Wallonia is innovativeSurely, there was no need to wait for our event «Finding out about innovation in Wallonia» to realize that people in Wallonia innovate ! But they remain rather humble, even quiet.

In this catalog, you will find out about successful projects started by companies of different size and different sectors. They are Wallonia’s biggest assets.

The innovations presented here can, quite simply, be exceptional or can contribute to dramatically improving your medical care, your comfort, your mobility, your means of communication. Some of them can, more simply, make your everyday life easier. Still, they remain essential.

Within the framework of its mission, i.e. supporting innovative projects, InnovaTech has worked for more than 10 years with entrepreneurs and knows how important it is to bring these innovations to light. Whether this is by means of press conferences, news or events, we, at Innovatech, try to promote Walloon creativity and ingenuity. It is important to spread the word about this expertise and draw other entrepreneurs towards this community, essential to the future of our region, where they will meet talented partners.

The only company that can build and deliver these blocks is located more than 1000 km away from Belgium. PiggyBee’s ambition is to offer an alternative solution to the courier market.

This participative delivery service is an ecological and much more economical alternative to most of the services traditional couriers can offer. Starting from the landing page at www.piggybee.com, the user logs in as a traveller or applicant. Requests and travel opportunities are matched and the parties are introduced via e-mail. The service is free but you are expected to thank the courier with a ride from the airport or the train station, an invitation to have a drink, a guided tour, ...

6Microbiogas plantEnergXkw is a microbiogas unit that can supply up to 10kW of electricity, using agricultural inputs (green organic waste) from a medium-size farm. EnergXkw, which was created by 5 walloon companies, shows several innovative characteristics.

• simplifies the biogas process for the farmer

• is designed for medium-size farms

• works with fluid or solid agricultural inputs

• is a modular and movable unit

• allows a simple and restricted usage of the electricity that is produced

7Coloured and photoluminescent bottles Want to decorate glass objects in an original manner, for instance for the perfume, luxury spirits or special beers sectors ? Need to equip these objects (often showing complex shapes) with unique functionalities ?

The technology developed by Landgraf gives birth to two new decorating processes intended for bottles and glasses :

• making them photoluminescent : the decoration layer set on the glass charges with the daylight or UV rays, and illuminates in half-light or total darkness. Landgraf offers 6 different photoluminescent colours to this end ;

• making it possible to set a decoration layer using organic ink within an automated process on a glass with complex shapes : the organic ink reduces the amount of heavy metals in the decoration while lowering the baking temperature of the glass.

The test gives the oncologists the ability to analyse all the potentially active genes in the patient’s tumor. It helps the oncologists adjust the treatment as necessary by using targeted therapies, whether available on the market or in development, that will selectively kill the patient’s cancer cells. The analysis includes an information and tumor transportation kit, a DNA analysis, confirmation tests as well as a theranostic report (treatment selection) for the oncologists. The test is simple, quick and highy sensitive.

This is the first product from OncoDNA, a young start-up specialised in personalised oncology based on patient’s tumor DNA analysis. After only 3 months, OncoDEEP DX has already been marketed in more than 15 countries worldwide.

12Professional mileage calculatorSince January 1st 2013, companies have had to provide the tax administration with the proportion in which costs related to vehicles that are made available to their employees are for private use or business purposes, in a clear and accurate manner.

In order to make this tedious exercise easier, a small company based in Jumet has developed an innovative in-vehicle telematics device that calculates, among other things, this proportion automatically. The solution is very easy to use : a module is plugged once and for all in the vehicle’s OBD port and a remote control then enables the activation of the requested calculation.

The tool takes care of everything and even transfers the collected data to an official administrative document template. But the technical capabilities of OnRoad Pro go far beyond this. The tool also provides a detailed tracking sheet for the company’s entire fleet, while protecting the individual’s right to privacy.

22Superficial peelingCEREPHARMA is a young and innovative company specialised in the research of new susbtances active in improving skin care as well as in the formulation of novel solutions to help these substances penetrate the skin in an optimal way.

The company has developed a new range of chemical skin surface peeling processes named SAL-EXFO. Based on a vectorised lipophilic derivative of salycylic acid that creates a great affinity with the stratum corneum lipids, this peeling efficiently exfoliates at very low concentrations.

