ObjectivesTo showcase my skills with Adobe Photoshop and create a motage with a spiritual message.

ProcessI have been taking a New Testament class this semester so when I was asked to do a Spiritually themed flier, Christ was the first thing that came to mind. I sketched this flier and then went looking for the right pictures. I wanted pictures depicting times in the scriptures when God testifies that “This is my beloved son…” After selecting the three pictures, I loaded them into Photoshop and used the masking technique to blend them together. I used the lasso tool to extract the two smaller pictures and placed them behind the big picture. After a couple of critiques I changed to a darker font so that it was more easily visible. I also made the small pictures a little larger

ObjectivesTo showcase my skills with the Adobe Suite and to create an attention grabbing brochure for the horse judging team.

ProcessI began by creating a paper mock up of the brochure. Then I began sketching ideas for the laying out images and text. After sketching the design I used Adobe InDesign to create a model for the brochure. I used Adobe Illustrator to design a simple logo emphasizing this 4h activity. I used Adobe Photoshop to manipulate photos and crop them to fit. I then wrote original copy to explain and highlight the benefits of horse judging. Finally, I compiled it all in InDesign.

PracticeHorse judging allows young people to compete at judging the merits of horses. Practices are held to teach the youth about horses and proper competition conduct.

Competition There are roughly six competitions in the Houston area. During competitions classes of four horses are displayed to a group of judgers who then rank them according to a series of desirable characteristics. Points are awarded for how closely the judger’s ranking matches the ranking of the official judges.

ReasonsOne or two classes will be selected for contestants to give reasons. Reasons for the rankings given are recited before the judges. Points are given for logic, expression and poise.

WHY HORSE JUDGING?

Any resident of Fort Bend County ages 8-18 can join 4H and compete at Horse Judging.

Youth must be a member of a 4H club. They can be a member of any club.

To join 4H visit https://texas.4honline.com.

EducationYouth will learn the basics of judging show horses and the criteria for a well put together horse. This includes learning the anatomy of a horse as well as learning how to recognize a properly trained animal.

Confidence Giving reasons provides an opportunity for youth to take notes and quickly turn those notes into a brief speech. This builds confidence speaking in front of an audience, encourages good note taking skills and promotes logic.

Scholarships Several of the larger competitions offer scholarships for top placing seniors. There are also opportunities

for scholarships from universities that field collegiate level horse judging teams.

ObjectivesTo create a well constructed business card and to showcase my skills in Illustrator and InDesign.

ProcessI began with the business concept developed for a web based business class. I sketched several logos and decided on my favorite. I used Adobe Illustrator to create a logo of a cookie with knitting needles sticking into it like a ball of yarn. Although I liked the look, I wasn’t satisfied with the overall message of the logo. I added circular lines to make it look like a ball of yarn colored like a cookie. I added text with the name of the company. I then opened Adobe InDesign and linked the logo to the business card I created. I added typography with the information about the business. I tried to find a soft texture to add to the look of the card and to set it apart. I then sought critiques from family, friends and the client. I wrapped the name of the company around the logo in Illustrator and it was updated in InDesign. I adjusted the typography location on the business card. I also adjusted the

ObjectivesTo put together a cohesive web page using HTML and CSS.

ProcessThis page was formatted with basic html and styled with CSS. I used Adobe Photoshop to match the color of the knitting needles with the background color of the website and the color of the cookie with the background of the header and the color for the subtitle.

I wrapped the name of the company around the logo in Illustrator and it was updated in InDesign. I toned down the photo of knitted yarn on the stationary page. I

ObjectivesTo create a visually engaging flier using only Microsoft Word.

Process I sketched 8 different designs for this flier. I liked the one best where the picture was cropped into a circle. However, I could not find the tools to do this in Word. I chose my next favorite design with a rectangular picture and incorporated some of the elements of the other sketch. For instance, the title overlapping the picture came from the first sketch. After some critique I changed the font of the red body type. I moved the picture to the top of the page and I added the vertical blue stripe.

ObjectivesDesign an attractive flier given the title, photo, copy and logo to be used.

ProcessI sketched several rough ideas for the flier. Each sketch showed the placement of the title, copy, logo and photograph. Then I created a new InDesign document and laid out the elements according to the design. My document was reviewed by several classmates and my instructor. I then added line elements to the bottom and made additional changes according to their critique.
