A CORRECTION.
Our vepoiter appears to have mis-
heard Mr. Baldwin at the treatyconference the other day, and we
arc requested to repeat his remarkswith the correction. They are as
follows:Mr. Baldwin said the present
treaty will piobably continue, but ai eduction of .") percent on thepresent duties, or a loss of 20 aton, would be ruinous, because itcosts many plantations S00 a ton tomanufacture their sugar.
AID TO PRIVATE SCHOOLS.
The Advertiser reports that at a
political meeting recently held in
Ililo it was decided to ask the Legis-
lature for appropriations for a
variety of specified purposes, in-
cluding the Catholic and 1'iotestantboard'mg schools of that town. A
stated in our columns a few daysago, the Legislature has always been
liberal towards the cause of educa-
tion, and we have no doubt the com-
ing se.ioii will maintain the reputa-
tion of the past. The schools men-
tioned are worthy piivate institu-
tions, and it may be a wise and
proper thing to assist them by publicmoney. And there arc other privateeducational establishments, equally
entitled to consideration, which may
also be applicants for aid, that it.
would be sound policy to grant. This country, following in the
track of other.--, older and presuma-bly wiser, considers it the duty of
the State to piovide for the educa-
tion of the young. Ilcuce our pub-
lic school system, supported almost
entirely by public money. Now, inview of the fact that the Governmentplaces within the reach of all themeans of an elementary education, the question is asked, should thegovernment contribute to the aid of
private schools? The cortcct answerwould seem to be, that the Govern-
ment should not contribute to thesupport of piivatc schools where
and when its own schools fulfil re-
quirements, and it is conceded thatthe Government schools are fully
equal to the ordinary rcquiicmentsof reading, writing, and arithmetic.Hut in our exceptional circum-
stances, where training to a new
cmlizalion is a main object ofschooling, arc the public day-schoo- ls
capable of doing all that may beexpected of a paternal government?Seal eel v. Arc not the KawaiahaoSeminary, the schools of the Frenchand the Kugllsli Sisterhoods, St.Louis College, the schools at Ililo, and others, in which hundicds ofnative children have their homesand are regularly habituated to cor-
rect domestic habits, in addition to
being taught what may be acquiredin the public day-schoo- tloln a
national work which the nation may
properly encouiage and piomote byaid from the national treasury ' Yes,wc think so. Hut it is not wise to
giant aid indiscriminately, or in a
way to preclude the measure of
governmental supervision necessaiyto assure of compensating returnsfor the expenditure. Appropriatingmoney to pass directly from thetreasury to a school is decidedly O-
bjectionable, because it relinquishescontrol. AVe have a bureau of edu-
cation, and all government money
for educational purposes should
conic under its care.
REMOVAL OF CO. B.
Kunoi: Hui.i.r.Tiv:Why should Company H, Honolulu
Hilles, be permitted to leave theHattalion Armory and, with the con-
sent of the Ministry and the sup-po- it
of, some merchants, establishitself as a would-b- e l'netorianguard, by private means with piivatelicadquaitersV Vnv.
Kditok Hui.ixii.n:Why should the pleasant iclations
now existing between the variouscompanies of the Honolulu Ritlea besevered by removing the plnco ofmeeting of Company B?
f"P) VV " "y rfyp ij , nTv wT 1" trffvt V"1 j w 1Wvt-- r
It seems to tnc that the presentplace of meeting lias proved nil thatwas necessary In the past and willdo for the future. The various com-
panies meet on different nights, haveseparate company apartments, andare equally piovidert for under theMilitary Act.
Junior lias it that the merchantswill liquidate the expenses of Com-
pany 11 in its new quartets, and If
such be true it is placing that com-
pany under obligation5! to a smallpottion as against the interest of thewhole community.
We have had enough of this inthe past. If the Government can-
not foot the necessary expenses ofthe Honolulu Wiles in their presentquarters, then I for one say disbandthe corps rather than separate thecompanies. As for the pi i vale sub-
scription that U lotlcn, and it it. theduty of the Ministry to avoid suchsupport. Oxr. cu- - nn Hv.
QUESTIONS FOR THE PEOPLE.
Knnoi: llci litis':Did they not fall into lank and
file beautifully, this parliament ot
notables? Is 'this the Legislatuicthat meets lirst? And is it intendedto take the wind out of the sails olthe Legislature of llic people? Whosummoned this Legislature No. 1 ?
The .Ministers? The bankers? The merchants? The planters?Kb? Is not this just anothersuch "get up" as Kinney at-
tempted last summer? Do the Min-
isters howl about the treaty for thesake of creating sentiment for themselves? Aic the elect in league withthem? Is tliis the new committee ofthirteen? Are these notables tryingfor them, or are they only dancingwhen "Nap the Little" toots forthem? The treaty has four years torun. Can we now get anythingmore than that? Shall wc negotiatea treaty in commence live yeaisfrom now? Qit.i:it.

Awful Destruction,Tho Boautiful City of Louia- -
villo Wrecked by :iCyclone.
HUNDREDS oTpIoPLE KILLED.
A cyclone struck tho city ofLouisville, Kentucky, the night ofthe 27th. It struck the southwestpoition of the city shortly after nineo'clock. At that hour the streetswere alive with people anil life inall its activity anil brilliancy was atits height.
The llrst intelligence to the out-
side world was sent from Jefferson-villc- ,
Indiana, across the river fromLouisville, by the chief telegraphoperator of the Western 1'nioii Tele-graph Co. at LouKvillo, who hadescaped to JeflVrsonville from Hiewieckeit city.
