On appelle phonème une unité irréductible du langage, c’est à dire, pour simplifier : un son du langage. Un alphabet est un système de transcription qui affecte des signes graphiques à des phonèmes selon un certain nombre de règles d’orthographe. Les signes graphiques qui composent l’alphabet sont appelés les « Lettres ». L’alphabet que nous utilisons pour la transcription de la langue amazighe, est à trois signes graphiques près, l’alphabet mis au point par Mouloud Mammeri. C’est l’alphabet qu’utilisent pratiquement tous les usagers de la langue amazighe écrite. Il est courant, efficace et très pratique. Il est, techniquement, le plus adapté à la langue amazighe. De plus, l’essentiel des travaux littéraires et linguistiques amazighs est transcrit dans cet alphabet. A des variantes près, cet alphabet a été un vecteur de promotion de la langue amazighe depuis plus d’un siècle. Il s’agit d’une exigence technique vitale pour la survie de notre langue. On peut ramener le kabyle, variante de la langue Tamazight, à 48 phonèmes courants qu’on doit transcrire a l’aide d’un alphabet de 31 signes graphiques ( lettres ) construits à partir de 23 lettres latines et de deux lettres grecques. Cet écart numérique entre le nombre de « sons » et le nombre de « lettres » s’explique par le caractère pan-amazigh de l’alphabet moderne et usuel de la langue amazigh que lui confère le statut non phonologique des phonèmes propres au kabyle qui se réalisent avec des prononciations régionales et locales sans incidence sémantique ou grammaticale significative. Ces réalisations phonétiques locales ou régionales sont souvent prévisibles. Ce qui permettra d’établir des règles de lecture et de restituer au mieux les prononciations effectives de la langue orale.
