諸位皆須五體投地。勤重致禮。想云。能禮所禮性空寂。感應道交難思議。我此道場如帝珠。釋迦如來影現中。我身影現釋迦前。頭面接足皈命禮。至禮阿彌陀佛。即云。阿彌陀佛影現中云云。禮法想云真空法性如虛空。常住法寶難思議。我身影現法寶前。一心如法皈命禮。禮僧準上禮佛。但改為菩薩等唯禮觀音云。為求滅障接足禮。此是懺悔主故耳。觀本號畢。維那引磬一聲。眾起。下同例。 Let’s take refuge in the Tathagatha who illuminated the Righteous Path of the past, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of the present, who has perfected miraculous virtues and merit, with utmost kindness and compassion. With one mind and body, she manifests thousands of hands and eyes. She guides and protects all beings, encourages them to walk the path of the profound way, and teaches them to recite the perfect and sacred Dharani, enables them to forego the evil realms forever, and be born with the Buddhas. Endless crimes and grave evils, that render one totally helpless, will all be dissipated. Samadhi and oratory eloquence, all one’s wishes may be fulfilled without any doubt. This grand and magic power deserves endless praise. Thus, single-mindedly, I take refuge and prostrate to thee. (The congregation makes one prostration followed by a half bow.) Single-mindedly, we prostrate to Ratnaraja Bodhisattva, Bhaisajya-raja Bodhisattva and Bhaisajya-samudgata Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to the Bodhisattva in Avatamsaka, Grand Adornment Bodhisattva and Ratna-grabha Bodhisattva Mahasssvas. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to the Virtue Adorned Bodhisattva, Vajna-garbha Bodhisattva, and Akasagarbha Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to Maitreya Bodhisattva, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva and Manjusri Bodhisattva Mahasattvas. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of all times and space. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to Mahakasyapa and the countless Elders of the Sravaka Sangha. Single-mindedly, we prostrate to Master Fa Chih of the Tien Tai School, who teaches the four contemplations leading to illumination. Sincerely, on behalf of the Gods and celestial beings, the four Guardians of the World, the devas and dragons, the celestial maidens and spirits of the sky, the spirits of rivers and seas, the spirits of streams and fountains, the spirits of lakes, the spirits of trees and herbs, the spirits of houses and buildings, the spirits of water, the spirits of fire, the spirits of wind, the spirits of earth, the spirits of mountains, the spirits of and, the spirits of palaces, and all the spirits who protect the Dharani. I pledge to sail the boat of prajna quickly. Let’s take refuge in the Most Compassionate Avalokitesvara. I pledge to cross the sea of sufferings soon. Let’s take refuge in the Most Compassionate Avalokitesvara. I pledge to obtain the full practice of precepts and dhyana quickly. Let’s take refuge in the Most Compassionate Avalokitesvara. I pledge to reach the summit of Nirvana soon. Let’s take refuge in the Most Compassionate Avalokitesvara. I pledge to enter the home of non-doing quickly. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva pledges to the Buddha: “Bhagavan, if any being who recites amd upholds the miraculous Dharani of Great Compassion, and is reborn in the three evil realms, will not attain ultimate enlightenment. If any being, who recites and upholds the miraculous Dharani of Great Compassion, and is not reborn in a Buddha Land, I will not attain ultimate enlightenment. If any being, who recites and upholds the miraculous Dharani of Great Compassion, and does not acquire the boundless samadhi and oratory eloquence, I will not attain ultimate enlightenment. If any being, who recites and upholds the miraculous Dharani of Great Compassion, and cannot have their wishes fulfilled in the present life, I will not attain ultimate enlightenment. After saying this, in front of the assembly, with palms together and a kind smile, engendered by the thought of great compassion for all beings, she discourses the miraculous verses and sentences of this grand, complete and unobstructed Dharani of Great Compassion. Deacon Master recites: When Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva had completed the discourse, the earth shook in six ways and the sky rained with heavenly flowers, falling down like snow flakes. Buddhas in all space were delighted, but the devils and heretics were all petrified. Everyone in the assembly achieved spiritual advancement. Some achieved the stream-winner, some once-returner, some non-returner, and some attained Arhatship. Some achieved the first stage, second stage, third, fourth, fifth, or even the tenth stage on the Bodhisattva’s path, and countless beings pledged to the Bodhicitta.

