ITT Interconnect Solutions

ITT Interconnect Solutions is a division of the multi-nationalITT Corporation, a $11.6 billion dollar global enterpriserepresenting the brands Cannon, VEAM, and BIW. Ourconnector portfolio remains the most extensive in theindustry offering the most reliable and cost effective range ofinterconnect solutions. These innovations have enabled ITTto provide products and technologies to such markets as:

• Alternative Energy• Telecom/Handset• Computer/Consumer• Industrial/Instrumentation• Military/Aerospace• Oil Fields• Transportation

When you specify a Cannon, VEAM, or BIW connector, you can rely on a product designed, developed, andmanufactured to the highest quality and reliability standards. This tradition of excellence is based on ITT’scorporate culture of operating its businesses under theprinciples of Six Sigma. At ITT, Six Sigma is not just a qualityphilosophy but a complete corporate culture that drives theentire business. Our Value Based Management and ValueBased Product Development systems are two cornerstonesthat allow for the development of both leadership andproduct engineering principles, ensuring the correctindustry leading products are developed to the acceptedmarket driven lead times. These principles have allowedITT ICS to become the market leader in all of our business portfolios.

Six Sigma Manufacturing

ITT ICS operates manufacturing facilities in the UnitedStates, Germany, Italy, Mexico, China, Japan, and the UK, all of which have particular product area strengths allowingITT to offer a truly global footprint to our customers. Ourfacilities are world class and accommodate full verticalintegration utilizing the latest manufacturing technologiesincluding: automated and robotic machining centers, Super Market manufacturing cells, Kanban pull systems, and automated electrical, mechanical, and optical test andinspection equipment. The combination of ourmanufacturing strength and our advanced manufacturingfacilities allows ITT to offer products at market drivenprices. Our capabilities, especially in robotics, computerizedprecision tooling, Kaizen Project Management, Six Sigmatools, and testing, give ITT the most optimized globalmanufacturing footprint in the interconnect industry.

The Custom Difference

As the industry leader in harsh environment interconnectapplications, ITT’s world class engineering teams will workdirectly with our customers to design and develop costeffective solutions for their applications. In many cases wemay modify one of our standard designs to ensure a highlyreliable solution where timing is critical. Yet, in those caseswhere a complete custom interconnect solution isrequired, ITT will work with our customer’s Engineers todesign an interconnect solution which will be cost effectiveyet highly reliable. As professional consultants, ourEngineering teams will provide a thorough systems andmechanical analysis of any proposed solution. Theseanalyses provide our customers with sophisticatedelectrical signal and mechanical characterizations todetermine the best solution for their application.

RoHS Compliance Information

ITT has implemented a strict parts control plan for all ITTelectronics plants worldwide that allows the Cannon,VEAM, and BIW connector product portfolios to meet therequirements of European Union Directive 2002/95/ECbetter know as the Reduction of Hazardous Substancesinitiative. As appropriate, specific Cannon, VEAM, and BIWproducts may be ordered with an R prefix number whichinsures our customers will receive RoHS compliant parts fortheir commercial electronics applications and equipment.Since most RoHS hazardous substances center aroundspecific metal plating and lead solder coatings, ITT'sproducts for RoHS compliance are available in the followingplating finishes: electroless nickel, stainless steel, Anodizeover aluminum, and Gold plating. It should be noted thatgold plating would be recommended as the replacement fortin-lead solder when ordering board mount connectors.

Connectors with exposed contacts should notbe selected for use on the current supply sideof an electrical circuit, because an electricshock could result from touching exposedcontacts on an unmated connector. Voltagesin excess of 30 V ac or 42.5 V dc arepotentially hazardous and care should betaken to ensure that such voltages cannot betransmitted in any way to exposed metalparts of the connector body. The connectorand wiring should be checked, before makinglive, to have no damage to metal parts orinsulators, no solder blobs, loose strands, conducting lubricants, swarf, or any otherundesired conducting particles. Circuitresistance and continuity check should bemade to make certain that there are no highresistance joints or spurious conducting paths.Always use the correct application tools asspecified in the Data Sheet/Catalog. Do notpermit untrained personnel to wire, assembleor tamper with connectors. For operationvoltage please see appropriate nationalregulations.

Electrical connectors do not usually containhazardous materials. They contain conductingand non-conducting materials and can bedivided into two groups.

a) Printed circuit types and low cost audiotypes which employ all plastic insulators and casings.

b) Rugged, Fire Barrier and High Reliabilitytypes with metal casings and either naturalrubber, synthetic rubber, plastic or glassinsulating materials. Contact materials varywith type of connector and also applicationand are usually manufactured from either:Copper, copper alloys, nickel, alumel, chromelor steel. In special applications, other alloysmay be specified.

Heat dissipation is greater atmaximum resistance in a circuit. Hot spotsmay occur when resistance is raised locally bydamage, e.g. cracked or deformed contacts, broken strands of wire. Local overheating mayalso result from the use of the incorrectapplication tools or from poor qualitysoldering or slack screw terminals.Overheating may occur if the ratings in theproduct Data Sheet/Catalog are exceeded andcan cause breakdown of insulation and henceelectric shock. If heating is allowed tocontinue it intensifies by further increasing thelocal resistance through loss of temper ofspring contacts, formation of oxide film oncontacts and wires and leakage currentsthrough carbonization of insulation andtracking paths. Fire can then result in thepresence of combustible materials and thismay release noxious fumes. Overheating maynot be visually apparent. Burns may resultfrom touching overheated components

Care must be taken to avoid damage to any component parts of electricalconnectors during installation and use.Although there are normally no sharp edges, care must be taken when handling certaincomponents to avoid injury to fingers.Electrical connectors may be damaged intransit to the customers, and damage mayresult in creation of hazards. Products shouldtherefore be examined prior to installation/useand rejected if found to be damaged.
