Supporting the creation of strong dramatic works that stir and move young audiences and facilitating their accessibility is clearly one of the aims of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec’s sustainable cultural development initiatives.

The CALQ is pleased to support the mounting of FOCUS Québec, which showcases the excellence and diversity of Québec’s theatrical productions for young audiences, as well as creating a valuable networking opportunity for producers and programmers from here and abroad.

I would like to expressly congratulate La Maison Théâtre, L’Arrière Scène, Les Gros Becs and Les Coups de Théâtre for their willingness to join forces to make the hosting of this 3rd edition possible, in collaboration with the CINARS.

Anne-Marie Jean

CEO of the CALQ

To all those who love Theatre for Young Audiences,

As is the case every two years, this 3rd edition of FOCUS Québec is an opportunity to share with you the diversity of TYA performances here in Quebec.

The Maison Théâtre, the Festival international des arts jeune public Les Coups de Théâtre, L’Arrière-Scène – Centre dramatique pour l’enfance et la jeunesse en Montérégie and the Centre de diffusion de théâtre jeu-nesse Les Gros Becs have once again joined forces to present during this 3-day conference nine productions specially selected for you, with three of them included in the Coups de Théâtre program.

In addition to participating in two professional get-togethers, you will also have an opportunity to consider new works for your upcoming theatre seasons, as we are featuring five new plays. That means not only do you get a look at upcoming new works, but you stay informed and engaged in enriching discussions.

Our sincere thanks to the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts for their ongoing support for this Quebec theatre showcase initiative.

Enjoy your stay in Montreal, as well as the shows and exciting new encounters!

Alain Grégoire

Président-directeur général

Art opens many doors – to the soul, to other cultures, to exchanges with other countries, to our world.

The Canada Council for the Arts’ commitment to give Canadian artists more opportunities to present and share their work at home and abroad means that an even broader public can be captivated by their excellent creations and pertinent points of view. The Council considers youth one of its top priorities and salutes organizations and events that help artists to reach young audiences.

The Canada Council for the Arts is proud to support FOCUS Québec because for us, the arts help to shape a brighter future.

ET VOILÀ ENCORE UN BEAU DIMANCHE DE PASSÉ ! THÉÂTRE MAGASIN AND THÉÂTRE DE LA VIEILLE 17 (ONTARIO)

It’s Sunday. The show is over and the audience is leaving the theatre. While striking the set, two actors—a woman and a man—talk about their profession. The result is a few heated arguments and some bizarre situations: a marionette refuses to go back into its case, props mysteriously multiply and the characters in the play seem to have it out for the actors. The boundary between life and theatre becomes confused. Lost in this theatrical illusion, will the actors be able to continue their tour? Et voilà encore un beau dimanche de passé! (Another Sunday come and gone!) looks at what it means to be an actor and the universal search for meaning in our lives.

THÉÂTRE MAGASIN The company's plays are characterized by impassioned writing, energized by a word-weaving poet who toys not only with words but also with objects and music. Inspired by myths and fairy tales, Théâtre Magasin embraces this rich, universal material, transforming it into captivating, vivacious works.www.theatremagasin.com

In a combination of clumsiness and enthusiasm, three clowns are passionately determined to explore and share their playfulness and exploits. While one reads, sleeps or plays the violin in comically dangerous positions, another sings and dances with unnerving skill while the third, a construction pro, demolishes with devilish energy the improbable objects that she has just built. Throughout all the humour, contortions and acrobatics, the trio provides high calibre entertainment brimming with the highly communicative vitality of these three magnificent performers.

L’AUBERGINEL’Aubergine de la Macédoine pursues the art of clowning as a highly theatrical form by creating, producing and presenting high quality performances that mingle performing arts disciplines with circus skills in works that feature appealing characters dramatically brought to life onstage. The company has established a niche position by cultivating a specific artistic vision that makes vibrant use of clowning, the circus arts, music, movement and theatre.www.laubergine.qc.ca/en

“Would you like to no longer feel cold?” If we had the choice we would, like the young boy Kay, accept this proposal made by the queen. But does no longer feeling cold also mean a permanently frozen heart? The little girl Gerda is not so easily duped. The Snow Queen gets knocked down a peg or two in this ebullient play loosely based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale and incarnated by the puppets of the renowned Théâtre de l’Œil. The shows recounts the courageous quest by Gerda to find Kay as it lucidly questions our ways of responding to the hardships of life.