普為四恩三有 . 法界眾生

For the three realms and four gratitudes, and for all beings in the Dharma realms, let us pledge to cut off the three hindrances. Let’s take refuge and repent. Sincerely we repent.

禮三寶

Your disciples (xx) and beings in all realms, in our own natures, contains all knowledge, miraculous power and perfect wisdom. This mortal consciousness is the heart of the Buddhas. Because of ignorance since infinity, the true nature is obstructed. Confused by events, thoughts are tightened up in knots. We are equal in Buddhanature, but we distinguish between us and them. Desire is the root and the body is the vehicle of discrimination. In the midst of existence, we have committed endless crimes, such as: the ten evils and five deadly sins, falsely denouncing the Dharma and others, violating the precepts and rules, ruining temple and steeples, stealing from the Sangha, obstructing others’ practice, destroying public property, drink and food. Thousands of Buddhas may come and go, but our sins cannot all be repented. Our crimes are boundless. Unto death, we fall into the three lower realms and suffer endlessly. Even while alive, there will be much distress, sickness and sufferings, hindering our cultivation, and obstructing our progress. (The congregation makes one prostration.)

Let’s take refuge in Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. (The congregation makes one prostration.) In front of all great masters, we pledge the Bodhicitta, and practice the truthful way of the Dharani. With all beings, we admit our faults and sincerely ask for forgivenesss. Our sins will be eliminated. May the most compassionate Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva Mahasattva guard us with her thousand arms, and illuminate us with her thousand eyes. May all internal and external hindrances be eliminated. All pledges and practices for the self and others can be completed. (The congregation makes one prostration.) We will see our true natures and realize all wisdom. We will conquer all evils and diligently practice the three karmas. We shall never be born in other realms than in Amitabha Buddha’s Land of Ultimate Bliss. We make offering to the most compassionate Avalokitesvara in person, learn the core of all Dharma and help deliver all beings from the painful wheel of rebirth into the land of Wisdom. Now that we have repented and pledged. Let’s take refuge and prostrate to the Three Jewels. (The congregation joins to chant the names of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The names will be repeated for three times. The congregation stands, makes a half bow, starts to circumambulate the table, and advances one corner each time. On the third time, keep circumambulating and stop back at the original place before the third chanting is completed.)

Let’s take refuge in our teacher Sakyamuni Buddha. (Congregation circumambulates.) Let’s take refuge in Amitabha Buddha. Let’s take refuge in the thousand lights, quietude Buddha. Let’s take refuge in the grand, complete, and great compassionate Dharani. Let’s take refuge in Avalokitesvara, the Bodhisattva with thousands of arms and eyes.(Congregation circumambulates.) Let’s take refuge in Mahasthamaprata Bodhisattva. Let’s take refuge in the Bodhisattva of Total and Absolute Control. (Congregation circumambulates.) (Circumambulation completed, the congregation returns to the original place.)

Let’s take refuge in the eternally Existing Three Jewels of the Mahayana. The congregation kneels down. At this point the head priest will recite the reason and attendance of the repentance service. He will pray for the congregation and ask that all merits be redistributed.

Taking refuge in the Buddha, I wish all sentient beings will understand the highest doctrine, and make the greatest vow. Taking refuge in the Dharma, I wish all sentient beings will study deeply the Sutra Pitaka, and acquire an ocean of wisdom. Taking refuge in the Sangha, I wish all sentient beings to lead the congregation in harmony and without any obstruction.
