EPLAN started with a vision to provide a comprehensive electrical design system as a direct response to an emerging market need for a better and faster way

than drawing manually. EPLAN has expanded its vision to create a modern 3D software system for the efficient design and documentation of cable harnesses called Harness proD. The system's strengths lie in the automated steps involved, from importing the wiring lists from the EPLAN Platform to routing the cables and generating the documentation and 2D nail board drawings. The ability to take over mechanically relevant information from various MCAD systems and the ECAD connection information means that EPLAN Harness proD has the potential to be seamlessly integrated into PDM environments. This allows for the design of the cable harness even when there is no mechanical prototype available. In brief: development times are reduced, productivity increases and project quality is improved on a continuous basis.

From its origins in 1984, EPLAN has become the leader in design automation software, with tens of thousands of users worldwide. The EPLAN Platform, the powerful database architecture behind all EPLAN software products, enables users to boost productivity as well as accuracy through automated content generation and error detection and

prevention features and the ability to store vast amounts of recurrent content for future projects. Engineers from the same or different disciplines can share data, allowing them to work collaboratively. EPLAN offers several design automation products that leverage the power of the platform: EPLAN Electric P8, the state-of-the-art CAE for electrical design; EPLAN Pro Panel, the leader in 3D layout for enclosure design; EPLAN Data Portal, a powerful search engine for locating over 500,000 components from over 80 of the world’s leading manufacturers; EPLAN Preplanning for the technical preplanning of machines and plants and EPLAN Fluid, a dedicated CAE for fluid power design.

Visitors are encouraged to stop by Booth 1126 to discuss this “efficient engineering” platform and learn more how Harness proD can increase your efficiency and productivity. There will be live demonstrations of EPLAN’s Harness proD presented throughout the day. Also EPLAN will be in the Komax Wire Booth #1123 to discuss the interface with the Zeta Machine from EPLAN Pro Panel Professional.

STAHL now offers compact LED-based tubular light fittings for use in Ex zones 1/21 and 2/22 that provide users with an alternative to typical linear luminaires.

With a diameter of merely 55 mm, the new lights take up less than half the space required by conventional linear luminaires, and reach less than half their weight.

What is most striking, however, is the design that makes the new 6036 series extraordinarily light-efficient: 30 four-foot long LED-based tubular light fittings, for instance, ensure an illuminance of approximately 500 lx, which would usually require 35 linear luminaires with two 36 W fluorescent tubes each – or alternatively 48 conventional box-type units retrofitted with LEDs.

However, R. STAHL’s new lights consume only about half as much power and the specific power consumption per 100 lx is merely 1.5 W/m². This ensures enormous savings regarding operating costs – depending on the comparative solution and the time frame, just under 20% to more than 50% savings are realistic in practice.

The tubular light fittings can be operated in a very wide temperature range from -40 to +60 °C. The maintenance-free units are suitable for general lighting purposes or for use as machine lamps. Due to their slim design, they can be installed in hard-to-access locations. Even at an ambient temperature of +60 °C, they reach a lifetime of 80,000 hours.

The vibration-proof units are IP66/IP67-protected by default, resulting in excellent suitability for maritime applications. In addition to ATEX and IECEx certificates, they also feature certificates for many major markets (GOST, Gazpromnadzor, UL do Brasil, GL).

typically combined into one operation. Achievable surface finish is 0,05μm. Feed rate of cathode between 0,1mm/min – 2 mm / min (application related).Typically multiple parts are machined within one cycle to achieve an attractive cost per part.

Q: What is the background with this technology?A: Historically speaking, PECM technology first emerged in the 1990’s, exclusively associated with adding fine details to razor blade manufacturing. Machines appeared on the market in 2006, and for the past three years, Kennametal Precision Surface Solutions and PEMTEC became partners to provide PECM Centers to global regions, including China.

Q: What does Kennametal Precision Surface Solutions offer regarding PECM technology?A: Depending of the region, Kennametal Precision Surface Soluitons offers customers equipment (machine and specific tooling and post conditioning systems). Additionally we offer process development support and subcontract activity to support either testing, ramp up of production, and simple contract activities.