THÉÂTRE DE L’ŒIL This is the 26th play by Théâtre de l’Œil, which since 1973 has developed works for young audiences that diversify and enrich the art of puppetry. The company tours its shows in Quebec, across Canada and abroad, and has presented 5000 performances to some 1.3 million spectators on 4 continents.www.theatredeloeil.qc.ca/en

DES PIEDS ET DES MAINSTHÉÂTRE ÉBOURIFFÉ IN COLLABORATION WITH LE CARROUSEL, COMPAGNIE DE THÉÂTRE

In a world where things often come in pairs, SHE has only one hand and HE has only one foot. In the blink of an eye, they magically make things right, and HE ends up with two feet, and SHE with two hands! Is it make-believe? A game? Whatever it is, before you know it, they’ve invented a brand new factory for making spare body parts for anyone who needs them. Their first customers are not long in arriving: a DEAF EAR, a WOMAN WITH NO NOSE, a NORMAL man who wants spare parts just in case, a CLUB FOOT and, last but not least… a MAN WITH NO ARMS. HE and SHE start thinking about how to adapt their factory to the situation. In exchange for their services, SHE and HE receive… flowers! Flowers on the inside, that is…

THÉÂTRE ÉBOURIFFÉ Théâtre Ébouriffé presents contemporary dramaturgy that explores genres, combines artistic disciplines and uses the power of evo-cation, thereby expanding the worldview of young audiences. It takes to heart Michel de Montaigne's axiom that "A child is not a vase to be filled, but a fire to be lit."www.theatre-ebouriffe.ca

LE CARROUSEL, COMPAGNIE DE THÉÂTRE The artistic work of Le Carrousel seeks to answer the question "What do we say to children?" and also pursues serious reflection on artists' self-censorship as regards theatre for young audiences (TYA). Its original plays have met with acclaim in Quebec and abroad as major works in the TYA canon. www.lecarrousel.net/en

There are three of them, but they do not know one another. They have been invited by Ogo, someone they’ve never met. Together they wait for Ogo, who doesn’t show up. Who likes waiting? What shall they do while waiting? When will Ogo arrive? The waiting time soon becomes play time, with games that strengthen the budding friendship among the three new pals. But here he is at last! What a face he has, that Ogo! A magical harmony occurs as they discover this smoothly wondrous character. The pleasure of waiting increases tenfold upon encountering Ogo, who arrives in a rush, promptly leaves and then returns all of a sudden, constantly creating surprise and wonderment.

THÉÂTRE DES PETITES ÂMES

The mission of Théâtre des Petites Âmes is to create, produce and present, in a small scale theatre format, intimate puppet theatre plays for small souls (petites âmes), the souls of little characters who spring to life at the tips of our fingers and who make possible encounters with (often small) spectators. Theatre is where we create and tell stories with words (or with very few words), images and music, an invitation to embark on a journey that allows everyone, big and small, to grow together.www.theatredespetitesames.com/en

LETTRE POUR ÉLÉNALE PETIT THÉÂTRE DE SHERBROOKE IN CO-PRODUCTION WITH LA [PARENTHÈSE] / CHRISTOPHE GARCIA (FRANCE)

Dozens and dozens of letters are strewn by a roadside, all of them addressed to three young girls who have disappeared – a letter from Papa, Grandma, one from a summertime love, letters from friends and neighbours. Amusing letters, letters that are choked with emotion and letters that protest or that simply recall bits of the past. Dozens of letters but none for Éléna, who has disappeared, who remembers. An enlightening, sensitive piece, a celebration of friendship that gently speaks of survival and resilience. Danced theatre performed by three dynamic dancers.

