PETITE BIOGRAPHIE

L'artiste peintre et illustrateur américain Norman Rockwell naît à New York le 3 février 1894. Il décède à Stockbridge le 8 novembre 1978. Norman Rockwell est célèbre pour ses couvertures de magazines qu’il réalise notamment pour le Saturday Evening Post. Il est aussi l’auteur d’affiches célèbres. Son style se caractérise à la fois par son réalisme et par son humour.

Norman Rockwell entre en 1908 à la Chase School of Fine and Applied Arts. En 1910, il abandonne ses études et entre à l'Art Students League of New York, où il perfectionne sa technique auprès de George Bridgeman et Thomas Fogarty. À seize ans, Norman Rockwell illustre son premier livre intitulé "Tell my why". En 1916, Norman Rockwell propose sa première couverture pour le magazine The Saturday Evening Post. Il devient dès lors le peintre de l'Américain moyen et réalise les plus célèbres illustrations et couvertures de la revue jusqu'en 1960. En 1935, il illustre les romans de Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer et Huckleberry Finn. Dans les années 50, Norman Rockwell réalise les portraits d'Eisenhower, de Kennedy et de Nasser. Il peint son Triple Autoportrait : par une mise en abyme, le peintre se peint en train de se peindre en se regardant dans un miroir. L'essor de la photographie et le déclin de l'illustration dans les années 60, amène Norman Rockwell à quitter le Saturday Evening Post. À la fin des années 60, il travaille pour la revue Look et illustre des thèmes plus en relation avec les convulsions politiques du temps. Ah ce Norman Rockwell ! Quelle peinture ! On en prend plein les yeux ! Quel environnement fascinant, d'où naît une certaine réflexion artistique. En sortant d'ici, je me hâterai de conseiller cette exposition du 23 au 28 mai au CDI à tous ceux que je connais.

Freedom from Want, Norman Rockwell

This picture is a painting by Norman Rockwell. In this

painting, there is a family around a table, In the middle of

this picture, I can see a huge turkey in an oval dish. There

are children, teenagers and adults. They are talking,

smiling and they look happy. There are two people who

are standing at the top of the painting. The old man looks

like the grandfather of the family, he is wearing a black

suit, and the lady is wearing a dress with an apron, she is

holding a turkey. The dishes and the tablecloth are white

so it is an important day, it must be Thanksgiving. On the

table, there are fruit and vegetables.

I chose this picture because it symbolizes abundance and

harmony, it’s a beautiful painting, it is luminous. I really

like having lunch with all my family and I think it is very

Puppy Love

The picture is entitled puppy love. We can see

two characters, a boy and a girl ; they’re sitting on a bench and looking at the sun. There is a dog too. The girl has flowers in her hands. They must be lovers because the girl is resting the head on the boy’s shoulder.

I chose that picture because it’s romantic,

dreamy, there is a lot of passion and love between the two characters. The dog looks melancholic, the picture is sad too. It is attractive.

Deadman's Hill

This canvas by Norman Rockwell is showing a house with people who are having fun in the snow. It's name is : «Deadman's Hill ». The sky is blue grey. The children are playing with sleds. We can also see two dogs which are playing with children. This painting is very joyful. When looking at this painting, we can hear the laughter of children.

I chose this oil painting because it reminds me of my holidays with my two parents, my brother and my sister when we came here, in Haute Savoie. We played in the snow. We made snowmen, angels, we went skiing. All children have dreamt of going to the mountain, with their family in Christmas.

Triple Self Portrait (1960)

Triple Self Portrait is a painting by Norman Rockwell. On this

painting we can see three pictures of Rockwell, in the foreground there is the painter, we can see his back. On the left we can can see a mirror and on it there is the reflection of Norman. The painter is painting his portrait by helping himself with the mirror. At the top of the painting there are many self portraits, they must be to help him. In the mirror we can see Norman Rockwell with glasses and his pipe, but on the painting we can see only the pipe, not glasses. I chose this picture because I find this painting funny and also amazing thanks to the three portraits.

I chose this painting because I love originality.

«Triple Self Portrait »

In the middle of this painting, we can see a man (he must be Norman Rockwell), who is looking at himself in a mirror. He is painting his own face on a large canvas and he is smoking a pipe. On the right, there is a mirror on a chair. It looks old and precious because it is framed of gold and there is an eagle at its summit.