Kaily repoits gave estimates ofloss of life reaching to 1300 and2000. An extra of tho'F.xaininer atIJ:i50 a. m., 28lli, says hundredsare dead.
From the Examiner's account thefollowing description ol the begin-ning of the calamity is taken:
"Shortly after nine o'clock thewind began its violence and in afew moments it became a gale. Then with awful swiftness the furi-
ous whirlwind burst. A roar ofsound, a swirl of furious wind, andthen Iho terrible confusion of crashinglimber and falling stone, followedby dreadful silence for a moment.
"lluildings were blown from alldirections. As they ware crushedinto shapeless masses the structurescaught lire and the llamcs burst intothe air and in a moment the ele-
ments were all in conflict."The wind in wild fury swept all
before it. The river below the citywas whirled into an awful wrath andat many points ovci Mowed itsbanks."
In Louisville the devastation wastorriu'e and the loss of life will cer-
tainly reach hundreds if not thou-sands. In one building two lodgesand a dancing school were in ses-
sion, and there were in it about one.hundred people. It is supposed notone of them escaped. An eyewit-ness saw six or eight corpses takenout in fifteen minutes.
At il: 13 a. in. a despatch said 553
bodies, mostly of women and chil-
dren, had been taken from theruins of Fall's city hall.
Henry Mason, member of theLegislature for Hancock county, was in Wright's cigar store when thebuilding fell, and was instantlykilled. Of 1 1 girls imprisoned inWright's cellar three have been takenout (lead.
The Union Depot, nt the foot ofSeventh street," was blown into theOhio river. A train making up forthe Louisville Southern road wentover with the building.
Many buildings after fallingcaught fire and the inmates havebeen burned. All the streets arcblockaded with the debris of thefallen buildings and telegraph andelectric light wires.
It is practically impossible to esti-
mate the loss of life. Thousandsmay be buried beneath the ruins. The fire adds a fearful feature to thedesolation. The los3 of propertycan only be counted in millions.
In the streets through which-pas-senge-
went to reach the raihvaj'station there were dead and dying, and from facts and flying rumorsthere was reason to believe that thenumber of the dead would reachone thousand.
One of those who escaped to In-
dianapolis by rail thought from theactions of the fire department Hintits works were destroyed and thatthere was difficulty in getting wateron the flames.
Street cars were blown from thetracks and crushed against the wallsof the buildings. For a time every-body seemed paralyzed with fear, apparently in doubt whether to liceor not. The work of rescue soonbegan, however. Wagons of allkinds were pressed into service andthe dead anil wounded hauled away,as rapidly as darkness and the con-fused condition of the streets wouldpermit, to houses outside the pathof the cyclone.
The cyclono visited many townsin the West and Southwest, causingloss of life and property, but authen-tic accounts aro all meagre.

Glee Club.Mr. Fuller wanted to say a few
words to young men. lie alwaysliked an object lesion and thoy hadone. there in the person of Mr.D.ivies, who was one of the Assoc-iation's most carucil stipporteis.hie reason was because he knew
what il was to be a young man faraway from home, and, althoughhaving long passed the time when heneeded the help of the Association,Mr.. Davies sympathised with youngmen from home who needed friendlyencouragement. He commendedMr. Davies' example especially intilts respect to all young men. Mr.1). was ono of a'lnrgV number whoearly inauifcsted'nii Interest in IhUAssociation. It' would be surpris-ing to hear of the. large number ofmen who had been interested in thisorganization in other lands, but whosoon lost Interest in It after cominghere. He did mil think there wasan Association in America whichwas belter equipped than this one.The electric lighting ol the buildingwas a great improvement, and nilkinds of parlor games were availablein the rooms.' Mrr' Davies camehere as a young man, like many ofthose he saw present. ly his in-
tegrity, by his uprightness of life,by his adherence lo the principleshe brought with him, he has attain-t- o
a position honored by God andrespected by men. Tho'spoakcr be-
lieved there was not a young manhere who follows tho example Mr.Davies has set but would reach adegree of success that would honorhim. It meant having a goal worthyof striving to attain. He had learned lo love .Mr. Davies as a I hnstianand a friend, had enjoyed his so-
ciety and was Korry to see himleave, and now hoped he would havea safe return to his family, and, ifhe was spared , to 10111111 to seethem, they should give him a warmwelcome.
Mr. Davies illustrated the awk-ward position iiY which he had felthimself the last,, ten minutes by alittle story. Hcvwas never quiteclear what a social meant. At afarewell social to Rev. Mr. Ostiumat Kohala he had been asked to givea talk on India, which was one wayit appeared of making a social, lierelated an incident told him byGeneral Secretary Walker of theSydney Y. AI. C. A., of a Londonbanker's son who had brought himletters of introduction, but whoturned out to be a thief and had tobe sent home. Roys always hadfriends in the general secretaries ofY. M. C. A.'s. This man neededtheir sympathy and he felt likepelting Mr. Fuller with words ofkindness such as he had rained onhimself. The speaker told of an-
other bo' introduced by letter totho Sydney secretary who turnedout to be a scamp. All honor toGeorge Williams of London whostarted the organization. Nevercriticize a man who is doing workthat you arc neglecting. When hesaw this tall, dqlicfttc man speakinghere, time after time with consum-ing earnestness, he felt that he(Air. Fuller) was' wearing out hislife in this work. .Air. Davies spokeof the great pleasure he had enjoyedduring the two' months of his visit, and said lie wished togo back to Eng-land with thoughts of the kindnesshere experienced. IIo was glad.kisson was with him, because he fearedlie should be too modest himself totell his wife all their kindness.
Air. Lowrcy invited all to remainfor refreshments, and icecream, cake, and conversation concludedthe entertainment.
