On 1928 the italian chilean journal “L’Italia” told that there were about 12000 italians in Chile,

most of them were from Genova and Rapallo and lived in Valparaiso, the “Genova of SouthAmerica”

The italians in Valparaiso became very successful entrepreneurs and owned the majority of the

little local markets in the city. They were usually called “el Bachicha de la esquina”, that means“il Baciccia dell’angolo” because Baciccia is Battista in Genovese, and Giovanni Battista is an

usual name for genovese people because of their local patron.

They were from “the corner” because they usually owned the “emporios” of the neighbourhood,

habitually positioned at the corner of the street.

At that time Ernesto Oneto Noziglia lived in Rapallo and worked at the Navigazione Generale

Italiana doing business with North America and South America. In Rapallo is where he met

Adelina Biancardi Gambaro and got married with her.

They travelled to Valparaiso because Ernesto Oneto had to open an office of the NGI there.

Being in Chile Sergio Oneto Biancardi was born in Valparaiso, their unique child.

Sergio Oneto Biancardi was born and raised in Valparaiso and became a very successful person

among the Italian community.

He studied at the Scuola Italiana Arturo dell’Oro of Valparaiso and after that he was professor atthe school for more than 40 years.

On that period he became the president of the COMITES Chile (Comitato degli Italiani

all’Estero) for two years and produced one of the biggest Italian events of all time in SouthAmerica, they gathered 2000 italians from all around South America and paid for them to come

to Chile and have a week of reunions and parties, all this with the help of the former Italian

government.

Sergio Oneto Biancardi got married with Lucia Garcia De Pablo, a spanish immigrant escapingfrom the civil war in Spain and had two children: Sergio (my dad) and Pablo.

In 1962 they travelled to Italy planning to stay living there but the economic reality in Italy

wasn’t that well at that time.

Back in Chile Sergio Oneto Biancardi continued with his life oriented very strongly to the Italiancommunity. He became the president and one of the founders of the “Stadio Italiano”, a sports

venue for the Italian community.

The Italian community in Viña del Mar also built the “Casa d’Italia”, a place to reunite all theItalian people and have parties and gatherings. This house was nominated to be “historical

patrimony” of the city a few years ago.

Sergio Oneto Biancardi was also the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Viña del Mar and

the Rotary Club of Viña del Mar.

Being the president of the Chamber of Commerce and of the Comitato degli Italiani all’ Estero at

the same time in the 1990s, he managed to have a reunion with the Italian president at the time,

Oscar Luigi Scalfaro and also with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Susana Agnelli.

Sergio Oneto Garcia, my father, was raised in Chile and he was taught as a kid how to speakGenovese and Italian. He also attended the Scuola Italiana of Valparaiso and after that he studiedOdontology in Chile first, and then he went to live to Milano where he did postgrad studies at the

Universitá degli Studi di Milano and worked as a dentist in the 1980s.

He met my mother and they got married in 1989 and I was born in 1990, then my brother was born in 1992. We both attended the Scuola Italiana also.

My father has also participates a lot in the Italian community, he has attended the “CircoloProfessionisti Italiani” for more than 20 years now and he was the president of that group for 4

years.

Nowadays the Italian community is still very strong in Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. We usually

met once a year in a huge event on April 21 st, celebrating the foundation of Rome and the

foundation of our school, the Scuola Italiana of Valparaiso. On 2013, celebrating the 80 years

anniversary of our school, more than 1500 people attended.

Every year we organise a football championship called “Microcalcio Scuola” and all the former

students of the school play, in addition to the last year students. We usually have 16 teams of 10 players each.

As an anecdote in the following picture there’s a postcard that was sent to my great grandmother,

Adelina Biancardi, from Trieste that we were’t aware of its existence until I knew about Origini

and began with my father to look for pictures of the family.

Finally I would like to add a Genovese famous song that my grandfather used to sing, that

represents the feeling of the Italian and Genovese community in Valparaiso and Chile. Theoriginal song is called “Ma se ghe pensu” in Genovese, the Italian translation is “Ma se ci penso”

and this is the Italian translation of the song.

Era partito senza un soldo,

erano già trent'anni, forse anche più.

Aveva lottato per mettere i soldi in banca

e potersene un giorno venire in giù

e farsi la palazzina e il giardinetto,

con il rampicante, con la cantina e il vino,

la branda attaccata agli alberi a uso letto,

per darci una schienata sera e mattina.

Ma il figlio gli diceva: «Non ci pensare

a Genova, cosa ci vuoi tornare?!»

Ma se ci penso allora io vedo il mare,

vedo i miei monti, piazza della Nunziata,

rivedo Righi e mi si stringe il cuore,

vedo la lanterna, la cava, laggiù il Molo...

Rivedo alla sera Genova illuminata,

vedo là la Foce e sento frangere il mare

e allora io penso ancora di ritornare

a posare le ossa dove ho mia nonna.

Ed era passato del tempo, forse troppo,

il figlio insisteva: «Stiamo bene,

dove vuoi andare, papà?.. penseremo dopo,

il viaggio, il mare, sei vecchio, non conviene!».«Oh no, oh no! mi sento ancora in gamba,

sono stufo e non ne posso proprio più,

sono stanco di sentire señor caramba,

io voglio ritornarmene ancora in giù...

Tu sei nato e hai parlato spagnolo,

io sono nato genovese e... non mi mollo!».

Ma se ci penso allora io vedo il mare,

vedo i miei monti, piazza della Nunziata,

rivedo Righi e mi si stringe il cuore,

vedo la lanterna, la cava, laggiù il Molo...

Rivedo alla sera Genova illuminata,

vedo là la Foce e sento frangere il mare

e allora io penso ancora di ritornare

a posare le ossa dove ho mia nonna.

E senza tante cose è partito

e a Genova ci ha formato di nuovo il suo nido.
