    2008

    MS Fram passesboth the northern

    and the southern

    polar circle.

When the Norwegian government decided tocreate a connection between the north and thesouth, Richard With and his riend Anders Holthetook on the challenge o thoroughly mapping

the seas along the Norwegian coastline. In 1893,Captain Richard Withs steamer, DS Vesteraalen, was brought into regular service along the coasto Norway, and Hurtigruten was established.

In 1896 Captain Richard With established a route to Svalbard,

and built a hotel there or his guests. Today, 117 years later,

Hurtigrutens explorer vessel MS Fram takes guests to

    Svalbard, Greenland and Antarctica.

In the heroic age o exploration (around the turn o the

19th century) there was a race to unveil the last terra incognitos.

The original Fram quickly became the most amous vessel o

its time. Even now the achievements o Frams expeditions are

unparalleled. With Fritdjo Nansen she was the rst ship to

drit across the Arctic Ocean. Then Otto Sverdrup used her

whilst surveying an area larger than any other previous

expedition, the Canadian territory o Nunavut. And most

amous o all, she took Roald Amundsen to his starting point

in Antarctica to reach the South Pole.

Today, MS Fram travels in the wake o these great explorers.

The original Fram was a vessel or broadening the perspective

o the world let the new MS Fram be the same or you!

As the only continent devoid o permanent human inhabitants, Antarctica is dedicated to science and

During the crossing o the Drake Passage, our Expedition Team will give a series o lectures about the