The accurate and efficient exfoliating action of the corneocytes boosts skin cells renewal. SAL-EXFO also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal and anti-acne properties. The treatment is soft, fast (15 to 20 minutes), efficient and does not require social eviction.

25An alternative to peristaltic pumpsIn medecine and in the pharmaceutical industry, peristaltic pumps are used to move biological fluids (urine, blood, ...) from one container to the other by means of a flexible pipe. The major asset of this kind of pump is that the only element of the pump that touches the product being pumped is the surface inside the tube. This allows to move fluids or gas with no risk of contamination. Peristaltic pumps are used in dialysis machines, dosing pumps and automated samplers. However these pumps can impact the viability of the biological cells and for instance damage blood or urine being pumped.

CYTOPUMP, designed by Ipratech, is the answer to this problem. It is a single-use pump that is intended to move gas or liquids without generating mechanical stress. The CYTOPUMP has therefore no impact on cell viability. This major advantage is made possible by the activation of a membrane with a permanent back-and-forth movement draining and refilling a disposable pumping chamber. Moreover, it offers plug-and-play convenience and does not require any effort for assembly. Innovative, compact and highly affordable, this new generation of pumps should make integrators very happy. 32Patients under medical observationAfter observing patients in hospitals, Dr Jean‐Philippe Hermanne, Co-Manager of 2‐Observe, developed a non-contact, emission-free monitoring solution for patients at risks (runaway patients, falls, respiratory arrests). This device, named Life Observer Mobile®, is the first device to use completely passive infrared technology (QPO technology®) for real-time monitoring of patients, day and night.

In case no movement is detected for at least 20 seconds, an alarm is triggered off locally and/or remotely. This system, designed for general hospital wards and nursing homes, was scientifically validated thanks to a successful pilot study conducted on 169 adult patients of the pulmonary unit at the Namur Regional Hospital.

The results of this pilot study were published in the Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing last April. The project was developed with the assistance of iol Strategic Design.

Thermal insulation of buildings is steadily increasing and the simultaneous increase of air tightness makes ventilation systems increasingly necessary. 48High-efficiency beer pump All event organizers know this: working with an efficient beer pump is paramount. The trick to achieve this is to keep the beer cold enough. However, very often, that’s really tough to do. The pump has not rotated long enough before the tapping device was put on the casks and the ice patch where the beer circulates melts too quickly. This results in a draught with a huge amount of froth and a lot of waste.

How can this be improved?

A brewer from Clavier and his technical partner developed this particularly innovative system: instead of using water and ice to cool the beer, the cooling system of the “Tirbicool” pump uses a fridge that cools the beer down to 4-5 degrees almost instantaneously. The product is now patented but needed several years of research & development to ensure the possibility of easy industrialisation and reduce costs.

51Transparent mirrorA smart mirror that uses sensor-touch or remote control-based technology to become transparent, now that’s a good idea! But what could we do with it?

To save energy, why not equip one’s fridge with a door including this smart mirror? Provided that 33% of energy losses come from unnecessary openings of the fridge door that can more often than not be explained by our sudden cravings for a snack, why not allow ourselves to check the contents of the fridge simply by touching it? Press your finger to the door and the glass will become transparent. This way you can check whether or not the contents of the fridge will help satisfy your craving.

This good idea is René Denooz’s. He designed a fridge whose door becomes transparent when you touch it with your fingers. The contents can then be visualised without opening the door !

This smart mirror-equipped fridge is one of the applications of the Frigiden® system. New applications are continuously designed.

52On site treatment of contaminated soilsStabilization/solidification is a new treatment technology for soils and sludges contaminated with heavy metals. This technology consists in mixing innovative reagents into contaminated soil. These reagents have a two-fold effect :

• they allow to increase the mechanical performance (load-bearing capacity) of the treated soils,

• they allow to sustainably prevent the heavy metals from leaching from the contaminated soil.

One of the main advantages of this technology is that it can be applied on site thanks to mobile mixing units such as the ones used for liming and owned by Immoroute. This way, the soils treated can be directly dumped back, thus avoiding the potential issues caused by transportation. Moreover this falls in line with the circular economy strategy encouraged by the EU.

53Holographic microscopeOVIZIO develops 3D digital holographic microscopy technologies that stem from research conducted by the Microgravity Research Center at ULB. The applications in the medical sector focus among other things on cell count and the calculation of the adipocytes’ fat rate.

