Notes on MP3/DivXWhat is MP3/DivX?

MP3*: MP3 (MPEG Audio Layer-3) is the compression formatof digital audio. It is developed by MPEG (Motion PictureExperts Group). Using this compression format, you canrecord the contents of about 10 music CDs on a single CD(This figure refers to data recorded on a 650 MB CD-R or CD-RW at a fixed bit rate of 128 kbps and a sampling frequency of44.1 kHz).

*MPEG Layer-3 audio coding technology licensed formFraunhofer IIS and Thomson.

DivX: The video compression format developed by DivX, Inc.compresses video files without any considerable loss of videoquality.

Note:¡MP3/DivX encoding and CD writing software programs are

not supplied with this unit.

Points to remember when making MP3/DivX filesCommon¡High bit rate and high sampling frequency are recommended

for high quality sound.¡Selecting VBR (Variable Bit Rate) is not recommended

because playing time is not displayed properly and soundmay be skipped.

¡The playback sound quality differs depending on the encod-ing circumstances. For details, refer to the instructions ofyour own encoding software and writing software.

MP3¡ It is recommended to set the bit rate to “128 kbps or more”

and “fixed”.

DivX¡DivX files greater than 2 GB or having no index may not play

properly on this unit.¡This unit supports all resolutions up to maximum of 720 x

480 (NTSC)/720 x 576 (PAL).¡You can select up to 8 types of audios and subtitles on this

unit.¡GMC (Global Motion Compensation) is not supported.

Definition of TermsDolby DigitalThis fully discrete format divides the music signalsinto 5.1 channels: Front Left (L), Front Right (R),Centre (C), Left Surround (LS), Right Surround (RS)and Subwoofer (SW: 0.1 channel) for recording andplayback. The number of channels that are recordeddepends on the software. (1 to 5.1 channels)

Interactive DVDAn interactive DVD is DVD software which includesmultiple angles, multiple plot endings, etc.

Letterbox screenThis refers to a screen on which the playback pictureof wide-screen DVDs or VCD (Video CD)s appearswith black bands running along the top and bottom.

LPCM (Linear PCM audio)In this format, the audio signal is converted to digitaldata and recorded in two channels without compres-sion. Because the capacity of a DVD disc is large, itcan store more data with better accuracy than a CD.

Pan & Scan screenThis refers to a screen on which the playback pictureof wide-screen DVDs or VCD (Video CD)s is cut offat the left and right sides.

Playback control (VCD (Video CD))If the VCD (Video CD) has “With Playback Control”or others written on the disc surface or on the jacket, the scenes or information to be viewed (or listenedto) can be selected interactively with the screen bylooking at the menu shown on the screen. In these instructions, playback using the menuscreen is referred to as the “menu play” for videoCDs. This player supports Video CDs with playbackcontrol.

Identify All LeadsThe first step in installation is to identify all the car wiresyou’ll use when hooking up your LCD monitor. As you identify each wire, we suggest that you label itusing masking tape and a permanent marker. This willhelp avoid confusion when making connections later.

Note:¡Do not connect the power connector to the display

unit until you have made all connections. If thereare no plastic caps on the hooking wires, insulateall exposed leads with electrical tape until you areready to use them. Identify the leads in the follow-ing order.

Power LeadIf your car has a radio or is pre-wired for one:Cut the connector wires one at a time from the plug(leaving the leads as long as possible) so that you canwork with individual leads. Turn the ignition on to theaccessory position, and ground one lead of the test bulbto the chassis.

Touch the other lead of the test bulb to each of theexposed wires from the cut radio connector plug. Touchone wire at a time until you find the outlet that causes thetest bulb to light.

Now turn the ignition off and then on. If the bulb alsoturns off and on, that outlet is the car power lead.

If your car is not wired for an audio unit: Go to the fuse block and find the fuse port for radio(RADIO) accessory (ACC) or ignition (IGN).

Battery LeadIf your stereo unit has a yellow lead, you will need tolocate the car's battery lead. Otherwise you may ignorethis procedure. (The yellow battery lead provides contin-uous power to maintain a clock or other functions.)If your car has a radio or is pre-wired for one:With the ignition and headlights off, identify the car bat-tery lead by grounding one lead of the test bulb to thechassis and checking the remaining exposed wires fromthe cut radio connector plug.

If your car is not wired for an audio unit: Go to the fuse block and find the fuse port for the battery, usually marked BAT.

Speakers (not supplied)Identify the car speaker leads. There are two leads foreach speaker, usually color coded.A handy way to identify the speaker leads and the speak-er they are connected with is to test the leads using a 1.5V AA battery as follows.Hold one lead against one pole of the battery and strokethe other lead across the other pole. You will hear ascraping sound in a speaker if you are holding a speakerlead. If not, keep testing different lead combinations until youhave located all the speaker leads. When you label them, include the speaker location for each.

Connect All LeadsNow that you have identified all the wires in the car, you're ready to begin connecting them to the LCD moni-tor wires. Electrical Connections (a page 14-19) showsthe proper connections and color coding of the leads. We strongly recommend that you test the unit beforemaking a final installation. You can set the unit on the floor and make temporaryconnections to test the unit. Use electrical tape to coverall exposed wires.

Important: Connect the red power lead last, after youhave made and insulated all other connections.

GroundConnect the black ground lead of the power connector tothe metal car chassis.

SpeakersConnect the speaker wires. See the wiring diagram forthe proper hookups. Follow the diagram carefully toavoid damaging the speakers and the stereo unit.

The speakers used must be able to handle more than 45W of audio power. If using optional audio power, thespeakers should be able to handle the maximum amplifieroutput power. Speakers with low input ratings can bedamaged. Speaker impedance should measure 4 – 8 Ω, which istypically marked on most speakers. Lower or higherimpedance speakers will affect output and can causeboth speaker and stereo unit damage.
