    Chamber Activity

One of our great surprises of2010 was the success of theMaple Leaf Ball. Not just be-cause its always the premierCanadian social event of the

year, but due to all of the outstanding sup-port offered to this years ball by the TCCCsmember companies, Embassy of Canadaand the Canadian community. Its still hardto believe we sold out 3 weeks early, a clearindication that people were ready to partyafter riding out a year of political & economicturmoil. Adding to the special feel of this

years ball was the fact that it was a celebra-tion of the TCCCs 20th Anniversary as anofficially registered Chamber of Commercein Thailand.

In 2010, we continued with our traditionof holding the ball at a member companyvenue. This year, the Swissotel Nai LertPark Hotel was our host and if youre notaware, the Nai Lert Park is now managed bya Canadian company. The hotels GeneralManager, Mr. Torsten Pinter played a key rolein assisting the Chamber with the planningand delivery of the event. Whenever a hotelsGM takes a keen interest in delivering a solidbrand statement, you can always count ona great outcome and the Swissotel Nail LertPark delivered on all fronts. We sincerelythank Torsten for his support and lendingan additional hand with the purchase of acompany table at this years function.

Upon arrival, the guests were promptlyregistered by the TCCC office staff andserved champagne or coffee martinis as theywondered through a professionally executedsilent auction offering diamonds to Harleyrides. The chamber thanks Khun SukanyaRattanavadee for creating the auction areas

floral arrangements and Daniele & Don Lavoiefor the detailed product presentations. Thesuccess of the chambers silent auction isalways in great hands with this trio. Theirprofessional support also allowed the 20thAnniversary Maple Leaf Ball silent auction torealize one of its most successful outcomesin many years.

Included in the silent auction area wasa project supported by the ChambersCommunity Services Programme, the SilkWeaving Project of Chaiyapoom Province. Allthe silk on sale was hand-made by the womenof Baan Kwao Village and represented a rare

opportunity to support a great cause. After enjoying an hour of free flowing

champagne and coffee martinis, the gueststhen transitioned to a beautifully preparedballroom where the Chambers President,Mr. John Casella and The Ambassador of

Canada, H. E. Mr. Ron Hoffmann, providedbrief opening remarks prior to the playing of theRoyal Thai and Canadian national anthems.During Johns welcoming presentation, healso took time to recognize this years longlist of honored guests which included six ofthe TCCCs nine Presidents:

o H.E. Mr. Ron Hoffman, Ambassador ofCanada and his wife, Andrea Hoffmann

o H. E. Mr. Douglas Gibson, Ambassadorof South Africa and his wife, Pamela

o Mr. Nandor von der Lueher, Chairman ofthe Joint Foreign Chambers of Commercein Thailand (JFCCT) and his wife Pailin.

o Mr. Sam Cohen TCCC President, 1994& 1995

o Mr. Peter van Haren TCCC President,1998 to 2001

    o Khun Sirithorn Rutnin - TCCC President,2002

o Khun Kobsak Duangdee TCCCPresident, 2003 to 2005o Mr. Ron Livingston TCCC President,

2006 to 2009o Mr. John Casella Current TCCC

    Presidento TCCC Presidents not present:

    Mr. Sean Brady - 1991, 1992 & 1997;Khun Chainarong Indharameesup - 1993;Khun Kiat Sittheeamorn - 1996

The 2010 ball saw the return of the everpopular and entertaining Mr. Dan Fraser asthe evenings Master of Ceremony. We thank

Dan for being up to the challenge and givingus a great show, particularly during the raffleand lucky draw phases of our event. In reallife, Dan is a Director of Smiling Albino and ifyoure fortunate to have him as your guide onone of his companys many adventure trips,

we can guarantee youll have a great time.Along with two bottles of wine, the

evenings menu started off with Tartar ofAtlantic Salmon with Salsa of Papaya andMango, Pumpkin Soup with PumpkinSeed Oil followed by family style feast ofRoasted Whole Turkey with Brussel Sprouts,Chestnut Stuffing, Mashed Potatoes, GibletGravy, Fresh Cranberry Sauce and HoneyGlazed Pumpkin. Rather than featuring ourtraditional dessert buffet, the desserts wereserved at each table on a high tea standoffering Apple-Apricot and Walnut Bread

Pudding, Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate RaspberryCake, Pecan Maple Crunchy and FreshSliced Thai Fruits. We thank the Nai LertPark for their excellent meal preparation andattention to detail, as well as Bistro 33 forproviding additional wine sales and servicesupport for this years ball.