Precision Electrochemical Machining (PECM) is a non-conventional machining process that can really help deliver high-quality components productively. For

specifics, we have asked Kennametal Precision Surface Solutions Product Manager Patrick Matt to explain more about the process.

Q: What is PECM?A: Precision electrochemical machining (PECM) is an electrochemical cavity-sinking erosion process with oscillating electrodes and a regulated working gap. It applies a pulsed direct current between the electrode and the workpiece. The workpiece dissolves anodically in accordance with the geometry of the subsequent electrode. This gives rise to complex geometrical shapes in practically all electrically conductive metals, e.g. in highly-tempered steel, rolling bearing steel, powder-metallurgy steel and super-alloys. PECM thereby also taps applications which could not be manufactured feasibly or at all in the past.

Shaping, drilling, or micro structuring on external or internal areas are typical applications PECM can achieve efficiently. Regarding tolerances, the process is able of achieving quality in a 2 to 5µm range. Roughing, finishing, and polishing are

Q: What are the key features that drive the adoption of PECM?Lower cost / partShort cycle times due to multiple machined within one cycle (typically 4 – 60 pcs. / cycle )Almost no electrode wear – therefore very attractive running costsIndependent from material hardnessReduction of process steps - (Shaping, surface finishing ( up to 0,05 μm ) & deburring into one operation)

Freedom of designOnce negative shape is created into the electrode – each part formed looks like the other.Almost all shapes & features are able to machine economically by PECM which aren’t by conventional machining

Part performanceParts free from any tension as neither mechanical nor thermal stress load will be applied to the part => part performance, fatigue strength of part increasesSurface generated free from any structure

Q: What are the benefits of using PECM versus conventional machining processes?- Reduction in process steps, PECM creates finished features

like shapes, holes free from burrs in a single step.- Superior surface finish up to 0,05μm beside 2- 5 μm

tolerance.

- Parts free from any oxide layers & free from any tension.- As the electrode does not touch the part, the process does

not care about material properties (hard , soft, rigid, etc.) and accordingly offers capabilities unreached by other processes.

- The running cost are very attractive - Attractive cycle times: multiple parts machined within one

cycle.

Q: What is the key production criterion and limits to leverage a successful PECM adoption?- Intricate shape and thickness of the component favor

PECM- High production rate and huge volume production

contributes heavily- Scope of dimension as a max surface to be machined at

once has to be within a 100cm² areas.

Q: What is the potential of PECM technology in the market?A: PECM has the ability to become more than a niche technology, as it delivers precise products with almost no post-processing effort (deburring, finishing) independent from material hardness, which is the base for lower-cost part production compared to traditional machining.

There is obviously a market demand for such technology for hard-to-machine materials as well as cost pressures forcing the market to nurture innovations. As most of the markets look for higher efficiency, we will see more and more engineered parts coming up (higher stress loaded, smaller, more precise, exotic material hard to machine, etc.). To produce these parts, PECM could become a key process as it ensures the economic competitiveness of their users on the global market.

The unique Safe-Lock™ design in cutting tools and toolholders combines a high precision press fit clamping with a positive form locking mechanism. This prevents round cutting tools from being rotated or completely pulled out from its tool holder during heavy machining. The combination of symmetrical pull out protection, highest concentricity and excellent balance of the Safe-Lock™ system, results in a vibration free machining process. This leads to a more efficient metal removal rate, that is superior when compared to conventional Milling chucks or Weldon shanked cutting tools and toolholders.

OSG has been testing various systems for pull out security over the past several months. Only the technology of the Safe-Lock™ system could convince the high-tech Japanese company. Jiro Osawa, Technical Managing Director at OSG headquarters and CEO for North America, explains: “Our field testing proved that the combination of our endmills with Safe-Lock™ resulted in higher RPMs and feed rates even with difficult-to-machine materials. This enables our customers to obtain a significant increase in their current metal removal rates, while at the same time having a higher security in their machining processes. Safe-Lock™ also has a very positive effect on tool wear.”