LE PETIT THÉÂTRE DE SHERBROOKEFor the past 43 years, the Petit théâtre de Sherbrooke in Quebec’s Eastern Townships region has presented performances that push beyond conventional boundaries. Always seeking new ways to attract young audiences, the company invites youngsters to plunge into worlds that engage their imaginations. www.petittheatre.qc.ca

MA MÈRE EST UN POISSON ROUGE THÉÂTRE DE L’AVANT-PAYS

From his mature standpoint of age 10 (and a half!), Xavier tries to galvanize his mother, who stays in her room like a goldfish in a bowl. After a painful incident that overwhelmed her, she no longer speaks, no longer listens. With the help of his friends Imma and Mika, Xavier decides to take action in order to bring back to the surface this submerged Mama goldfish who has forgotten her son’s birthday and can’t seem to remember the recipe for her mega-super-delicious chocolate cake! What might have had serious consequences unfolds in subtle, sensitive fashion.

THÉÂTRE DE L’AVANT-PAYS Founded in 1976, the Théâtre de l’Avant-Pays was the fruit of an encounter between puppeteers who were graduates of the Université du Québec à Montréal and actresses who had studied theatre at St. Hyacinthe College. Throughout its history, the company has questioned the specific nature and multiform character of the art of puppetry. Over the course of its 40 seasons (1976-2016) it has presented close to 4000 performances and reached more than 800,000 spectators.www.avantpays.qc.ca

EDGAR PAILLETTES L’ARRIÈRE SCÈNE AND LA MANIVELLE THÉÂTRE (FRANCE)

Henri feels like he’s invisible: his little brother Edgar is everyone’s favourite. It’s not easy to be the big brother of a boy who’s different! Edgar puts on a costume every day, even when it’s not Hallowe’en. Edgar talks in poetry. He even gets special treatment from the Tooth Fairy! It’s time for Henri to show everyone who he really is… but first he has to figure that out for himself.

L’ ARRIÈRE SCÈNEL'Arrière Scène is a theatre for children and adolescents in Montérégie (east of Montreal), creating and presenting plays for audiences aged 3 to 17 over the past 38 years. It offers theatre workshops and community outreach activities for schools and families to make the theatre outing an enriching event. LES HAUT-PARLEURSTHÉÂTRE BLUFF

Looks like it’s going to be a long, boring summer for the Son, newly arrived in a town where everyone else seems to have gone off on vacation. Everyone that is except for the Neighbour, a solitary man in his sixties and a composer of strange music, and Greta, an adolescent with an explosive character. In this small town dominated by its huge cathedral with its extremely loud bells, the Son gradually understands that all friendships are not compatible and that human truth is often elusive. This story reflects echoes of fragile things and highlights the lasting effects that others have on our lives.

THÉÂTRE BLUFFFounded in 1990, Théâtre Bluff is a company that commissions plays from writers who focus on contemporary issues and whose themes and aesthetic styles appeal to adolescents and young adults. A veritable forum for encounters, the company is constantly exploring through its research, original works and audience outreach projects new avenues in order to stimulate rich dialogue between the audience and the artists it engages.bluff.qc.ca

PROFESSIONAL GET-TOGETHER

Nowadays it is quite natural to stimulate interest in books and music among toddlers and preschoolers. It is not a simple matter, however, in terms of a performance. A growing number of performing arts professionals consider babies as spectators in their own right and believe they are entitled to a quality performance, conceived and produced specifically for them by theatre professionals. For programmers and presenters, that means questioning the sort of welcome reserved for very young spectators and their families and teachers. For adults accompanying children that raises a question or perhaps an anxiety. How can I support and accompany a young child when I myself have little interest in live performance and culture?

In order to explore such questions and to come up with possible solutions, La Passerelle in Rixheim, France and the Théâtre jeunesse Les Gros Becs in Quebec City joined forces to establish a research/action project aimed at developing outreach activities for very young (0-age 5) audiences. A series of interventions was created in Quebec and in France linked to performances by Fil rouge théâtre (Strasbourg), the company Incomplètes (Quebec) and Théâtre des Confettis (Quebec). Based on this experience organized by Céline Berthelard, artistic director of La Passerelle and Jean-Philippe Joubert, artistic delegate of Théâtre jeunesse Les Gros Becs, a discussion hosted by Alain Grégoire, president and general manager of the Maison Théâtre, will focus on the question "Can we prepare toddlers for a show and should we?"