The evening was also accentuated withnumerous activities & events including a triviacontest which culminated with a hockeyshoot-out, Ambassador Hoffmann andAndrea kicking-off the first dance with thesupport of Childs Play, an anniversary cakecutting ceremony with Ambassador Hoffmannand all attending TCCC Presidents, a raffle, and lucky draw which offered a Grand Prizeof two round-trip tickets from Hong Kong toVancouver via Air Canada. Khun SukanyaRattanavadee, TCCC Director and GeneralManager of Thai Phum Skylights, presentedthe Grand Prize to the lucky winner, MadameAndrea Hoffmann.

After 9:30 PM, we also opened upthe 20th Anniversary Shot Bar for thoseindividuals who were really ready to party! To get our guests in the spirit of the evening, the bar served up free Bailey Comets, Coffee

Martinis, Prairie Fire, Wild Turkey and JackSparrows. These drinks definitely helpedto get everyone in a dancing mood, but littleeffort was required with a great band likeChildss Play. The band selection is alwaysan agonizing process given the wide age spanof our members. However, Ali Fancy, TCCCsVP and Khun Mont Faichampa of AbsoluteEntertainment did a great job in bringing anew rhythm to this years ball. We thank themfor taking on this challenging assignment anddelivering a great compromise.

Its important to note that major eventslike the Maple Leaf Ball are only possible with

strong support of the Chambers members, friends and our steadfast sponsors. In closing,we wish to provide special recognition tofollowing sponsors of the 20th AnniversaryMaple Leaf Ball:

omestic demand gains amid solidexport performance continue tocharacterize Thailands economy. With consumer confidence having

surpassed early 2010 peaks, the interruptionof normal business activity due to theearlier-in-the-year political turmoil seemslong passed. Private household outlayscontinue to stage a strong recovery withretail and automobile sales highlighting ahealthy advance in spending. The recovery inconsumption is being paired by a double-digitcomeback in capital and equipment outlaysby firms and infrastructure spending on thepart of the government. While foreign saleshave yet to display significant deterioration

from the rise in the currency, imports havebeen expanding at a higher pace naturallysupported both by Thai baht (THB) strengthand the healthy expansion in domesticdemand. The pickup in local spending hasyet to generate further inflationary pressuresas price gains have slowed during the pastthree months. Notwithstanding the gain ineconomic momentum both headline and coreinflation have trended downwards. Indeed, headline yearly inflation hovers currently

at 3% y/y, with core inflation at 1.1% y/y,remaining well within the central banks targetrange of between 0.5% and 3%. The Bankof Thailand (BoT) targets the annual coreinflation rate.

The BoT launched the process ofmonetary normalization last July, with back-to-back increases in the benchmark interestrate to the current 1.75%. The monetaryauthorities recently decided to maintain thestatus, and given the favourable downtrendin price pressures we do not foresee furtherinterest rate hikes in the near future. The Thaibaht (THB) will continue to be supported byfavourable interest spreads and the countrysattractiveness as a manufacturing hub within

Asia. Persistent portfolio flows led to thecentral banks reinsertion of the 15% tax onforeign investors capital gains from holdingsof bonds issued by the government or stateowned enterprises. The THB together withthe Australian dollar have been the strongestcurrencies within Asia after the Japanese yen.We expect the currency to close the year

In the 29 per US dollar range. Asia/Oceania Weekly Outlook is available on www.scotiabank.com and Bloomberg at SCOE

    Voyageur10

    By Scott Murray

Well sort of, TCCC Board MemberDerek van Pelt was born there, buthis family moved to St. Catharinesand Sudbury, before heading for

Yorkton, Saskatchewan, whenDerek was 10. Derek and familystayed in Saskatchewan untilhe set off for university in Texas, where he studied Management

    Information Systems.

This is where he first met SmilingAlb ino co- founder Dan Fraser.Dan had come to Thailand in1995 to work for the Royal Familyat Chitralada School through

the Ambassador Foundation set up bytheir university. They met because a smallcontingent of Canadians at the school gottogether to play ball hockey on a semi-regularbasis. It was the enthusiasm that Dan andfellow student Ted Rollins had for Thailand

that originally drew Derek to the Land ofSmiles..

In 1997, when Derek finished universityhe came to Thailand having applied to workfor the Ambassador Foundation, hoping hewould be accepted to teach at Chitralada

during his travels throughout the country andhe was.