I n April 2015 the OSG Corporation, a world leader in round cutting tools, and Haimer GmbH, market leader in tool holding technology, signed a strategic partnership

and licensing agreement. The OSG-Group is bringing their round endmill cutting tools to the global market now with the HAIMER Safe-Lock™-System.

The OSG-Group, Japanese market leader for solid carbide endmills, has begun offering their high quality cutting tools with the HAIMER Safe-Lock™ system worldwide.

For the globally oriented corporation that is represented in 29 countries with 52 subsidiaries, over 5,000 employees and annual sales of approx. one billion US dollars, there was one further crucial factor, as Jiro Osawa argues: “In addition to the absolute technical superiority of Safe-Lock™ compared to alternative systems, it is the only system that is actually in high demand globally and also available in various clamping methods. Since we are not only in Japan but also well represented in North America and in Europe, we have decided to sign this license agreement and integrate the Safe-Lock™ design into our tools worldwide.” OSG is headquartered in Toyokawa, south east from Tokyo, where it has its solid carbide endmill production, coating facilities and production halls with the most modern CNC grinding machines. Due to these manufacturing capabilities, the company is able to insure the highest level of quality and availability of their tools. An additional global production network enables the demands of local markets and customer needs to be met with fast delivery and the highest of service and support.

Andreas Haimer, President of the Haimer Group, explains: “We have established Safe-Lock™ as a standard in roughing and heavy machining for which a variety of tools are available worldwide. We are very proud and happy to have reached a strong partnership with OSG, one of the largest and leading producers of tools in the world.”

Since its launch in 2007, the Safe-Lock™ System has developed very successfully and excited many international

customers. Last year alone, the growth was four times higher compared to previous years. This boom can be attributed to recognizing that the productivity increases resulting from the pull out protection is not restricted to typical aerospace applications but the cost and time savings can also be used in any typical milling application.

Revision management in the Eplan Platform is an important part of the engineering process – especially when various disciplines, including electrical and fluid

power engineering, are working in one database. One central challenge is managing various levels of revision within a project, therefore the new Eplan Platform 2.5 offers page/area-specific revision management; project areas such as functional structures, location definitions and disciplines can be independently revised, meaning that changes remain transparent throughout the entire process and for all project participants at all times.

Making standardization easyMacros are an efficient approach for standardization. With variant and placeholder technology, users can simply and easily add partial circuits to an overall project. The new macro navigator facilitates management of this process: macros can be worked on in a tree diagram or within a table – even with multiple selections. Macro variants and different representation types can be more easily viewed in context, and – as usual – be quickly and easily selected. Furthermore, Version 2.5 also allows management of several names per macro, reducing the need to create article-specific macros because one macro can now be used for several parts.

Simple terminal strip managementThe Eplan Platform 2.5 also has an enhanced terminal editor available to users. A graphical representation of terminal types and categories enables fast and clear validation of

Eplan Platform 2.5, scheduled for release in September 2015. A new navigator facilitates the creation and editing of electrical and fluid power engineering macros, which expedites template creation and simplifies standardization. The expanded terminal editor and simplified cable planning for machines/plants with Eplan FieldSys make designing even more convenient.

PRESENTING THE NEW EPLAN VERSION 2.5

Users can quickly and clearly validate terminal strips with use of the graphic representation of terminals types and terminal categories.

selected terminal strips. If changes become necessary, these can be done directly in the terminal editor, and the parts and components can be entered or changed directly in the editor as well. Terminals can be conveniently sorted along terminal strips via drag & drop. Representations of the information in the terminal editor can be saved as scheme, allowing users to quickly switch to and access the most important information. This results in a convenient and simple centralized management of terminal strips with predictable and validated results for the terminals and terminal layout diagrams.

Effortless cable routingBefore cables can be laid-out by the assembly team, they must first be planned and comprehensively documented – normally using a single-line diagram. The Eplan Platform 2.5 now provides users with added functionality for the corresponding cable layout for machines/plants. Using the single-line functionality, users can complete one-pole wiring plans and relay this information to the optional Eplan FieldSys add-on module. It allows the definition of exact cable paths and cable lengths. Another practical advantage is that FieldSys can automatically compile an exact order list for all the cable pathways design elements.