Other participating panellists :

Marjorie Audet, project manager for very young audiences of Théâtre jeunesse Les Gros Becs

Laurence P. Lafaille and Audrey Marchand, directors of Les Incomplètes

Virginie Lonchamps, coordinator of Pôle Spectacle Vivant for the Agence Culturelle d’Alsace

Perrine Monnet, director of public relations and communications for the TYA program at the Relais Culturel de Saverne

_

The Research / action projet

The first phase of the project (2015-16) focused on outreach activities aimed at very young spectators in day care centres in Quebec and France. Using the presentation of the shows Enchantés by Fil Rouge Théâtre and Édredon by the company Incomplètes, the two cultural mediators (Stéphanie Brisset and Marjorie Audet) met with groups of young children before and after the performances in question. The evaluation of the project led to a second phase in autumn 2016 that consisted of creating and experimenting with an audience outreach tool aimed at day care specialists who accompany their young charges to a theatre outing.

The study was carried out at the request of the Canada Council by the consulting firm Daigle/Saire in response to concerns raised by several TYA professionals across Canada regarding the presentation and programming of plays, as well as the size and composition of audiences for TYA performances. It is based on a documentary survey, a statistical analysis and consultations with various TYA participants. This presentation will be followed by a question period.

Why us? Why now? What did we do? What did we forgot or neglect to do? There is no answer that will change anything. Alice, the youngest of three children, won't be in class on the first day of school, something she'd been dreaming of ever since her oldest sister got her first school bag. For all of us death is unavoidable, but the death of a child seems unacceptable. Three little sisters talk about life… the before and after. In this piece, Suzanne Lebeau proposes accepting death without ever forgetting the deceased.

A cardboard world where everything is visibly rotten and rotting, a place where everyone spies on everyone else, a zone where stability is touch-and-go, always on the verge of imploding. In this atmosphere of every man for himself, a lone voice of reproach rises in the night, speaking out against fearful surveillance, expressing the unspoken. From this acerbic critique, meant to bring together one and all united in a common cause, she asks: How does one become a woman or become a man ?

"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" is an affirmation that would seem to be self-evident. Yet compassion, the capacity to put yourself in another person's shoes, seems to be disappearing in our society.

This new play for adolescents from Théâtre la Catapulte is inspired to a large extent by the farewell letter written by Kurt Cobain before his suicide. It questions our fear of the other and the notion of "living together".

For the past 33 seasons, the MAISON THÉÂTRE has been presenting to toddlers, children and adoles-cents a selection of some of the most significant works of theatre from here and abroad. As a centre for presenting plays and community outreach activities, it provides a large audience from diverse social and cultural backgrounds with access to theatre. An association of 29 theatre companies, the Maison Théâtre constitutes a national artistic forum that makes a dynamic contribution to the growth and development of theatre for young audiences.

For the past 40 years and under the artistic direction of Serge Marois, L’ ARRIÈRE

SCÈNE has been presenting a wide range of diverse activities to bring young people into contact with theatre. As the Centre dramatique pour l’enfance et la jeunesse en Montérégie, it creates new plays, presents works by other TYA companies, and pro-

motes arts education and theatre training. L’Arrière Scène also supports up-and-coming TYA artists and companies, offering residencies for young companies and emerging playwrights.

The only presenter in eastern Quebec specialized in theatre for young audiences, THÉÂTRE JEUNESSE

LES GROS BECS proposes productions aimed at toddlers, children and teenagers. School groups and families appreciate the quality of the performances presented in a professional venue with an intimate ambience. Les Gros Becs also participates in promoting theatre for young audiences by supporting the presentation of new works and by welcoming companies with artistic residencies where they can refine and polish new works and meet their public.

A confluence of diverse influences that nourish artistic works aimed at young audiences, the FESTIVAL

LES COUPS DE THÉÂTRE reflects the vitality and diversity of a wide range of creative approaches to be found in the performing arts directed at young spectators. Founded in 1990 under the artistic direction of Rémi Boucher, the festival is a biannual event that is unparalleled in Canada.

The CINARS Biennale has made a name for itself as an indispensible multidisciplinary event, in which one can develop real international touring opportunities, build solid relationships with professionals from all over the world, as well as sharpen one’s professional skill-set and knowledge base. The event gathers around 1,300 participants from 40 countries and presents over 150 shows throughout the week.
