  • Un mot de l'ditriceA message from the Editor

Cordialement.

Our West Island is a clean, safe and dynamic place and, in my opinion, without a doubt, the best place to work, raise children, live, love and laugh. Home owners and other residents already know this, of course, but if you are just moving here (a sincere "Welcome" to you) it is worthwhile repeating. We hope you'll be as happy here as we are!

Throughout the years, our popular bi-annual W.I. Guide has become an indispensable tool for thousands of residents. We have succeeded in, both, providing businesses with a unique and cost effective medium with which to reach their target market and supplying over 100,000 West Island readers with a visually appealing, convenient and handy reference tool.

We are again, in this issue, inviting readers to participate in our Draws to win 1 of 3 eReaders/Multimedia-Tablets (see details on Page 38) and remind you to familiarize yourselves with our advertises in these pages, most of whom are offering unique and exclusive discounts to you for a limited time.

We are pleased to be your West Island info-connection and urge you to participate in our evolution. (See the "What's New" text-box, below, for ways to communicate with us.

From our West Island family to yours, our wish for a healthy, happy, productive, fun and safe Spring and Summer 2011!

    Cordialement, (With kindest regards,)

Sure a lot of people are talking about Communications Animasindividualized language training approach. And, with good reason.

Since 1982, Communications Anima has proven to be the leader inprofessional language training in oral and written French, English,Spanish, German and Mandarin. Learning a second language requirestop-notch educational facilities and one-on-one personalized instruction. The West Islands Communications Anima Language Center capably

bridges the gap between these tworequirements. This family-ownedacademy offers a full range of profes-sionally designed and taught languagecourses. The curriculum covers groupand private instruction; test prepara-tion for the OLF (Office qubcois de lalangue franaise), TOEFL (Test ofEnglish as a Foreign Language), andother language exams as well as cus-tomized courses for corporations suchas Bombardier, Merck Frosst and Avonto name a few. Such courses providetraining that focuses on the specificterminology used in various profes-sions. Yet Communications Animaoffers a one-on-one learning approachthat cannot be matched by large insti-tutions not just in private sessions, butin their group classes too (5 studentsmaximum). The staff of instructors atAnima has the professional experi-ence, as well as the educational back-ground, required to teach everyonefrom foreign students to working pro-fessionals seeking a promotion or acareer change, and students of allages.

For many years, I took Frenchcourses at the free government cen-ters but felt that I wasnt progressingat all. I had the same experience withcourses offered through the universi-ties; I was so discouraged and frustrat-ed because I was constantly placed inlarge classrooms with mixed groups ofstudents ... Communications Anima isthe reason why I am now able to speakand write with confidence. Theirapproach to teaching is realistic, prac-tical and effective. Thank you Anima!

  • The Case for WhiteRoofs

Why, on a hot summer day, is it more comfortable to walk barefoot on a white concrete sidewalk than a black asphalt street? And why does it feel cooler when you get in a white car thats been parked in the sun than a black one? Simply, the colour black absorbs the suns energy, white re-flects it. The same principle applies to the roof over your head. Build-ings with white roofs stay cooler than those with black ones and there are a lot of black roofs in North Amer-ica!

Apartments, offices, hospitals, schools, libraries, warehouses and many ur-ban homes throughout the country have flat or low-sloped roofs, and 80 percent of them are covered with ei-ther black (or dark-coloured) asphalt or a black rubber sheeting product known as EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer rubber). Thats like having a hot blanket on your roof it keeps everything underneath very warm.

Research has shown that black-topped-roof temperatures can soar to 77C on a 27C day and remain as high as 60C after dark. On the same 27C day, a white roof will reach just 28C. So how do you cool off a black roof? Coat it white!

But not any coating will do. Regu-lar coating, for example, wont stick to some roofing material, wont re-main flexible, and is not effective at sealing out water. Polycoatings In-ternational of Barrie, Ontario, has developed Safe-T-Plex, a white reflective, elastomeric coating, which has been tried and tested for decades, that adheres to black EPDM rubber membrane and asphalt roof material. In addition, the product adheres well to steel roofing panels, wood, concrete, polyurethane foam, and tar & gravel roofing. This product remains permanently flexible, even in below freezing temperatures, affording a watertight membrane that will not chalk or fade with continuous exposure to the ele-ments. The coating is able to with-stand hail as well as foot traffic from workmen servicing air conditioners and other rooftop installations.

Are You a Solo Professional? Do You Struggle

To Attract Enoughof the Right Clients?

If you are like many small business owners and service professionals, running your business and marketing your services can sometimes seem overwhelming.

9 Common Marketing Mistakes: #1 Lack of FocusSo many ideas so little time. Many issues can sabotage your business success. Lack of focus is near the top of the list. #2 No System for Generating New BusinessDo you feel uncomfortable when it comes time to say who you are, what you do, and why people should work with you? Many solo professionals are afraid to ask for the business!#3 Inconsistent Follow UpFailure to follow up and to stay in contact will kill repeat and long-term business.. People want to know they are valued and want to hear from you.#4 Trying to Sell Features Instead of BenefitsIf you dont establish the true value of your services in the mind of your prospect you wont make the sale.

#5 Not Targeting Their MarketMany business owners waste pre-cious time, energy, and resources chasing opportunities that dont result in actual business because they dont have a clear idea of who specifically they are promoting their services to. #6 - Ineffective PlanningA big reason for small business failure is a lack of planning. Most entrepreneurs and business

owners would rather be in action than plan the action. Others overanalyze and dont act!#7 Staying a SecretMany professionals are nervous about promoting themselves and their services. If you're not making an offer of your services to a large number of people, you won't be in business long. #8 Get Well KnownWealthy entrepreneurs will tell you that it's OK to blow your own horn and its necessary if you want a successful, profit-able business. You need to be well known by a large number of people to be really successful. #9 A Single Source of IncomeProfessional service providers often trade their time for money, an hourly rate. And they try to do everything themselves. You can shift your business model from one-to-one service deliv-ery to one-to-many, and shift from the role of service provider to business owner.

Pat Snow and the 4B Strategies team can help you move your service business quickly to the next level to create the business you really want on your own terms. Business coaching, business consulting, train-ing for service business owners and professionals.

A Salt-Water Pool isOften the Pool of ChoiceIt can be complicated deciding which pool is best for your family. Many ques-tions revolve around salt-water pools or chlorine free pools. Salt-water pools are NOT chlorine free pools. A salt-water pool is simply one that utilizes a chlorine gen-erator.

Why Salt-Water? Swimming in a mild saline solution is much like taking a shower in soft water. Generally, when people swim in a non-chlorine generator pool they feel like their skin dries quicker upon exiting the pool. They may feel and/or see a whitish resid-ual, chlorine flaking, on the skin. In a salt-water pool the water feels smooth, your skin feels smooth and many people feel more refreshed. Ocean water has a salt content of around 35,000 parts per million ("ppm"). Humans have a salt taste thresh-old of around 3,500 ppm. Most chlorine generators require a salt content of 2500 - 6000 ppm in the pool. A unit that needs less than 3500 ppm to operate effectively is optimal. If the salt content is higher, that warm, salty water will be pretty distaste-ful!.