Nobody would even think of using the handbrake or parking brake when a car is going at full speed. In order to decelerate the car as required, a driver would

use the foot brake. Gradual, even deceleration is also often desired for devices and machine applications with dynamic braking actions. However, as safety brakes – in contrast to car brakes – can only distinguish between two operating conditions due to their design, namely “braking torque present” and “no braking torque present”, every braking procedure is carried out with the maximum braking torque available. With the new, intelligent braking torque control module, mayr® power transmission offer an economically attractive solution to generate a variable braking torque for ROBA-stop® safety brakes, making it possible to decelerate machines evenly and gently.

Continuous braking torque changes when in operationUp to now, brakes have been dimensioned with regard to the maximum load where devices with variable loads, for example forklift trucks, are concerned. However, it is not always expedient to work with the full braking torque. In case of partial loads, a stronger deceleration than necessary can lead to damage to the transported goods or even to sliding

of the wheels. If, however, the system detects the operating conditions and converts this information into a default signal for the new, intelligent control module by mayr® power transmission, electronic braking torque regulation is possible. Using the new system, the brake specialists have succeeded in continuously changing the contact force on the brake linings and therefore also the braking torque during operation. In this way, machines can be decelerated gently, adapted to the respective system requirements. Furthermore, the new braking torque regulation makes it possible to compensate for negative influences on the braking torque consistency in applications requiring a constant braking torque within narrow tolerance limits.

Prerequisites for a smart machineThe new, intelligent switching device by mayr® power transmission, which is operated with 24V or 48V DC voltage, can control brakes with a coil nominal current of 10A or 5A. In addition, the resulting clamping force for the brake rotor can be specified to 25%, 50% or 75% of the nominal spring force by means of two digital inputs. Alternatively, a continuous, analogue default signal from 0 to 10V is possible. The switching device determines without using a sensor

Glaston America, based in New Jersey, has established a strong reputation for excellence serving both the commercial and residential glass markets. The

company’s biggest customer is Cardinal IG, a market leader in the manufacture of residential glass. To ensure its glass tempering ovens meet the demanding requirements of high profile customers, every effort is made by Glaston to maximize quality.

A recent case in point saw the company address the issue of tiny scratches that can occur as a result of the glass being tempered without precise speed control on the oven’s drives. To overcome the challenge, Glaston researched the market for an alternative to its existing drives supplier.

“The solution arrived initially in the shape of Control Techniques’ Unidrive SP drive because of the flexibility of programming and option cards for feedback and communications,” explains Cliff

Matukonis of Glaston America. “However, we soon migrated to the Unidrive M701 as its new features and functionality better suited our needs. The integration of PROFIBUS communications and application modules for increasing the drives’ flexibility was also crucial in our decision.”

Led by the results of extensive customer-driven market research, and designed specifically for manufacturing automation applications (Emerson Industrial Automation’s traditional area of expertise), each Unidrive M model suits specific application needs. For instance, the Unidrive M701 series drives now preferred by Glaston offer benefits specific to sectors such as ovens and heat treatment equipment.

A total of 14 Unidrive M701 drives with SI-PROFIBUS are now deployed in the company’s glass tempering ovens, one for each roll section. Rollers pass glass through various oven sections to be treated and then through a cooling section prior to packaging. Glaston also uses 14 Unimotor HD - highly dynamic brushless servo motors from Control Techniques, one for each drive.

A leading manufacturer of glass tempering ovens has turned to the Unidrive M family of variable speed drives from Emerson Industrial Automation to greatly improve the quality of its products.

“The main benefit of the Unidrive M701 is the precise speed control we can now exert on the oven rolls which greatly reduces scratches and imperfections on the glass,” states Mr. Matukonis. “Furthermore, we now have more capability and flexibility, and found integration to the control system extremely straightforward. The system’s design and interfaces, along with its extensive diagnostics capability, also ensure ease-of-use for the machine’s operator.”

