En1799,Gaussproposecommesujetdethèsesapremièredémonstrationduthéorèmefondamentaldel’algèbrequiénoncequelenombrederacinesd’uneéquationestégalaudegrédecetteéquation.Sadémonstrationleconduitàconcevoirunereprésentationgéométriquedesnombrescomplexescommepointduplan.Parexemple,l’équationx4+3x2-5x+3=0possède4solutions(nonnécessairementréelles).C’estdansledomainedesprobabilitésquelenomdeGaussrestelepluscélèbre.Ilconçoituneloistatistiquecontinue,appeléeloinormaleouloideLaplace-Gauss,dontlarépartitionestreprésentéeparlafameusecourbeencloche.L’adjectif«normale»s’expliqueparlefaitquecetteloidécritetmodélisedessituationsstatistiquesaléatoiresconcrètesetnaturelles.
