VRSAR INFO6
Vrsar is one of the most important tourist centers on the west coast of Istria. Itis situated between Funtana and the Lim bay. Considering its specific naturalenvironment, it is a perfect summer destination. The climate is Mediterranean. The winters are mild and summers are long and warm. The winter temperaturerarely lowers below 0˚C. The average spring temperature is 12,5˚ and the summertemperature 23,4˚C. During autumn, the usual temperature is 15,6˚C and duringwinter 5,5˚C. Vrsar is annually exposed to about 2000 hours of sunrays. Mostcommon winds are the northeastern wind (bura), the south wind (jugo) and thelandward breeze (maestral). The northeastern wind usually blows during winter(from the continent to the sea), rapidly lowering the temperature. The south windblows from the open sea towards the land, bringing clouds and rain. The landwardwind is a refreshing wind coming from the sea and is typical for summer days. The sea can reach the highest temperature of 26 degrees and the lowest of 8degrees. The coastal part is well indented with bays and small islands. The Limcanal, which is contiguous with Vrsar, is especially suitable for cultivation ofshells, primarily mussels and oysters.

History
Throughout the history, the name Vrsarhad many different forms: Ursaria,Ursarium, Vrsarium, Orsaria, and others. They all have the same root - “ur”,which means “a source”. TheMediterranean sailors used to take freshdrinkable water from a spring on thecoast between Funtana and Vrsar, hencethe name Ursaria.
The Istrian peninsula was most likelysettled already during the prehistoricperiod. In the vicinity of Vrsar, in thepit of St Romuald above the Lim canal, traces of the Paleolithic culture werediscovered. In the prehistoric period, several hillocks near Vrsar werecolonized. Fortifications situated onthe today’s Vrsar area belonged to thefirst known inhabitants of the Istrianpeninsula, the Histrian people. Theyoccupied most of the peninsula, hencethe name Histria - Istria. Besidesagriculture and cattle raising, anotherimportant economic activity was themaritime trade. The development ofVrsar started during the Roman rule.
In the 4th century it became animportant old-Christian center. At thetime, Vrsar was a significant intersectionof continental and nautical tradeconnections. The vicinity of the Italian Ravennalargely influenced the development ofVrsar and other Istrian Roman centers.
