant, glamorous
dress code. Each evening, the two dance fl oors – one
indoor and one on the terrace – were on fi re.

LUDIVINE
SAGNIER, CHRISTA THE
And the palm for the most available actor goes to... PETE DOHERTY. The bad boy of English rock went all out to publicise the fi lm Confessions
of a Child of the Century. The ex-fl ame of Kate Moss was supposed to give 30 interviews on the Carlton Cinéma Club beach, but he ended up giving 80... Good going Pete!
A weakness for sweetness. AISHWARYA RAI loves muffi ns and isn’t afraid to sayit. The Indian actress who is staying at the Martinez during her visit to la Croisette as the ambassadress for L’Oréal Paris, adores these cakes, which are laid on by room service at the luxury hotel. She’d better watch her waistline though!
ROBERT PATTINSON, KRISTEN STEWART, KIRSTEN DUNST and BENICIO DEL TORO spent an evening together at Silencio discussing the seventh art... Just a casual meal amongst friends.
Watch out for the sun... To protect their eyes, DOLORES CHAPLIN, ALEXANDRA LAMY, EMMANUELLE DEVOS and CLOTILDE COURAU couldn’t
No comment.
resist Solaris sunglasses. As for LUDIVINE SAGNIER, CHRISTA THERET and AUDREY DANA, they indulged in pairs of Jimmy Fairly eyewear. Each actress has her own style.
Love at fi rst sight. The American singer Aloe Blacc has fallen in love with the French Riviera since he arrived at Hotel 3.14 to give a concert during a charity event organised for the fi lm Dalai-Lamas. He even says he would like to move here. How well we understand him.
No comment. At fi ve months pregnant, the actress REESE
WITHERSPOON wouldn’t talk about her baby, or about her two other children. She was in Cannes to talk cinema, and nothing else, is that clear?
The palm for the most ‘out-there’ event. THE AIRNADETTES, an air guitar group, got pulses racing at the 3.14 Hotel last night. We danced on the hotel tables until the early hours. Amazing.
While BRAD PITT was in Cannes, his other half – ANGELINA JOLIE – was looking after the children at their house in the Var. A modern couple...