The developments needed to market efficient equipment focused on one hand on the treatment of signals and holographic images, and on the other hand on instrumentation. The latter was developed with mecatronic experts from WOW Technology, who worked on the design of the machine, the technical feasibility, and prototyping.

The equipment is financed within the framework of the Biowin pole. Ovizio won the Deloitte Benelux Most Disruptive innovator 2012 Award for these developments.

54Static heat pumpSOLARIS-PAC has developed a fan-less static heat pump (PCS) designed for sanitary hot-water production. Static capturing made full sense to its designer as it is particularly well-suited to low power applications. It also allows for simplifying the heat pump technology as the fan is no longer required whereas this element is mandatory on classic air-source heat pumps. No fan means no noise pollution, neither outside nor inside.

Moreover, simplicity rhymes with reliability. For most types of equipment, the very first cause of breakdown are related to parts with a motion. Remove them and you will increase the life expectancy of your equipment - a priority when you invest to achieve energy independence.

Tests carried out in the extreme conditions prescribed by the Walloon Region gave good, above-expectations results. This success means that SOLARIS-PAC now owns the only static heat pump desjgned for hot-water production that can potentially be granted subsidies by both the Walloon and Brussels regions. In addition to this, the heat pump has been designed in such a way that it will contribute to the aesthetics of your home.

Do you worry about floods and the damage they can cause to your home ? Labelled “Young Innovating Enterprise”, Hydroprotect, LLC has just created a protection barrier especially designed for households. Thinner, more discreet, easier to install in case of imminent disaster but as resilient as traditional barriers, it can retain up to 50 cm of water and can be installed very easily on front and garage doors.

This kit was developed between February and September 2013, with the assistance of the iol Strategic Design design office and CERISIC (HELHa) for stress tests. All components are manufactured in Wallonia.

56Sea-buckthorn schnappsThe Argousier (sea buckthorn) is the result of collaboration between a bartender and a distillery. It is also the use of an atypical and rare berry and most of all it is an original and very bold drink!

Small but strong berries. These sea-buckthorn berries, with their vibrant orange colour, grow on small trees in the middle of the sand dunes. They are harvested in late August and in September, when they are ripe.

They are quite rare and little known by most people yet they have numerous health benefits (they are asource of vitamins and antioxydants). These astringent berries also have a typical and complex flavour.

Jeroen’s and the master distillers need 2 kg of berries to make one bottle of schnapps. It subtly combines the tartness of the berry juice of the sea buckthorn with the sweet smoothness of the liquor. This drink tastes like a true discovery.

59Natural preservativeConsumers are increasingly concerned, and justly so, with the freshness, flavour and safety of the food they buy. To meet this demand, food producers, and especially those from the meat sector, are looking for simple, reliable and natural solutions to avoid food spoliage. On one hand, the goal is to avoid contamination with pathogenic bacteria like Listeria monocytogenes, E-coli, Salmonella and other bacteria that are toxic to humans. On the other hand, producers must make sure that their food products maintain an attractive colour as well as excellent flavour their whole shelf life.

To meet this demand, Galactic and Oxylent combined their efforts within the framework of a project initiated by the Wagralim pole. The result of their research is a natural product named ProMeat Essential A, which combines a preservative issued from the natural fermentation of sugar and an aromatic plant extract. Therefore, this product significantly reduces the amount of commonly used artificial additives and other chemical antioxidants.

There are quite many advantages including a “two-in-one” natural solution, food preservation and freshness, and the fact that it can be used in very small amounts, is healthy and green-labelled.

60On line video game Just imagine a chess game where players create and destroy the board as they play. Add to this some collectible cards such as the ones found in the well-known Magic: the Gathering game. Shake everything and you’ll get Faëria, a new strategic video game developed by Abrakam, a company based in Liège. The game is digitally available on PCs and coming soon on tablets.

Four years in the making, this little gem combines creativity and technology. Using the methods taught in the book The Lean Startup, project Faëria has, from the very beginning, involved a whole community of people who helped with the testing and validating of the concepts. As a result, the final product meets most players’ expectations.

Faëria has so far been tested by over 10,000 players, especially at events like Gamescom in Cologne and PAX Prime in Seattle ! The small team of designers is now involved in a Kickstarter campaign that will end on November 10th, 2013. Kickstarter is the biggest crowd-funding platform in the world and this is the very first time a major Walloon project has been involved!
