(LTA, CBA, Normalisation ISO-CEN)
du Grand Lyon (2014-2015), Modulowatt (2009-2013), Move About

ITS / GNSS a chance to change
transportation planning paradigm
16/03/2015 3
From the section based Origin – Destination to the complete travelling
behavior knowledge
From the stand-alone decisions (one mobile, one vehicle, one traveler,
one trip) to multi-modal, interconnected, multi-users (carsharing, road
sharing, traffic real time evaluation and prediction, traffic
management )
From vehicle safety to road safety through full interconnection
between all components of sharing a transportation mode

Video cameraDetects traffic lights, road signs, pedestrians and other mobile objects.
Radar sensorsControl the position of other vehicles.
GNSSDetermines the location of the vehicle and keeps track of its movements. Enhance security by providing a real positioning
LIDAR (light detection and ranging)Provides 3D images of the surroundings, 360°.
Ultrasonic, laser or wheel-speed sensors may also complete the equipment to refine the localization of the vehicle and the apprehension of its environment.

Autonomous cars in progress
The Google Car: showcasing the ultimate possibilities of the autonomous car.
Audi & BMW: experiencing the first generation of automated car features, ready to go on the market.

Progress and great future even if barriers remain (1/2)

 Two main applications
Closed cities or area to any other type of vehicles
 Integration into the existing traffic
 Technology issues are solvable
 Hardware advances is straight forward
Request for vast computing power and huge data storage
Reliability – espacially software is the biggest hurdle
Cyber-security will be another big hurdle
4G Telecom cover and availability of the bandwidth
Cost is an issue even if Google officially denies it
ITS : Mieux connaître le GNSS pour changer de paradigme
16/03/2015 8
 Cost
On-board technology (a LDAR is still around USD80,000)
 Road Side Infrastructure
 Ethic and legislation
Today, all legislations in the word state that a car must have a
driver
Responsibility of the carmaker in case of accident
 Maps’ reliability and frequent updates
 Consumer perception
Necessity to promote ADAS autonomy to grow acceptance
Ok for assistance but maybe not for a full robotic takes over
Concerns about data privacy & cyber securitySource : GSA – GNSS Market report 2013 – Issue 3

Our view is that the GNSS and more especially
Galileo has a key role to play

A centimeter precision is requested no matter where the vehicle is
Keep track of the car’s movements, allowing the central unit to know
where the vehicle stands anytime
The latest development is the tolling by GNSS demonstrated that space
industry has means to prevent hacking, spoofing, jamming
Cross-check the information collected by other sensors
 Liability in case of accident
 Standards ?