It may represent power. We find also an gold objec t at the top of the drawing. It must be a helmet. Some pictures are hooked at the canvas : there are several famous painter’s self portraits (Gauguin…). He may be looking at those pictures to take examp le or to find inspiration. The painter is sitting on a stool. He is dressed slimply : a jean shirt and pants. He looks very concentrated and serious. There is a wine glass in stability on a open book. it gives suspens because we think that it goong to fal l.

I chose this painting because I found it funny. Norman Rockell has removed his glasses and represented hinself differently from who he is in reality. I like his way to sign his painting : he writes his name in the right bottom of the painting that the painter is painting ! I note that he trys to hid e his signature on the drawing, he never signs normally.

He has a straw hat. The dog is looking at the children. The boy has a flower in his right hand and is giving it to the little girl. The little girl has her hands in her back. It seems that they are about to kiss. I chose this painting because it’s a painting, full of tenderness and the

Dog Thief and Pie

This painting was being in the 30-, 40’s by Norman Rockwell. There are a man and a dog. The man is chased by the dog because he has got a pie. Maybe the dog wants to eat this pie; we can see the smell graphically following the pie. The dog has created an opening in the man’s pants and stretched his suspenders to the maximum. The expression on his face illustrates the serious of the situation . A great example of Rockwell’s humor .

I chose this painting because it’s an amazing situation and it makes me laugh. Rockwell has demonstrated the great funny side of this situation with

The head is smiling too and it makes that painting verry funny , I think that’s why I’ve chosen it .

Boy meets his dog

This document is a painting by Norman Rockwell. On the right of the picture, we can see a little boy, he’s wearing a blue and white cap, a plaid shirt, a red scarf, jeans and brown shoes. On the left we can see a dog in a brown suitcase. In the suitcase we can see “dog for sale” on the paper the dog is speckled brown and white. The glance of the boy and the dog is very communicative. The boy has already adopted the dog. I chose this picture because all children have dreamt of having a small dog in their house. I chose this painting because I love little animals and this picture is really beautiful. It’s inspiring. This picture is really banal but I love it.

NORMAN ROCKWELL April fools day 1948

First, the painting shows two people. The place looks like a small shop

stuffy with a lot of things. In the cupboard, there are dolls, paintings, a sewing machine, a candlestick, a phone, stuffed animals (deer, bird). We can see Mona Lisa in bottom left hand corner, above there are old books. In the bottom right hand corner, we can see some small statues. If we look closely, wee see two curtains at the top, on both side of the painting. There are cups hanging from the ceiling, and a lamp... Looks like a rat on old man’s shoulder. I think it is a salesman and the young girl has come to buy a doll because she has one in her hand. The shop owner has also one. I think the girl wants to choose the prettiest one, one she prefers, that is why she seems to reflect. She’s wearing an orange skirt and a white shirt, with one bag, shoes and socks that match her clothes. So I think she is a schoolgirl. She is with her a dog at her feet and another young girl, maybe her dog and her little sister.

I chose this painting because there are lots of things to describe and I was interested in the number of objects that can be found. This accumulation makes us want to explore this painting. I think someone who looks at that doesn’t want to miss some details.

Norman Rockwell - The problem we all live with.

In this oil painting, we can see five people. There are four white men and a little black girl, they are walking and the girl is walking between them. We can’t see the men’s faces. The men are dressed up and their shoes are polished, and the little girl is wearing a white dress and white shoes, in her hand she carries her school things. The men are certainly policemen because they have a armbands on which we can read « Deputy U.S. Marshal ». In the background, on the wall, there are racial slurs and the stains from thrown tomatoes. Maybe, the policemen are escorting this girl to school to protect her. Probably, Norman wanted to express his opinion on the culture of the United States and the racism that there is, because of the segregation laws. I have chose this painting because I enjoyed the theme, it shows well the reality, and the suffering that racism can bring. In reality, I don’t understand racism because basically, we have all the same blood.