The Unidrive M family of drives offer class-leading induction and permanent magnet servo motor performance with real-time Ethernet. Each drive delivers maximum machine throughput through greater control with single and multi-axis network synchronization. On-board real-time Ethernet (IEEE 1588 V2), advanced motion control and high speed I/O for position capture has made it easier than ever for machine builders to create more sophisticated and flexible machines.

“The new line-up of Unidrive M701 with SI-PROFIBUS is now integral to all our new and upgraded installations,” said Mr. Matukonis. “The option cards give these drives incredible flexibility. For example, we are able to bring two encoder signals from other motors into a single drive. With minimal programming, we have been able to have the drives follow either of these encoders with smooth ramps between the two different encoder speeds. I could only find this option in significantly more expensive servo solutions.

“As well as this, we are impressed at how the system deals with any issues. If a drive fails, all the parameters are kept on a magnetic card that can easily be used to program the new drive. It was much easier for the maintenance department to simply put in the card and program the new drive.

“Between the Unidrive SP and Unidrive M series, we have to date installed over 100 servo drives at our production facility and we couldn’t be happier with the results we’re seeing.”

M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a widely used communication standard for measuring devices. It is predominantly used in buildings, for example in electricity meters,

gas meters, water meters or other types of consumption meters. By getting data from these measuring devices onto a PLC or SCADA system, users can get a total overview of their energy consumption, including building parameters which previously had to be checked separately.

How the gateway worksThe Anybus M-Bus to Modbus TCP gateway decodes M-Bus telegrams and maps meter values to Modbus registers. Mapping and configuration is done in a web-based configuration tool allowing the user to set up the gateway without any programming. It is possible to connect up to 20 M-Bus slaves and enable them to communicate on a Modbus-TCP network.

Connectivity to more networks with Anybus X-gatewaysThe solution can be extended by pairing the M-Bus gateway with an Anybus X-gateway Modbus-TCP, making it is possible to connect M-Bus devices to most industrial networks. Versions are available for CANopen, CC-Link, ControlNet, DeviceNet, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP, Modbus RTU, PROFIBUS and PROFINET.

Making energy savings possible“We see a substantial market for this solution,” says Niklas Selander, Product Manager at HMS. “Many industrial companies are currently trying to optimize their energy consumption. Their production lines are often connected to some kind of industrial network, but building parameters such as electricity, water, gas etc. are usually monitored on separate M-Bus systems. With our new solution, we enable plant owners to analyze and optimize their energy usage from PLC’s on Modbus-TCP and other networks.”

And even better: No manufacturer service personnel are required for the inspection, in contrast to other commercially available capping heads. On-site employees can carry out the inspection themselves, and the top part of the capping head can be easily and quickly dismantled without requiring tools. This ensures substantially reduced standstill times and therefore high plant availability and productivity.

Contactless hysteresis technologyWith the ROBA®-capping head, the hysteresis technology not only provides contactless and therefore wear-free torque transmissions: It is also impact-free and low-vibration, and thus guarantees a longer plant lifetime.

The capping heads also feature a high torque repetitive accuracy of +/- 2%. With their continuous and impact-free closing torque, they are therefore the optimum choice for the application of plastic screw caps with preformed threads.

They are better suited for the task than permanent magnet couplings with intermittent torque in slip operation, which in part “hammer down” the screw caps and make them hard to open. With the ROBA®-capping head, the limit torque can

Mayr® power transmission has now developed a new, extremely wear-resistant and almost maintenance-free generation of capping heads – for minimum

downtimes and maximum plant availability.

We all know this problem – stubborn screw caps on plastic bottles are sometimes very hard to open or cannot be opened at all without using tools. To prevent this, the capping heads which apply these caps in the filling plants and which screw them shut to a defined torque must work precisely and with high repetitive accuracy. The rustproof ROBA®-capping head (hysteresis capping head) has long proven its worth in the beverages industry, as well as in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries.

mayr® power transmission has now developed a new generation of these products, and perfected the already maintenance-friendly design of the capping heads. The new, extremely wear-resistant plastic/stainless steel linear guide, which is lubricated for the entire lifetime of the product, reduces necessary servicing and maintenance costs to an absolute minimum. A simple visual inspection once a year is sufficient.
