NOTICE

C’est n Kérriw 1888 que fat composé "LE CARNA¬ VAL DES ANIMAUX1*. L'auteur roulait l'offrir comme sur prise au -onqert annuel dn Mardi-Gras dn violoncelliste Labouc, gendre du fameux chanteur Nourrit. Saint-Saftai

avait en jadis l’intention d’écrire ce Carnaral pour ses élè- rss de Niedsrmeyer, mais le temps loi a rail fait défaut. Las artistes qui interprétèrent l'œuvre, arec Lebouc, pour la première fois, furent Saint-Saén», Diémer, Taffanel, Tnrban, Maorin, Prioré, Dailly et Toarcy.

Quelques jours plus tard, le CARNAVAL DES ANI¬ MAUX était repris à la Société de “La Trompette", chez Lamoinu, pour (Mer la Mi-Car^pie, et la brait ea vouait jus¬ qu'aux oreilles de Liszt, de passage à Paria, qui fit deman¬ der par MadaaM Viardot s’il lui serait possible d'entendre chas elle la fantaisie zoologique le 2 Avril suivant ; la séance eut lieu dans la plus stricte intimité.

L’auteur, après avoir permis, pendant quelques années, l’audition de cette œuvre dans des conditions spéciales d’exécution, l’avait, per la suite, défendue. Une disposition spéciale de son testament a levé l’interdit et permis l’édition de cette fantaisie charmante, où la musique exquise se mêle

à la plaisanterie de boa aloi.

Nous en sommes d’autant pies reconnaissants à l'illus¬ tre Mettra, que de nombreux professeurs de musique utili¬ sent avec succéa le CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX eu le jouant à leurs petits élèves ou au leur faisant entendre des enregistrements phonographiques, et ea commentant cha¬ que morceau par des historiettes ou des descriptions appropriées sur les animaux mia en scène.

Maintenant, quelquea mots de musicographie :

Dans le n* IV, “TORTUES”, l’auteur s’est servi de deux motifs “d* ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS” d’Offenbach, qu’il a ornés de ses harmonies. Il s'agit d’abord d'un extrait du ballet final et ensuite de quelques mesures du final du

premier acte.

Dans le n» V, “L’ÉLÉPHANT’, l’auteur emprunte

quelques mesures au BALLET DES SYLPHES de LA DAMNATION DE FAUST, de Berlioz, avec un léger sou¬ venir du SONGE D’UNE NUIT D’ÉTÉ de Mendelssobn.

Dans le n* XII, “FOSSILES”, interviennent des mo¬

tifs de J’AI DU BON TABAC, AH 1 VOUS DIRAI-JE MAMAN, LA DANSE MACABRE, PARTANT POUR LA SYRIE, et l'air de Rosine du BARBIER DE SÉVILLE.

risation qu'ils ont bien voulu nous donner de reproduire

les quelques mesures d’ORPHÉE AUX ENFERS et de le

DAMNATION DE FAUST.

“LE CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX’ was compoeed in February 1886. The autbor wished to offer it an a sur¬ prise at tbe annual Shrove Tuesday concert given by the ‘ ce 1 List Lebouc, son-in-law of the fa mou s singer Nourrit. Saint-Saêns hsd fonnerly intended to Write thia Ca rai val for his pupils of the Ecole Niedermeyer, but was not able to do so for want of tirae. The artiste who performed tbe worfc, with Lebouc, for the first lime, were Saint-Saêns, Diémer, Taffanel, Turban, Maurin, Prioré, Dailly and Tourey.

A few days later, “LE CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX ” warrepeated at the Society of “La Trompette” at Lemoine’s, to oe le braie mid-Lent, and reports of it reached the eors of Liszt, passing through Paris, who enquired through Mada¬ me Viardot whether it would be possible for him to bear the zoologica! fantasy at ber bouse on the 2nd April follo- wing ; the hearing look place in the strictesfprivacy.

After baviog allowed this work to be played on spé¬

cial conditions of performance for a few y car*, the autbor had later forbidden it. A special'provision in his will lifted the interdict and permitted the publication of this charming fantasy, where the exquisite music is blended with humour of a high order.

We are ail the more grateful to the illustrions compo¬ ser for this work, because an mérous t esc bers of music usa “LE CARNAVAL DES ANIMAUX’’ with sncceaa in playing it to tbeir young pupils or in making them liston to gramophone recordings, commenting on each pince with short taies or suitable descriptions of the animais on the scene.

New a few words about tbe music :

In n* IV, “TORTOISES”. the autbor used two thèmes from Offenbach’s “ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD*’. wbich be embellisbed with his harmonies. Those cônesraed are, first an extract from the final ballet and later a few bars

from the finale of the first act.

In n*V, "THE ELEPHANT, the autbor has borrow- ed a few bars from the DANCE OF THE SYLPHS from Berlioz, “THE DAMNATION OF FAUST, with a »light recollection of Mendelssohn's “MIDSUMMER NIGHTS

DREAM”. In n* XII, “FOSSILS”, are interposed thèmes from

"J’AI DU BON TABAC”, AH I VOUS DIRAI - JE MAMAN”, “DANSE MACABRE", “PARTANT POUR LA SYRIE” and Résina s aria from “THE BARBER OF

SEVILLE”. We teks this opportunity to thank MM. Heugel and
