Moving to ePub first, paper optional

Books are published primarily in ePub formatPaper publication done in case of successful subscription

No DRM, one purchase for all formats: basic ePub, enriched ePub (iPad, javascript…), kindle, PDF…

Low price (typically 30% of paper price)

Use fully the ePub possibilitiesNot “homothetic books”. Interactivity, non-linear reading…

Rework extensively early paper-only publications

References and anchorsReferencing other work is a necessity for scholarly publications.

Need to refer to other work and accept references.

Traditionnaly a page number in a given edition, or figure number and page.

Not robust with respect to reprint in other fomats

How to reference part of the big zoomable image of the Hypostyle hall?

epub : we would need something that’s user-readable AND reader-processable (click and link)

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

Robust anchoring

Independent of format : paper, PDF, ePub 3, ePub 4…

Surviving reflow, new edition, typo fixes…Recovery

Graceful failure

Fuzzy references

Solutions exist for annotations, but what about human-readable references?

Need to reference a target in a ePub from a printed book, or a PhD thesis written in Word or LaTeX. 64-character hash not acceptable.

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

Page lists ?

For an epub with an associated paper publication, one can use page lists.

Part of ePub 3 specs.

Implemented by most readers.

<nav epub:type="page-list" hidden=""> <ol> <li><a href="01_titre.xhtml">1</a></li> <li><a href="02_fibres.xhtml">2</a></li> <li><a href="nav.xhtml">3</a></li> <li><a href="03_titre_preface.xhtml">6</a></li> <li><a href="04_preface.xhtml#page7">7</a></li> <li><a href="04_preface.xhtml#page8">8</a></li> <li><a href="04_preface.xhtml#page9">9</a></li>

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

What about a pure ePub?

Invent fake “paper” pages ?

What happens if a paper edition is created later?

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

Paragraph numbering?

Some editors number the paragraphs inside chapters.

— robust.can use “23a” if a new paragraph is inserted between 23 and 24.

not good for works in progress, highly evolutive documents.

— easy to quote.

— fixed, but appropriate, size of target for a scholarly citation.

— figures are referenced through their number.

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

On demand referencing ?

Creating a shortcut when a citation is required?

Needs a central repository?

Shortcut can be a meaningful word.

Any fuzzy algorithm can be associated with the shortcut.

Éric Aubourg — W3C — April 2, 2014

Requirements (ideally)

For scholarly citations, we need all the requirements of an annotation anchor, especially the long-term robustness.

We also need the target reference to be human-processable.

Any better idea than paragraph numbering?