At the end of 1998, having finished hisyear at Chitralada, Derek decided to stayin Thailand, so he set up his own businessexporting silver from Thailand back toCanada. He then went to work for thePrinceton Review in Seoul for a while. Buthe was drawn back to Thailand, and cameback to work for travelguide.com, where hedid web design. He stayed with that companyuntil 2002 when he hooked up with a Swedishfriend of a friend and went back into the

export business. In 2007, Derek sold his halfof the partnership to his business partner, just before he married his wife, Wanrada. The couple has a three-year-old son namedXander, and Derek has a step-daughterNattamon, aged eleven.

    Siam Wheels

Get your motor runnin' Head out on thehighway (sort of) Lookin' for adventure Andwhatever comes our way.

Steppenwolf wrote the song, weve allhummed it in our head, and the rebel in all ofus has yearned to live it. Well, Siam Wheelsgives you the chance to live that dream.Formed in 2009, Siam Wheels is a club

for people that love motorcycles but arein Thailand for a short period of time orinfrequently. It offers the benefits of bikeownership without the hassles.

    Explaining his custom motorcycle

business, Managing Director Derek vanPelt says, The nexus for this business is inthe exotic car club model in Europe and inthe U.S. featuring Lamborghinis, Ferraris &Maseratis, but I didnt have enough moneyto replicate that here, Ive always loved to ridemotorcycles and Thailand is a great placeto ride: the roads are good, the weather isexcellent, and the people are friendly.

Its very expensive to import a motorbiketo Thailand (it can cost three times the priceof a bike in North America or Europe), soan expat, who comes here on a one-yearcontract, and loves to ride motorcycles is

going to pay the Harley Davidson dealer topdollar for a bike. Then hes going to ride thebike two or three times a month, say thirty-six times a year, then hes going to have tosell it when he moves on to his new position.By that time, the bike will have depreciated

and hes going to end up taking a substantialfinancial hit on it - and hes got to findsomeone to buy it as well. Siam Wheels isan alternative to all that and you dont haveto worry about maintaining your bike eitheras we keep all our bikes in prime condition.

A member makes a commitment tothe club, which starts at Bt3,000 a month(Bt3,210 with VAT), and the member must

commit to 12 months. That gets the membera certain number of points (entry level is 22baht a point), then the bikes have prices inboth weekday and weekend points. All youhave to pay on top of that is the gas.

When you join the club, you get acommunity immediately, you get guys to ridewith you as we do at least a ride a month, and we can also network you into the HarleyDavidson and Yamaha owners club rides.

Derek stresses that Siam Wheels isnta rental company you are getting bikes inexcellent condition its just an alternativeto ownership. He also says that your points

dont expire and you can pay it forward -that is you could use of three of your twelvemonths to take an immediate ride and thenonly be on the hook for nine months. Allthe bikes are insured and have a Bt20,000deductible.

Derek started with Harley Davidsonmotorcycles because as he says, I wantedone, and putting a business around it is agood way to explain it to my wife. Its alsopart of the pitch, because many wives wontlet their husbands buy Harleys. Look at the

options; one, honey, I want a buy a bike its

US$45,000; or two, honey, I want to join thisbike club (at Bt3,210 a month) and get out oftown once a month. Its much easier to sellthe latter, while the first option will probablyhave you sleeping on the couch in shortorder.

One recent Siam Wheels ride tookmembers on a scenic overnighter to Pattayaled by a police escort. Its a club for peoplewho like to ride, not a club for people who liketo cheat death. A Siam Wheels trip goes withthe traffic, maybe a little faster, but everyone

goes together, and if at some point the tripchanges direction, one rider will always waitby the side of the road for the last rider tocatch up and indicate the route the grouphas taken.

Located on Chalerm Prakiet Roadbetween sois 7 and 9 (near the Udomsuk-Srinakarin intersection), Siam Wheels provideseasy access to the Bang-na Trad highway, so

you dont have to fight the notorious Bangkoktraffic just to start your ride. Derek says youcan be in those rice fields in 20 minutes.

    The company has 12 bikes includinga 1,450cc 2006 Harley Dyna Glide StreetBob, a 1,250cc Harley 2008 VRSCAWV-Rod, a 1,000cc 2005 Yamaha R1, a1,000cc 2009 Yamaha RI, a 600 cc 2008Yamaha R6; a 600cc 2008 Yamaha R6, two644cc Kawasaki 2010 ER-6Ns, a 1,584cc Harley Fat Boy, and the three-wheeledCan-Am Spyder, which is manufactured byCanadian company Bombardier RecreationalProducts.

Derek says, Do what you like, and likewhat you do is my motto and Siam Wheelsis a good way to do that. Siam Wheels isa motorcycle brotherhood, but not in theHells Angels or Vagabonds kind of way. Itsjust a bunch of cool guys who dig bikes, and remember: girls love guys who have hotbikes.