"Autumn Harvest"

This is a painting by Normam Rockwell. He is a painter of the 20th century. In this painting we can see a young boy with a pumpkin in his hands. He is wearing a green shirt, braces holding blue pants, and a hat on his head. H e is looking at ducks in the sky, his dog too. We can imagine that the birds want to eat the pumpkins so the boys is protecting them. He looks in a panic because of by this attack. The dog looks in a panic k too. I’ve chosen this painting because in this painting we can see what a boy does to preserve his pumpkins fr om the ducks’ attack. It’s funny because the boy and t he dog are looking at the same thing. The dog look mor e attentive because its tail is up.

Norman Rockwell "The Rookie"

This famous picture by Norman Rockwell appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on March 2, 1957. This painting was made to commemorate the advent of the baseball season. “The Rookie” is an authentic vision of the Boston Red Sox’ locker room, in Florida. Five Red Sox players are in this picture, they are wearing white baseball suit, with blue caps with a “B” on them. On their shirts, we can see the name of their team, “Red Sox”. There is another man who is wearing a seersucker suit. He has a suitcase, a bat and a mit and he’s got a special smile. In the background there is a man who is stand up, and is looking on to the right. He could be the coach of the team. We can see through the windows, a palm tree, symbol of Florida. I’ve chosen this painting by Norman Rockwell, because I like sport and the light of this paint has touched me. The expression of the players’ face and of the coach, are really interesting. One is smiling, another is thinking, another looks surprised. They could be real.

This canvas was painted by Norman Rockwell. In the foreground, there are three characters, one woman on a horse and two men (a young man and an old one). The man is looking down and the woman is looking at the sky. We can see a dog and two birds. In the background, we can see a dam in the Glen Canyon. I think it’s the Indians who are looking at the dam built in their canyon.

I chose this painting because its colors are bright and warm.

Norman Rockwell ( 1894 - 1978 ) Norman Rockwell was a very know American painter

This painting represents Tom Sawyer’s illustrations because in 1935, Norman Rockwell illustrates the novels by Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry I chose this painting beacause there are many techniques in the art of the drawing such as depth, perspective, the various lights (the shadows and the hues of colors ). The main drawing in the background represents two children, probably in a cave. Thanks to his techniques, Norman Rockwell makes us dive into the situation of these two characters. We feel the fear and the solitude by the expression of the children’s faces and by the dark scenery in the foreground. Then the light emphasizes both children and their complicity.

This canvas was painted by Norman Rockwell. There a re 3 characters, one little boy, one barman, and one policeman. This scene takes place in a bar because in the foreground there is a black board on wich is written « Special Today ». The little boy is looking at the policeman in the eyes, and the barman is looking at these 2 characters, and he has a half-smile. We guess the m an is a policeman because he is dressed with police clothes. Near the chair leg there is a red bundle, we understand what the little boy is the runaway and t he policeman stops him. I chose this painting because these 3 characters ar e funny and I like this canvas.

This young girl is maybe a teenager who wants to know who she is, and if she can be pretty. She asks herself questions.I have chosen th is painting because there is a lot of poignancy. I see myself through this girl, when I was more little an d I was tried to wear my mother's dresses that were t oo big for me, when i put red lips or make up for the first time. This young girl represents curiosity an d the desire to grow up, it is very moving.

This oil painting was made by Norman Rockwell, an American Painter. In the middle we can see a litlle girl who is looking at herself in a mirror. She is sitting on a red velvet stool. At the bottom of the mirror there is a doll and at the girl’s feet we can see a brush, a comb and make up. On her lap there is a magazine with a picture of a beautiful woman. The little girl must want to look like to the women’s magazine and has borrowed her mom’s make-up instead of playing with her doll. I’ve chosen this painting because when I was a child I was like this little girl, I wanted to look like the women’s magazine and I stole my mom’s make-up instead of playing with dolls.

This canvas was painting by Norman Rockwell in 1954 and it is entitled "Girl

at the mirror. » This painting depicts a young girl, probably a teenage girl, who is looking at a mirror. She is wearing a white dress and sitting on a red stool. The girl has a black and white photo from a magazine of a woman on her knees. That may be her mother who died or an artist she admires. This girl face’s is dull, she looks sad and lonely. A doll is laying on the side of the mirror as if the girl did not want to be a child and wanted to look like a real woman. On the ground there are makeup, a lipstick and a hairbrush. The girl's hair is attached like the woman in the photo. The background of the picture is black, but the rest is dark except the white dress of the girl. When we look at the picture we see immediately this young girl’s face.
