President: Grant Sheldon Editorial Executive: Stephen Roe Volume 78 Issue 12 Tuesday 18 th September 2012 This Week’s Meeting: She has been a keynote speaker and lecturer in marketing, advertising, and consumer behaviour and communications at many leading tertiary establishments including RMIT, the University of Melbourne and Swinburne and Victoria Universities. Her professional acting career has included roles in Blue Heelers, Halifax FP, Neighbours, Backberner, The Games, Round the Twist, GP and The Denton Show. Although these occupations may appear disparate, there is one unifying feature - communication. Bernadette’s mission is to help people communicate more effectively so they can lead happier, more productive, conflict-free lives. Whether it’s through her writing of books, courses or speeches, her performances on TV, stage and film or through her training and coaching of executives, she is driven to help people uncover their own passions so they can pursue meaningful goals and get more out of life. Bernadette spoke about our need to be involved in social media as a tool for marketing our businesses. This must be considered as a long term strategy with the aim of building one’s brand. This can be done directly through sites such as Facebook but also indirectly through the use of other social media formats including Linked-in, Twitter and You Tube. We need to be aware that our clients use many different forms of social media and it is to our advantage to also embrace this rapidly expanding technology. Even if we are not comfortable with social media, we may already have a presence there through other socially active clients, friends and acquaintances. If there is any negative comment about us then our only defence is through the same media. This was a two day presentation squeezed into 20 minutes and as a result Bernadette could only lightly touch on many points. More detailed information about her career, qualifications and client listing can be found at http://copyschool.com/aboutbernadette.html (Editor’s note: thank you to Peter Baker for providing information about today’s meeting) Today we heard from Bernadette Schwerdt, a professional copywriter whose slogan is ‘Words that Sell’. Author of Copywriting: Writing for Profitand several best-selling DVD training programmes, Bernadette holds a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) and a Bachelor of Arts (Performance). She was also the recipient of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Trust for Young Australians and won the Gold Medal for Strategic Marketing from the University of Adelaide. She has also worked as an advertising account director on campaigns for firms such as Ford, Amway, Apple, Kodak, AMEX and BHP and as a corporate trainer and coach focussing on presentation skills, negotiation, leadership, client communication and customer service.

In summary it sets out where we see ourselves now and our vision for where we want to be in the future (3 ndash 5 years) Shortmedium term action steps are identified to help progress toward our vision

Have Your Say in our Clubrsquos Strategic Direction

For several years now some members have been suggesting at Club Forums etc that we should have a Strategic Plan to provide a 3 ndash 5 year outlook for the Club Such a plan was kicked off last year and this yearrsquos Board has continued to drive it forward including taking on feedback from our recent externally facilitated Club Forum

A draft plan is now available

It is not expected that all actions can and will be completed within any given Rotary year Instead it sets a path a direction to guide actions over a several year period

Your input in finalising the plan is welcome If you would like to obtain a copy of the draft plan please contact President Grant or any other Board member by 27912 Comments can be provided to President Grant or any other Board member up until 231012 Suggestions will then be consolidated for consideration in finalising the plan

Addendum to the latest report from exchange student Ebony

I had not mentioned earlier that my first time crossing the border to Denmark was with the Culik family We left early one morning and headed for the town of Kerteminde which is on the island of Funen We went to Kerteminde was because Boris wanted to research harbour porpoise and had to interview two colleges from the aquarium We saw harbour porpoise and the seals live in action and witnessed them for a little live show For lunch we ate a typical Danish pastry It was filled with chocolate inside and outside was drizzled with chocolate It was delicious

We took the bus into the town of Odense Odense is where the Hans Christian Andersen House can be found It was just a plain yellow house We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the cute and gorgeous Danish houses that line the streets of Denmark

One thing that I will never forget is when Barbara walked out onto the road to save the little ducklings that were crossing behind the mother on a big road They would have all died if Barbara had not stopped the traffic Therefore to remember this day and my first time in Denmark I brought a duck charm To me it symbolises Barbara saving the ducklings and the famous fairy tale The Ugly Duckling written by Hans Christian Andersen In general I found Denmark very clean and tidy To finish off a lovely day we ate dinner in Flensburg

After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago Not to be outdone by the British in the weeks that followed an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet and shortly after a story published in the New York Times stated American archaeologists finding traces of 250-year-old copper wire have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British One week later Australias Northern Territory Times reported the following After digging as deep as 30 feet in his backyard in Tennant Creek Northern Territory Knackers Johnson a self-taught archaeologist reported that he found absolutely bugger-all Knackers has therefore concluded that 250 years ago Australia had already gone wireless Makes ya feel bloody proud to be Australian
